The Principia : Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy / translation to Slovak language J. Šebesta

Doc. Juraj Šebesta translated to Slovak language books by sir Isaac Newton

A few weeks ago, our colleague doc. Juraj Šebesta published his translation of Sir Isaac Newton's books. It is not usual for a foreign book to wait for its first Slovak edition for 170 years (or 334 years from the original Latin edition). Most books lose their relevance and become forgotten much sooner. The fact that Šebest's Slovak edition of Newton's books came now cannot be just a coincidence. The book has a great potential to contribute, among other things, to the development of the learning sciences. How does the theory come about? How are hypotheses formulated? How to explain the phenomenon by referring to known facts? As doc. Šebesta writes in the preface, "although the Principles are a mathematical and partly physics book, there are many, many ideas in it, which can engage also ...".

Abstract:
Reaching center of mass energy to 13 TeV by LHC in 2015 and collecting the total integrated luminosity of 139/fb by the ATLAS experiment at this energy allowed us to measure and observe processes, which had been out of the experimental reach before. The associated production of the top-quark pair and the Z boson, shortly ttZ, is one of such processes. It is a rare process predicted by the Standard Model, with cross-section value of 0.863 pb, calculated at NLO+NNLL precision. This process was observed for the first time (with significance over 5 sigma) by the CMS experiment in data from 2015 and 2016. The ATLAS collaboration later published similar measurement, using data from the same period of data taking. In 2021, the ATLAS collaboration published the first ttZ cross section measurement using the full Run II data (2015-2018), measuring also differential cross section of this process. The talk will be focused on these two last measurements published by the ATLAS collaboration.

Abstract:
We show how to work with graphs under GAP using the package GRAPE, written by Leonard Soicher. First, we demonstrate how to create graphs, how to inspect them using the basic commands in GRAPE. Finally, we show how to efficiently create some of the famous graphs, for example the Petersen graph, Clebsch graph, Tutte-Coxeter graph, etc.

Thanks to (temporary?) loosening of restrictions regarding the COVID epidemy, we intend to conduct the seminar meetings this semester `in-person'. Hence, all of you who might choose to attend in person are welcome. Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via MS Teams. In either case, we hope to see as many of you as possible (either in person or virtually) at our Friday gatherings.

André Sopczak (IEAP CTU in Prague):
Precision Measurements in the Higgs Sector with LHC Run-2 Data
Abstract:
A concise review of precision measurements in the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics is given using ATLAS and CMS data. The results are based on LHC Run-2 data, taken between 2015 and 2018. Impressive progress has been made since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 for measuring all major production and decay modes. So far, all measurements are in good agreement with the SM predictions. Future research directions are highlighted.

Last call of SASPRO 2 programme

This is the last chance to apply for a grant from the SASPRO 2 programme for those Slovak...

SASPRO 2 is a joint programme of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Slovak University of Technology, and of Comenius University. Its objective is to bolster their research capacities by attracting researchers from excellent international institutions, to improve coordination between research and practical applications, and to promote a multidisciplinary approach to projects.
Together, these three leading science and research institutions offer 40 vacancies in various areas of research at 70 potential host organisations. Each of the two universities plans to hire 10 researchers, and the remaining 20 posts are offered at various institutes of SAS. The first call resulted in 16 offers made to individual applicants. Selection in the second call should be concluded by the end of 2021.
"Due to the limited number of posts and SASPRO 2 grants, we made eight offers to applicants interested in working for SAS. Crucially, however, we were choosing from 55 submitted applications. This shows that interest is very high and we could select the best. I trust that the last round will be equally successful and numerous applications will be received," says Pavol Šajgalík, the President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
"Renowned foreign scientists want to work at STU and we want them here. We filled one third of available post in the first call and I fully expect to be able to declare the SASPRO 2 project a success once both remaining calls are evaluated," adds the Rector of the Slovak Technical University, Oliver Moravčík.
"I hope that the SASPRO2 project will help our excellent researchers to return to Slovakia after accumulating experience abroad. I also hope that the call will attract international researchers who are interested in expanding their portfolio by cooperating with our experts," says the Rector of Comenius University, Marek Števček.
SASPRO 2 is open to researchers of all nationalities as long as they have a PhD. They can apply for a work stay of 12 to 36 months and work in any area of science. Once the selection of applicants to the third call has been finalised, the first researchers will begin working at their host institutions in the summer of 2022. All projects must conclude by 30 September, 2025.
SASPRO 2 is a COFUND programme of the Marie Curie Skłodowska Action under Horizon 2020, the largest EU Research and Innovation programme. For more information, including frequently asked questions, please visit
.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Jean Paul Zerafa (4.11.2021)

Thursday 4.11.2021 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Jean Paul Zerafa:
Hamiltonicity, k-factors and colourings: some open problems
Abstract:
In this talk we shall discuss some open problems I encountered in the last couple of years. Most of these deal with Hamiltonian cycles, k-factors (k-regular spanning subgraphs), and edge- or vertex-colourings of graphs. The first problem states that every bridgeless cubic graph G admits two 1-factors (perfect matchings) whose deletion leaves a bipartite subgraph of G. This is known as the S4-Conjecture (Mazzuoccolo, 2013) and would be true if the Berge– Fulkerson Conjecture is true. Another problem is a conjecture by Funk, Jackson, Labbate and Sheehan, from 2003, dealing with 2-factor Hamiltonian graphs (each 2-factor in such graphs is a Hamiltonian cycle). They conjecture that every bipartite cubic 2-factor Hamiltonian graph can be obtained from the complete bipartite graph K3,3 and the Heawood graph by using a graph operation known as the “star product”. We shall also discuss a recent conjecture by Ban and Linial about 2-bisections, which are 2-vertex-colourings (not necessarily proper) of graphs such that the two colour classes have the same cardinality and the monochromatic components are either a single vertex or an edge. In 2016, they conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph, except the Petersen graph, admits a 2-bisection. Finally, if time permits, we shall also talk about clique-decompositions and particular edge-colourings of the complete graph. The scope of this talk is to give a brief overview of these problems and suggest specific research routes that could be taken, hoping that this would lead to collaboration and work whilst in Bratislava.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Richard Kollár (4.11.2021)

Thursday 4.11.2021 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Richard Kollár:
Herd Immunity and Modes of Epidemic Spreading in Late Epidemic Stages

Abstract:
We review the concept of herd immunity in various types of epidemic spreading models. Particularly, we will discuss the structural failure of the herd immunity in models of spreading on contact networks resembling the real networks. We employ the configuration model to understand the important features of epidemic spreading in late epidemic stages. Overall, we show how the predictions from the models of spreading on disintegrating networks differ from the traditionally used compartment models in epidemiology. The material of the talk is based both on theory of dynamical systems and random graph theory.
