Mgr. Martin Venhart, PhD. (Institute of Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Vice President of SAS)
Názov: Nuclear Structure of Extremely Neutron-deficient Au Isotopes

Abstract:
The most neutron-deficient gold isotopes have been the subject of an extensive program of investigation using gamma-ray and conversion electron studies following beta decay, in-beam reaction gamma-ray spectroscopy, spectroscopy of directly produced isomeric states, laser-induced hyperfine spectroscopy and alpha-decay studies of thallium isotopes. Nevertheless, in comparison to the heavier thallium and gold isotopes, where multiple shape coexistence has been established, a rich variety of structures remains to be discovered.
In the seminar, recent results on extremely neutron-deficient 177,179Au isotopes will be presented. Most notably, strong mixing of strongly and weakly deformed structures observed in 177Au, which does not have a precedence in heavier Au isotopes. Various nuclear isomers, very recently discovered in 179Au will be presented, together with their implications on multiple shape coexistence and triaxial deformation.
The data, that will be presented, were acquired at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, within a scope of the S17 and JR115 experiments, led by the Institute of Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences.

We Enjoy Thinking. Faculty of Arts Celebrates 100 Years

Bratislava, 21 October 2021: The oldest Slovak faculty in humanities and social sciences...

The founding of the faculty was motivated by an urgent need to educate Slovak-speaking professionals for the authorities and schools of the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic. Tuition began in a modest setting and in the first year sixty-four students enrolled in the study of Slavic philology, history, ethnology and musicology. The first lecturers were Czech Professors, mainly from Charles University in Prague. Over the years the number of study fields increased as did the number of students.
The Faculty of Arts of Comenius University became the “cradle” of humanities and social sciences in Slovakia and played a pioneering role in the beginnings of education and research in many fields of science. The Faculty nurtured numerous notable personalities who went on to establish several institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences which focus on the humanities and social sciences, and who created many significant works of culture.
At present, nearly 3000 students study 220 study programmes at the Faculty of Arts. The Faculty is first among other schools in humanities and social sciences in Slovakia in terms of the number of its study programmes and the scope of its accreditation. Most students are attracted to the study of psychology, political science, marketing communication, journalism and a wide range of languages. The school also educates archaeologists, historians, psychologists, sociologists, educators, interpreters, translators from various languages and other experts in social sciences and humanities.
Several top scientific teams are working at the faculty. Its experts are frequently asked to give their opinion on various topics in the media: the political scientists regularly comment on elections and the developments on the political scene, historians bring to life notable historic events, ethnologists, sociologists and psychologists comment on various social phenomena. “We want to make sure that our research has a real impact on the society, that it helps shape critical thinking and value attitudes, and that it is relevant to current societal challenges. We enjoy thinking and our goal is to make sure everyone does too,” says the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Marián Zouhar.
The Faculty will celebrate its centenary during a ceremonial academic assembly in the Auditorium of Comenius University at Šafárik Square, and will hold various events during the academic year 2021/2022. The anniversary will be commemorated by a picture publication on the history of the faculty, a research paper by a group of authors, a work of graphic art, and a memorial medal.

Seminar of Theoretical Computer Science - Stefan Dobrev (22.10.2021)

Friday 22.10.2021 at 11:00, Lecture room M/213

Stefan Dobrev (Mathematical Institute Slovak Academy of Sciences):
Graph Exploration by Energy-Sharing Mobile Agents

Abstract:
We consider the problem of collective exploration of a known n-node edge-weighted graph by k mobile agents that have limited energy but are capable of energy transfers. The agents are initially placed at an arbitrary subset of nodes in the graph, and each agent has an initial, possibly different, amount of energy. The goal of the exploration problem is for every edge in the graph to be traversed by at least one agent. The amount of energy used by an agent to travel distance x is proportional to x. In our model, the agents can share energy when co-located: when two agents meet, one can transfer part of its energy to the other. For an n-node path, we give an O(n+k) time algorithm that either finds an exploration strategy, or reports that one does not exist. For an n-node tree with l leaves, we give an O(n+lk^2) algorithm that finds an exploration strategy if one exists. Finally, for the general graph case, we show that the problem of deciding if exploration is possible by energy-sharing agents is NP-hard, even for 3-regular graphs. In addition, we show that it is always possible to find an exploration strategy if the total energy of the agents is at least twice the total weight of the edges; moreover, this is asymptotically optimal.

