Centre of Active Aging created at Comenius University

Bratislava, 14 October 2021: The new Centre of Active Ageing at Comenius University Bratislava...

is a part of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports of Comenius University. It is staffed by experts from the faculty and includes a practice of a sports physician. Seniors receive individual treatment and the goal of the centre is to improve their physical fitness and general health. The facilities include a mobility training room, a specialised weight-lifting gym and a swimming pool. The centre is fully accessible for people with reduced mobility.
"Most modern-day fitness centres are full of young, sporty people. Rather than attracting senior citizens, they have a discouraging effect on them. It is our ambition to ensure that our centre offers a friendly environment in which experienced instructors provide guidance in the form of exercise programmes adapted to the needs of older adults, including people with disabilities," says the project’s sponsor, Professor Dušan Hamar. "Our ambition is to use the centre to educate about a healthy lifestyle and to promote appropriate forms of physical activity which can improve the general health and increase the quality of life of our elderly citizens," he adds.
According to the centre’s experts, regular physical activity acts as prevention. It has a positive effect on one's health, mobility and independence, while also boosting one's self-respect and cognitive functions. Activity also mitigates chronic musculoskeletal pain, minimizes the risk of cardiovascular diseases and reduces both direct and indirect health care expenditures.
In addition to physical activities, the centre offers educational programmes focusing on the management of physical activity at home, the nutrition of seniors, on social services and geriatric care.
"Both the WHO and the Slovak National Programme for the Promotion of Health emphasize the importance of physical activity of seniors. I am pleased that the first centre of this kind in the region was established at Comenius University. I am also glad that our senior citizens now have the opportunity to follow coordinated programmes under the supervision of our qualified experts," said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.
The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under INTERREG V-A, the cross-border cooperation programme between Slovak Republic and Austria.

The world-famous physicist receives the Grand Gold Medal

Bratislava, 13 October 2021: Today, Comenius University Bratislava hosted Kip S. Thorne, the...

Professor Kip Thorne is an American physicist who studies relativistic stars, black holes and gravitational waves. In 2017, he was one of the three scientists who received the Nobel Prize for the first direct detection and observation of gravitational waves. He has also made a name for himself in the history of cinema as executive producer and scientific advisor to Christopher Nolan's Hollywood film Interstellar.
In his lecture entitled “My profound relationship with the warped universe: from black holes and wormholes to time travel and gravitational waves”, he summed up his research of gravitational waves, black holes, the warping of the universe, and the Big Bang. He also highlighted the work of several colleagues with whom he collaborated during his scientific career, such as his mentor and close ally
, as well as
,
and Barry Barish who were his team-mates on the
project.
Professor Thorne works on the theory of “wormholes”, which could theoretically enable time travel in a warped universe. This theory may be a mere speculation at the moment but future could bring changes. "When I was a student, 59 years ago, we speculated a lot about the black holes and gravitational waves. Today we have observed the black holes, we have observed gravitational waves and we expect to see gravitational waves from the Big Bang soon. We doubt that wormholes exist and we doubt that backward time travel is possible. But in the future the gravitational waves will reveal in greater detail the warped side of the universe and then we might understand what we only speculated about fifty-nine years ago," said Professor Thorne.
The Rector of Comenius University then awarded the University’s highest accolade to him. "It is an honour for me to acknowledge Professor Thorne's excellent research, but also his teaching, the popularization of science, which led him to swap his profession of a physicist for that of an actor temporarily, his contributions towards the popularisation of science in Slovakia in general and at our university in particular, as well as his leadership in the LIGO experiment, by awarding to him the Grand Gold Medal of Comenius University,“ said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček when presenting the Medal.
The event was organised jointly by Comenius University Bratislava and ESET Foundation.

UNIVERSITY, BRATISLAVA AND KARLOVA VES ARE FINE-TUNING THE PLANS FOR A BIKE PATH AND A PEDESTRIAN PROMENADE ALONG THE KARLOVESKÉ RAMENO RIVER ARM

Bratislava, 12 October 2021: Last week, a three-way meeting took place at Comenius University in...

