Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Radoslav Hurtiš (2.12.2021)

Thursday 2.12.2021 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Radoslav Hurtiš:
The Elder problem with reactive infiltration effects
Abstract:
The occurrence of buoyancy-driven flow and reactive solute transport in a fluid-saturated porous medium can be induced by either various human activities or natural processes. A typical example is groundwater salinization in coastal carbonate aquifers. In the current work, using the Elder problem geometry, we consider a two-dimensional porous-medium model with local chemical interactions between the solute and a mineral structure of the solid, in which the solute and the minerals are consumed and reaction products in the liquid are generated without any dissolution effects on porosity and permeability. Based on the model, we analyze and explain the impact of the geochemical processes on the flow and mass transport. For the reactive system in the regime dominated by the diffusive mass transport, we find a decrease in the net solute concentration compared to the non-reactive case. This decrease is pronounced at higher values of the Damk\"ohler number when the solute reaction rate becomes larger than the solute diffusion rate. Furthermore, we find that the structure of the flow is affected by the products present in the system when the Rayleigh number for the products is sufficiently high. In that case, numerical simulations show the formation of diluted fluid tongues exhibiting damped periodic oscillations about a non-zero mean. The pseudospectral code used to obtain the numerical simulations was verified against an analytical solution for a non-reactive and purely diffusive case.

Seminar of Theoretical Physics - Adam Smetana, Mariia Petropavlova (23.11.2021)

Adam Smetana (Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics, CTU in Prague):
Hearing solar wind by space-based gravitational wave antennas

Abstract:
Recently we have identified a possible source of noise for the space-based gravitational wave antennas, in particular for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), caused by time variations of the refractive index of the interplanetary space due to variations in the electron number density of the solar wind. We will present an update of the analysis.

Mariia Petropavlova (Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics, CTU in Prague):
Corrections to the photon index of refraction due to neutral Dirac fermions with magnetic dipole moment
Abstract:
One of the Big Bang Cosmology predictions tells us that the Universe is filled with a background of neutrinos, analogous to the cosmic microwave background. If neutrinos have a magnetic moment, then photons passing through the CNB should experience interactions with these relic neutrinos. That would result in the correction to the corresponding photon index of refraction. It is our goal to estimate the size of the CNB correction to the photon index of refraction and its dependency on the energy of the photon beam. We present here our first step when we assume a medium made of neutral Dirac fermions with magnetic dipole moment only. The effect is calculated as a quantum loop correction to the photon polarization tensor using thermal quantum field theory and its real-time formalism. We analyze two benchmark cases: The first case is analogous to the CNB medium, where we show a zero effect. The second case is analogous to a fully degenerate neutron component of neutron star, where we find either zero or non-zero effect depending on the particular values of parameters.

Once again, Michal Fečkan among the top 1% most cited mathematicians in the world

Bratislava, 18 November 2021: For the second time, Comenius University Bratislava mathematician,...

This year's list of the most cited researchers includes 6602 names from various fields and over 70 countries. These are researchers who have had a significant impact in their field in the last decade by being frequently cited. Their publications are among the top 1% most cited in the Web of Science™ database. The list is published by Clarivate, which owns and operates a collection of scientific resources, including the prestigious Current Contents database.
Michal Fečkan works at the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Mathematics of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at Comenius University. He specializes in nonlinear functional analysis, dynamic systems and their applications. His contributions to the analysis of solutions to equations involving fractional derivatives attract great attention. He has authored several scientific monographs published by reputable international publishers. At the same time, he is the sponsor of the master studies of managerial mathematics and of the doctoral program of numerical mathematics at the university. He is the holder of the 2017 Slovak Scientist of the Year award. His Hirsch index is 28.
"It is a recognition of my research work. I do mathematics because I enjoy it and I know how to do it. But I also need a response to my work, and my inclusion on this list validates my effort. I am also grateful to my family, the academy and the university for allowing me to do my research. Without them, I would not be where I am now. So my feelings are complex, but generally positive and humble," Michal Fečkan responded to the award.
He received the Highly Cited Researcher award for the first time in 2019 and repeated his success in 2021. More good news for Slovakia is that other Slovak researchers are also on the list this year. The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra has two representatives - Marián Brestič and Marek Živčák. The fourth Slovak researcher is Kaudia Jomová from the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra.
The Czech Republic, Poland and Austria have ten scientists in the ranking each, while Hungary has three. The largest proportion of highly cited researchers are from the U.S., 2622; China, 935; and the United Kingdom, 492.
"I am particularly pleased by the international recognition of Professor Michal Fečkan, who is one of the world's leading experts in his field. His research was also acknowledged by Nobel Prize winner Kip Thorne during his recent visit to Comenius University. The case of Michal Fečkan is a proof that Slovak universities can do world-class research," concluded the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.

Thousands of students and teachers march for free universities

Bratislava, 16 November 2021: A responsible protest for free universities brought thousands into...