Through Real Threats to Real News with Matt Apuzzo

Bratislava, 18 October 2021: Three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Matt Apuzzo, is visiting Comenius...

In his lecture, the reporter for The New York Times will focus on politically motivated attacks against journalists, and other dangers which threaten the free media. Matt Apuzzo has personally had his phone data seized by both the Obama and the Trump administrations. In his opinion, such intrusion into the work of journalists can threaten the freedom of the media and the very essence of democracy.
Matt Apuzzo is an international correspondent of The New York Times and an investigative reporter stationed in Brussels. He focuses on issues related to law enforcement, national security and intelligence services. For several years, he worked for the Associated Press, he also taught journalism at Georgetown University, and together with Adam Goldman he co-authored the book Enemies Within which describes the secret spying units operating in Islamic terrorist networks. He received his first Pulitzer Prize in 2012 for his report on the spying tactics employed by the New York Police Department against the Muslim community. In 2018, he received the prize for his articles describing the Russian influence on Donald Trump's election campaign and finally, this year, he was on the team of authors who received the prize for their coverage of the development and consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
Admission to the lecture is free but registration is necessary at
. Following the recommendation of the public health officers the event will be for “Completely Vaccinated Only”. Interpreting into Slovak will be provided and the lecture will be streamed live at
.
The appearance of the American journalist is a part of the Pulitzer Prize Lecture Series supported by Tatra Banka Foundation in cooperation with the Petit Academy Foundation and Comenius University Bratislava.
"We believe that only wise and educated people can cultivate our society. That is why Tatra Banka Foundation focuses on the arts, education and digital innovation. It has been our long-term goal to help improve the level of education in Slovakia. We have therefore been enabling inspiring lectures by acclaimed laureates of the Nobel Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for over ten years. It is a great honour to have our invitation accepted by three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Matt Apuzzo this year. His lecture, Through Real Threats to Real News, discusses a highly relevant topic and I hope it will be very interesting to a broader audience," said Michal Liday, Chairman of the Tatra Banka Foundation Board.
"Matt Apuzzo is visiting Slovakia at a time when many people receive information from unverified sources, and politicians regularly attack journalists. Through his personal experience, he shows that independent and credible reporting is also under threat in the United States. He helps us understand that the weakening of the media is one of the first steps taken by those who are out to grab unlimited power," reacts Ján Pallo, Administrator of the Petit Academy Foundation.
"The growing disrespect for information based on science and facts can be countered by top-notch independent journalism. I appreciate the fact that Comenius University will welcome Matt Apuzzo, reporter and three-time winner of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, who often faced danger, but never gave up. His work is proof that first-rate, honest reporting can improve the world," says Marek Števček, the Rector of Comenius University Bratislava.

Seminar of Theoretical Physics - Barbora Bezděková (26.10.2021)

Tuesday 26.10.2021, at 14:00 hod., Lecture room F2/125

Barbora Bezděková (Institute of Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic):
On the Light Rays Propagating in Plasma Medium around Relativistic Objects
Abstract:
Bending of light in a strong gravitational field is one of the crucial predictions of general relativity. Studies focusing on the light trajectories in the relativistic systems usually suppose that the gravitating object causing the curvature of the trajectories is set in vacuum. However, it turns out that in many astrophysical systems this assumption is not valid and it is also necessary to include the effects of refractive and dispersive media (plasma) surrounding the object. Including the medium into considerations is important - it can cause the rays to change substantially their form. The impact of refractive and dispersive media around compact objects is typically considered in problems related to the gravitational lensing. In our work we focus on how the regions allowed for propagation of rays in and close to the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole are modified due to the presence of the refractive and dispersive media with various density profiles. We investigate media with the density distributions corresponding to typical profiles of lensing galaxies, as well as with a toy model of density distribution often used in the literature - nonsingular isothermal sphere. We show that the regions permitted for the rays in a medium are substantially reduced as compared with the corresponding regions in vacuum. We also study allowed regions as seen by observers freely falling onto the black hole.