"This section of the path would connect our student dormitories in Mlynská dolina with several of our faculties as well as the building of the Rectorate. Students accommodated in Mlynská dolina and many citizens and tourists would be able to travel efficiently and safely along the route of the legendary 39 bus line," said the Rector Marek Števček.
"The construction of bike paths is a priority for the municipality - it is a big topic for us right now. The missing section near the Karloveské rameno river arm plays an important role in terms of transit safety as well as environmentally sustainable transport in this area. Bratislava has the potential to intensify bike traffic massively. That is why I’m pleased with the progress of the negotiations with Comenius University concerning a land exchange and I hope that by the end of the year the outcome will be put to a vote in the city council by us and in the academic senate by the Rector," said the Mayor of Bratislava Matúš Vallo.
"The missing section of the promenade along the shore of the Karloveská zátoka bay is more important than it appears. It is our policy to enable safe walking and bike traffic in Bratislava and this connection is extremely useful for the inhabitants of Karlova Ves, but it’s also a vital corridor linking the outlying boroughs of Devín, Dúbravka and Devínska Nová Ves with the downtown," added the Mayor of Karlova Ves Dana Čahojová.
Some changes to the land titles of the parcels underlying the promenade are required before its construction can begin. In addition, thorough preparation and regular maintenance will be needed to ensure its safe operation. Comenius University and the city of Bratislava have worked out a land exchange deal and only a couple of details remain to be resolved. The Municipality of the Capital will then submit the proposal to the City Council and the university leadership will request approval from the Academic Senate.

Seminar of Computer Learning - Peter Richtárik (22.10.2021)

Peter Richtárik (KAUST, Computer and Mathematical Science and Engineering Division):
EF21: A New, Simpler, Theoretically Better, and Practically Faster Error Feedback
Lecture room C, FMFI UK (mode - vaccinated ) or on-line

Abstract:
Error feedback (EF), also known as error compensation, is an immensely popular convergence stabilization mechanism in the context of distributed training of supervised machine learning models enhanced by the use of contractive communication compression mechanisms, such as Top-k. First proposed by Seide et al (2014) as a heuristic, EF resisted any theoretical understanding until recently [Stich et al., 2018, Alistarh et al., 2018]. However, all existing analyses either i) apply to the single node setting only, ii) rely on very strong and often unreasonable assumptions, such global boundedness of the gradients, or iterate-dependent assumptions that cannot be checked a-priori and may not hold in practice, or iii) circumvent these issues via the introduction of additional unbiased compressors, which increase the communication cost. In this work we fix all these deficiencies by proposing and analyzing a new EF mechanism, which we call EF21, which consistently and substantially outperforms EF in practice. Our theoretical analysis relies on standard assumptions only, works in the distributed heterogeneous data setting, and leads to better and more meaningful rates. In particular, we prove that EF21 enjoys a fast O(1/T) convergence rate for smooth nonconvex problems, beating the previous bound of O(1/T2/3), which was shown using a (limiting) bounded gradients assumption. We further improve this to a fast linear rate for PL functions, which is the first linear convergence result for an EF-type method not relying on unbiased compressors. Since EF has a large number of applications where it reigns supreme, we believe that our 2021 variant, EF21, can have a large impact on the practice of communication efficient distributed learning.

Amina Khatun:
Exploring long-range force of Lµ − Lτ Symmetry using Atmospheric Neutrino Experiment
Abstract:
Flavor-dependent long-range leptonic force mediated by an ultralight and neutral gauge boson $Z'$ associated with $L_\mu -L_\tau$ symmetry constitutes a minimal extension of the Standard Model. We study the physical consequences of such long-range force in the oscillation of terrestrial neutrinos, particularly in $\nu_\mu$ survival channel. We show that the proposed atmospheric neutrino detector ICAL will be able to put tight constraints on such long-range force due to its capabilities of detecting neutrinos and antineutrinos separately with the wide ranges of energies and baselines. We also study the possible impact of this long-range force in the measurement of atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters and mass ordering at the ICAL.

Abstract:
The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment aims to make a precision measurement of the effective neutrino mass by leveraging the kinematics of tritium beta decay, with a 3-year sensitivity of 0.2eV (90% C.L.). Recent run campaigns, both in standard mode (using molecular tritium) and calibration mode (using 83mKr), have provided a wealth of data. This data was analyzed using the CMKAT analysis framework, which models the integrated spectra using a convolution of the source decay physics and the experiment’s response function. Results from fits to the second neutrino mass measurement campaign (KNM2) are presented, and confidence intervals on the extracted effective neutrino mass are constructed. Finally, the physics reach of the KATRIN experiment is put into context by comparison to a successor neutrino experiment, Project8, which is currently under construction.
