Doctoral colloquium - Pavol Kollár (24.11.2025)

Monday 24.11.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Pavol Kollár:
Combinatorial problems -- a place where classical enumeration fails
Abstract:
Combinatorial problems are, by their very nature, interesting and daunting at the same time. These types problems are approachable and can be explained with very little technical background and yet one can ask deep questions that require powerful machinery to approach answers and solutions to such questions.
In this talk we consider two such problems. One considers symmetries of graphs and generalises these concepts to the realm of permutation group theory and so-called "r-regular families of permutations". This project is continued work from previous years and we will report on our progress. The second problem generalises the classical antidictionary problem, where one wishes to distinguish between words that do not contain certain subwords and the ones that do, into two dimensions. This technique developed to tackling the classical antidictionary problem is useful in searching algorithms, especially the ``string searching'' algorithms. We will also see a famous class of graphs, so-called de Bruijn graphs, and how they are related to this two dimensional problem.

JFMED CU Enhances Traditional Anatomy Teaching with a Virtual Dissection Table

The Department of Anatomy at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin...

At the Department of Anatomy, students gain their first in-depth understanding of the human body, its structure, and its interconnected systems. While traditional methods such as anatomical models, preserved specimens, and cadaver dissections remain essential, modern technologies offer new and innovative learning opportunities.
“Our approach to teaching anatomy combines time-tested methods with modern tools,” said Assoc. Prof. Desanka Výbohová, MD, PhD, Head of the Department. “Cadaveric dissection still plays an irreplaceable role, offering students real experience with the human body and the chance to develop their manual skills. The virtual dissection table, however, provides new possibilities for interactive, 3D exploration of human anatomy.”
Using digitized cadavers created from real CT and MRI scans, students can examine the entire body—including bones, muscles, internal organs, vascular and nervous systems. The table is used during both practical and dissection classes, where students study anatomy systemically and topographically. They can make virtual cross-sections in various anatomical planes, peel away tissue layers, and compare normal and pathological findings.
“The table offers dynamic, visual presentations of anatomical structures and can be tailored to various levels of learning—from undergraduate students in medical and healthcare programs to postgraduate training for young physicians,” added Assoc. Prof. Výbohová. “Thanks to the wide range of built-in pathological examples and case studies, it supports the development of clinical thinking and encourages active student engagement.”
By combining traditional and digital approaches, JFMED CU provides students with a more engaging, modern, and comprehensive anatomy education.

Nuclear Seminar - Karol Sučák (19.11.2025)

Wednesday 19.11.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Mgr. Karol Sučák:
Analysis of elemental composition of atmospheric aerosols using the PIXE method with an external ion beam

Abstract:
The study of the elemental composition of atmospheric aerosols contributes to the understanding of the development of environmental pollution. The CENTA facility, equipped with a 3 MV tandem accelerator, is continually advancing techniques for elemental sample analysis. The PIXE method utilises an external beam, which is currently implemented through modifications of the accelerator system that enable the beam to exit the vacuum chamber. This method allows the analysis of a broad spectrum of samples, which are not constrained by size or composition. The technique was used to determine the concentration of several elements in aerosol samples taken at a meteorological station near the FMFI. Analysis of samples from different periods indicates a long-term trend in the evolution of concentrations of some elements, and at the same time reveals atypical events.

Nuclear Seminar - Dominik Juračka (12.11.2025)

Wednesday 12.11.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

RNDr. Dominik Juračka (Department of Nuclear Chemistry, Fakulty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University):
Validation and verification of carbon-14 determination method in samples from nuclear facilities

Abstract:
Carbon-14 is an activation product with a long half-life and is one of the radiochemicaly complicated and difficult to measure radionuclides due to the low energy of beta radiation (156.469 keV) and its presence in various chemical forms. When monitoring gaseous discharges from nuclear installations, C-14 activity in samples obtained by capturing gaseous chemical forms of carbon into NaOH solution is evaluated and balanced. The aim of the work was to optimize and validate a method for determining C-14 activity in liquid matrices of gaseous discharges using liquid scintillation spectrometry. The method was successfully verified in the interlaboratory comparative test "Environmental Radioactivity Proficiency Test Exercise 2021" at the Radiochemical Analysis Test Laboratory of KJCH Prif UK, which holds accreditation according to STN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The application to real samples from the gaseous outlets of the nuclear power plant confirmed that the method meets all the requirements of the standard.

Doctoral colloquium - Filip Kerák (10.11.2025)

Monday 10.11.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Filip Kerák:
Shrinking the giants - Sparse Neural Networks a necessity of the future
Abstract:
How to live long enough to understand the ultimate question of life universe and everything... Modern neural networks often comprise billions of parameters, resulting in substantial time and computational demands during both training and inference. While these large-scale models have achieved remarkable success across a wide range of tasks, their size and resource requirements pose significant challenges for broader adoption and sustainability.
A promising solution lies in reducing the size of these models. Strategies like lowering precision or quantization can only by applied to a certain point, therefore minimizing the number of parameters without sacrificing accuracy is a growing next step. One effective approach is to introduce sparsity during training. By selectively retaining only the most essential connections, sparse training techniques can produce models that are significantly smaller and faster, yet still highly capable.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Thomas Weber (18.11.2025)

Tuesday 18.11.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Thomas Weber (Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics):
Hopf algebras and quantum principal bundles
Abstract:
I will give a gentle introduction to the theory of Hopf--Galois extensions and explain their geometric interpretation as noncommutative principal bundles. If time permits, I will review a differential calculus approach for quantum principal bundles, which gives rise to horizontal and vertical forms, together with a noncommutative Atiyah sequence. Examples, such as the quantum Hopf fibration, will be discussed.
This is partially based on a collaboration with Antonio Del Donno and Emanuele Latini
