Preventing neurodegeneration through science, nutrition and movement

As populations continue to age, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are...

Alongside ageing itself, the rising incidence of these conditions is linked to chronic diseases, environmental toxins and modern lifestyle factors such as sedentary behaviour, long-term stress and poor dietary habits. Although older adults remain the most affected group, neurodegenerative disorders are increasingly impacting younger generations as well.
Brainhealth builds on the earlier Nutriaging project. “Our project focuses on preventing neurodegenerative diseases through a combination of proper nutrition, regular exercise and early diagnosis. We aim to improve the quality of life of older adults while reducing the risks associated with ageing,” explains Jana Muchová, Head of the Department of Medical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry at FMED CU and the Slovak lead investigator for the project.
The research team plans to carry out a human intervention study alongside experiments using animal models and central nervous system cells. The project also includes the creation of a specialised laboratory dedicated to identifying early biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases. Another objective is to map the occurrence of neurodegenerative and mental health disorders in the Slovak-Austrian border region and develop recommendations for preventive strategies.
The project is led by Karl-Heinz Wagner from the University of Vienna. The FMED CU team is headed by Jana Muchová, who is working on the project together with Deputy Head Ingrid Žitňanová and project manager Zdeňka Ďuračková.

Condensed Matter Seminar - Viktor Šroba (21.5.2026)

doc. RNDr. Pavol Valko, CSc. (Linköping University, Sweden):
Goldene - Single-atom Layer Gold: Prospects for Novel Noble Metallenes
Abstract:
Synthesis of monolayer gold has been limited to a few atomic layers stabilized on or inside another material. The bonding nature of metals is the root cause to gold’s tendency to take 3D shapes during all kinds of synthesis, like vapor-phase deposition or precipitation from solutions.
However, in 2024, it was demonstrated that free-standing atomically thin 2D sheets of gold, named goldene, can be exfoliated by wet-chemically etching away Ti3C2 layers from Ti3AuC2 nano-laminated MAX-phase. [1] Ti3AuC2 is realized by substituting the Si layer in Ti3SiC2 thin films with Au during high temperature annealing, intercalation, due to eutectic nature of the Au-Si phase diagram. [2] Goldene sheets are then obtained by etching utilizing diluted form of the Murakami’s reagent with surfactant schemes are applied to prevent goldene sheets from coalescing with each other in water suspension.
So far only few analytical techniques were used to investigate the properties of goldene. Free-standing goldene sheets observed scanning transmission electron microscopy showed a tendency for curling and agglomeration of goldene, However, ab initio molecular dynamics simulation shows that flat atomic goldene layers are inherently stable. Other than that X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals an Au 4f binding energy increase of 0.88 eV. [1]
Proposed applications for goldene include sensors and photocatalyst for water splitting during solar energy harvesting. The use of Au resources would be minimized due to the ultimate surface-area-to-volume ratio for goldene.
Isolated three-atomic-layer Au sheets – trilayer goldene – was recently reported by us by selectively removing the Ti4C3 sheets from Ti4Au3C3, formed by Au-intercalated Ti4SiC3 thin films. [3] Moreover, efforts to isolate other noble metals as for example Ir, Pd, Pt, Rh etc. are well on the way.

Senior learners from Spain explored Bratislava during an Erasmus+ mobility at CU

The Centre of Continuing Education of Comenius University Bratislava (CCE CU) welcomed forty-six...

