Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Candan Çelik (7.10.2021)

Thursday 7.10.2021 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Candan Çelik:
Protein noise and distribution in a two-stage gene-expression model extended by an mRNA inactivation loop

Abstract:
Chemical reaction networks involving molecular species at low copy numbers lead to stochasticity in protein levels in gene expression at the single-cell level. Mathematical modelling of this stochastic phenomenon enables us to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms quantitatively. Here we present a two-stage stochastic gene expression model that extends the standard model by an mRNA inactivation loop. The extended model exhibits smaller protein noise than the original two-stage model. Interestingly, the fractional reduction of noise is a non-monotonous function of protein stability, and can be substantial especially if the inactivated mRNA is stable. We complement the noise study by an extensive mathematical analysis of the joint steady-state distribution of active and inactive mRNA and protein species. We determine its generating function and derive a recursive formula for the protein distribution. The results of the analytical formula are cross-validated by kinetic Monte-Carlo simulation. This is joint work with Pavol Bokes and Abhyudai Singh.

Grant scheme for student associations

Bratislava, 30 September, 2021: This year, Comenius University will distribute €25,000 to student...

"Student associations and activities play an integral role at the university. They serve as incubators of great ideas, help students build a network of professional contacts, and produce experiences which can later be transformed by active students into professional growth," said Rector Števček. "There are several associations at our university that do a great job and help enrich young people's academic life beyond and above the university curriculum. However, many exceptional ideas are hampered by a lack of funding. I am therefore pleased to keep my promise and announce a university-wide grant scheme dedicated specifically to student associations and initiatives."
The objective of the grant scheme is to support sports and cultural activities, publication of student magazines and information portals, organization of student conferences, seminars, discussion clubs and workshops, and provide funding to projects like community gardens and recreation areas. The university is open to any other good ideas which can contribute towards the university's mission.
The grant scheme is intended to be as accessible as possible - just send a simple application to the Rector's Office by 31 October 2021. Both formal associations which are legal entities, as well as unincorporated initiatives are eligible for support. For more information, please contact the Rector's Office (kr@uniba.sk). The projects will be evaluated by a commission which also includes students from the Academic Senate of Comenius University. The university will publish the selected projects in November 2021.
Applications can be submitted as of today.

Organization of the winter semester of the academic year 2021/2022 at Comenius University in Bratislava, Faculty of Management

In accordance with the guidelines of the Comenius University in Bratislava, the Faculty of...

Only selected seminars / exercises will take place in person
Seminars / exercises from some compulsory, compulsory elective and elective subjects will take place in the simultaneous presence of the teacher and students in the classrooms and lecture halls of the faculty, in compliance with hygienic measures (number of students, capacity of classrooms and lecture halls, disinfection).

Non-participation in teaching for serious reasons (quarantine, etc.) during in class teaching at the faculty will be addressed by the possibility of participating in online teaching
Students who will not be able to attend in class teaching on the faculty premises will have an online broadcast available (from at least one group from each subject). However, due to the remote mode, the teacher may require a substitute performance as a substitute for control activities and activities performed and transmitted directly in class. Students will be informed about the fulfillment of these duties.
Online teaching will be provided by students studying the study program management in English, who cannot attend the faculty due to various obstacles, students of external form of study, as well as students from PraF UK, FMFI UK and FTVŠ UK who study at study programs in which FM UK also participates, due to the ban on mixing groups.

It is not possible to change between study groups
For preventive reasons, it is not possible to change between groups. In previous academic years, this was possible with the "student per student" system - this will not be possible for any student this semester.

Lectures will be created in electronic form (video, audio)
Lectures will generally not be held in person, but in electronic form students will receive a lecture that will include video and / or audio on the topic according to the syllabus.
The student studies the lecture at a time when it suits him/her (of course before the seminar / exercise) and as many times as he/she needs. Make the most of these positive forms of online form.
Each compulsory subject will have an online consultation
In addition to seminars / exercises, online consultations will be planned for the given subjects. At this time, the teacher of the subject will be available online (for example, through the MS Teams application) to answer questions and inconsistencies that students have after studying the online lecture and will be able to answer questions to students who did not attend in class teaching on the faculty premises.
These consultations will be used only for the purpose of consulting questions on the subject, not for consulting, for example, final theses - consultations for final theses will be arranged separately in agreement with the supervisor of final theses.

Greater emphasis will be placed on continuous work during the semester
The teacher will adjust the ratio of the continuous assessment that students can obtain during the teaching weeks of the semester (from September 20, 2021 to December 17, 2021) and the assessment for the exam in the examination period.
For this reason, it is necessary to work continuously during the semester.

Lunch breaks
Due to the need to ensure the necessary hygienic measures, the beginning of teaching is scheduled for 7.20 am. Lunch breaks are extended to 50 minutes and are scheduled at three different times to reduce the number of students in the canteen. Lunch breaks will be at the following times:
from 11,30 til 12,20,
from 12,20 til 13,10,
from 13,10 til 14,00.

Beginnings of lessons in the winter semester of the academic year 2021/2022
7:20, 8:10, 9:0, 9:50, 10:40, 11:30, 12:20, 13:10, 14:00, 14:50, 15:40, 16:30, 17:20, 18.10, 19.00, 19.50

Seminar of Graph Theory - Róbert Jajcay (30.9.2021)

Thursday 30.9.2021 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Róbert Jajcay:
Biregular Cages
Abstract:
The Cage Problem - the problem of finding a smallest k-regular graph of girth g, i.e., the (k,g)-cage - is well known to be very hard and the exact orders of cages are known for very few parameter pairs (k,g). One possible approach to understanding structural properties of cages includes considering biregular graphs that contain vertices of two degrees, m and n, and generalizing the Cage Problem by looking for smallest graphs of girth g containing vertices of the two degrees m and n, the (m,n;g)-cages. In the case of odd girths, results of this approach differ quite a bit from the regular Cage Problem as the orders of biregular (m,n;g)-cages are determined for all odd girths g and degree pairs m,n in which m is considerably smaller than n. The even girth case is still wide open, and has been therefore restricted to bipartite biregular graphs in which the two bipartite sets consist exclusively of vertices of one of the degrees (regular cages of even girth are also conjectured to be bipartite). We survey the most resent results on biregular and bipartite biregular cages, present some improved lower bounds, and discuss an interesting connection between bipartite biregular cages and t-designs.