The participants arrived in groups of around fourteen people from each university: Universidad de Alicante, Universidad Jaume I and Universidad de Málaga. The official welcome ceremony for the international guests took place on Monday, 4 May, in the meeting room of the CU Scientific Board. The Spanish delegation was received by CU Vice-Rector for External Relations Radomír Masaryk, accompanied by university spokesperson Eva Kopecká.
Education and inclusion at the heart of the programme
The mobility programme focused on inclusion, sustainability and digital skills. Following Monday’s welcome session, the senior participants attended a workshop on mobile photography led by Katarína Révayová, followed by a guided tour of Bratislava’s historic city centre in Spanish.
Tuesday focused on inclusion, with participants discussing ways of overcoming invisible barriers in education together with Elena Mendelová from the CU Support Centre for Students with Specific Needs. They also learned more about the University of the Third Age at CU and adult education programmes offered through the CCE. Wednesday connected ecology with technology. Participants first shared their experiences via a digital presentation titled Bratislava Through Our Eyes, in which they expressed their enthusiasm for both the university environment and the city itself. They then attended a lecture by Associate Professor Peter Hanajík on sustainability at CU and visited a travelling exhibition presenting student and faculty initiatives contributing to the university’s sustainable development goals. The programme continued with a visit to the Waterworks Museum. The final part of the week included a visit to the House of the European Union and a discussion on lifelong learning. The programme also featured thematic walks to Bratislava Castle and Devín Castle focusing on European values and participation at every age, and concluded with an environmentally themed walk along the banks of the Danube near Devín Castle.
Personal stories and motivation for lifelong learning
For many of the learners, the University of the Third Age represents a way of staying actively connected with society. Silvestre from Castellón highlighted the importance of social interaction and continuous learning as tools for coping with the transition from working life to retirement. Isabel from Málaga fulfilled a long-held dream of visiting Central Europe during her trip to Bratislava and is currently studying the psychology of emotions back home. Participants Antonia and Victoria from Alicante particularly appreciated the excellent organisation and the atmosphere of the city, which they said exceeded all expectations.
Organising such a large-scale event required careful preparation. Nadežda Hrapková, project manager at CCE CU and coordinator of the mobility project, sees similar activities as essential for building a modern Europe. “International mobility in later life demonstrates that education has no age limits. Our guests from Spain brought to Bratislava not only their southern temperament, but also a tremendous enthusiasm for learning and sharing experiences. For our Centre of Continuing Education, it is essential to create a space where European identity is built through genuine encounters and dialogue between generations,” said Hrapková.
The Spanish delegation left Bratislava impressed by the hospitality of CCE CU and the carefully prepared programme, which made everyone feel at home. The event confirmed that Erasmus+ programmes are a genuine tool for bringing people together regardless of gender or age.
The successful international cooperation will continue beyond this visit. One of the CCE’s upcoming plans is to organise a similar mobility programme for senior learners in cooperation with a partner institution in Poland. Between 8 and 12 June, 2026, eight Slovak participants will travel to Wrocław as part of an Erasmus+ mobility programme. From June 2026 onwards, the centre is also expecting approval of a new KA121 mobility programme under its Erasmus+ Accreditation, running until the end of 2027.

Forensic Experts in Action: DVI Exercise Focused on Disaster Victim Identification

From April 20 to 24, 2026, the international DVI (Disaster Victim Identification) exercise PLANE...

The event was professionally supervised by the Criminalistics and Forensic Expertise Institute of the Police Force. The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin, was represented by MUDr. Veronika Rybárová, PhD., from the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Medical Expertises.
The exercise simulated a major emergency scenario — an aircraft crash within an urban environment involving multiple casualties — and included both theoretical and practical training focused on the organization, documentation, and identification of victims according to international DVI standards. In addition to participating in the professional activities, Dr. Rybárová also volunteered as a simulated victim during practical search operations conducted by mountain rescue canine teams.
Approximately 70 experts attended the event, including teams from Germany, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Team compositions changed throughout the exercise, and participants faced highly demanding tasks under simulated air disaster conditions — from searching aircraft wreckage and debris in the field, locating and transporting bodies, and conducting initial examinations and on-site identification procedures, to detailed victim identification under mortuary conditions.
The exercise also included the collection of information about missing persons from fictional relatives, followed by the reconciliation process, during which ante-mortem and post-mortem data were compared. The results were subsequently presented before a special tribunal, which determined whether the identity of victims was confirmed, probable, excluded, or could not be established due to insufficient evidence.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Ján Karabáš (14.5.2026)

Thursday 14.5.2026 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Ján Karabáš (FEI STU Bratislava):
Colouring defect of strong snarks
Abstract:
A strong snark is a 2-connected cubic graph which is not 3-edge-colourable and remains so after deleting any edge and by suppressing the resulting 2-valent vertices. Strong snarks were introduced by Jaeger in 1985 as a class of cubic graphs that might include counterexamples to the cycle double conjecture, the 5-flow conjecture, or to other related longstanding conjectures. With these conjectures still widely open, strong snarks merit further investigation. In this paper we study colouring defect of strong snarks, an invariant introduced by Steffen in 2015 as the minimum number of edges of a cubic graph left uncovered by any set of three perfect matchings. This invariant provides one of measures of edge uncolourability of cubic graphs recently studied by several authors. Our main result shows that the colouring defect of a strong snark is at least 6, and the bound is best possible.