The protest against the proposed amendment of the Higher Education Act was organised by Comenius University Bratislava in cooperation with the Slovak Technical University, the Council of Higher Education Institutions and the Student Council for Higher Education. The Slovak Rectors' Conference also expressed its support for the event.
Slovak academia is disappointed with the approach chosen by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, which ignored the proposals of the contact group and is forcibly attempting to have universities directly managed by political nominees. The universities mainly criticise the proposed legislative amendment for enabling direct control of universities by political nominees, depriving the universities of control over their property and failing to address the real problems of higher education. Next year’s budget for Slovak universities is expected to be cut by €28 million, even though it already is much lower than in Czechia, Hungary or Poland.
The organisers chose safety yellow to be the colour of the protest. Yellow respirators handed out to protesters and mandatory distancing reflected the protest’s responsibility. Protesters carried yellow balloons and yellow banners with the slogan "Responsible protest for free universities". Other mottoes of the protest included: No Going Back Before November 89; Less State in Schools; We Want to Reform, Not Deform.
Several officials of universities addressed the crowd on Námestie Slobody (Freedom Square). Filip Šuran, president of the Student Council of Higher Education, warned the politicians that they were taking free universities from us. "Most of the young people you oust go to the Czech Republic. Czechia has long been investing in dormitories, campuses, teaching facilities, laboratories, but first and foremost, in highly motivated educators who don’t need to maintain two additional jobs just to support their families. If the system of administration is the same in the Czech Republic, then it can’t be the problem. If you're saying you want curb the exodus of the young, I'm happy. But this amendment will certainly not stop it, quite the opposite," he added.
Martin Putala, president of the Council of Higher Education Institutions, said that it was not true that the ministry had been discussing the matter with higher education institutions for over a year. According to him, the amendment published after the meetings of the contact group is based on the same faulty principles as the original proposal from the beginning of the year. "Dear Minister, and Secretary of State, this is not how we envision cooperation. You're supposed to be here for the universities, rather than vice versa. We urge you to accept our main points or to step down," said Martin Putala.
"The Rectors of Slovak higher education institutions support reforms of the Slovak higher education system. This amendment, however, was rejected by the Rectors who demand its withdrawal. We formulated a list of inputs for the inter-departmental review. We will fight to make sure these fundamental issues are reflected in the negotiations," said Rudolf Kropil, President of the Slovak Rectors' Conference, adding that higher education needs to be financed better even as it can match the schools in the countries of advanced Europe and the rest of the world. "We want a high-quality reform," he emphasized.
"They are telling us that we are unable to manage our own affairs. They are telling us that we are unable to manage our own property. They are also telling us that we, the universities, are responsible for all of Slovakia’s ills in the past 30 years, rather than the incompetent, often corrupt, and plagiarizing politicians," responded Marek Števček, the Rector of Comenius University Bratislava. "University students were present at every turning point in the history of this country. University scientists are working on every problem faced by this country. The principle of self-administration and self-governing institutions are some of the last things which still work in this country," added the Rector of Comenius University.
"As a student, I am angry and I am disappointed," said Nicole Makóová from the University of Trnava. "This amendment does nothing to improve study conditions. We come to study at universities and other higher education institutions to learn and to be taught by scientists and educators who have the freedom of research, of teaching and of disseminating their scientific opinions," she concluded.
The student anthem, Gaudeamus Igitur, was played at the end of the protest.

New dining hall will soon open in the Mlyny dormitories

Bratislava, 16 November 2021: The pandemic accelerated the efforts of the management of the...

Following the recommendations of the Slovak Public Procurement Office, Comenius University Bratislava chose the new operator in an open procedure. The contract service is defined as the provision of meals and lease of the university dining hall. The call for tenders was published in the Public Procurement Bulletin, in the Official Journal of the European Union, as well as on the University’s website and on social networks. Bidders from all European Union states could submit their tenders as long as they met the eligibility criteria.
The bidders were required to demonstrate they had owed no debts to the State (the good standing condition), and prove that they served at least 620,000 meals in the last three years to show their ability to perform under the contract. The bids were evaluated according to the main award criterion which was the total amount of lease offered for the five-year duration of the contact.
Three bidders submitted their bids in the open procedure. One bid was submitted late and so only the remaining two bids were considered. According to the law, late tenders cannot be taken into consideration and are not shown by the electronic system. The Bid Evaluation Committee which included three representatives of the Rectorate, the dormitories and the students each, met on 12 November to evaluate the tenders received, and it informed the bidders about its decision as required by law. The decision was also published in the contracting authority profile. The winning bid of EUR 1,212,060.70 was submitted by Fit Food, s.r.o., while the unsuccessful bidder, TOMIR, s.r.o., offered EUR 636,600.00.
"The University has been operating the large dining hall using its own resources and has been accumulating a loss in doing so. The restaurant business is specific and we decided to leave the operation of the dining hall to professionals. We promoted the open competition by all possible means, including a press release, on social networks, and by publishing it in the EU’s Official Journal," said Radomír Masaryk, Comenius University Vice-Rector for Exernal Relations. "This call for tenders is another proof that the current management of the university is committed to transparency and cost-effectiveness. In 2020 alone, the dining hall generated a loss of more than half a million euros. From now on, the preparation of meals will be in the hands of experienced professionals and the university will draw an income from the lease," he added.
There is a ten-day period after the publication of the award decision, within which objections can be submitted. The university management will then put the award decision to the vote in the Academic Senate of Comenius University which convenes on 15 December 2021. Once the contract award is approved by the Senate the university invites the successful bidder to sign the contract. The new dining hall will begin operating once the operator has completed any renovation work which may be necessary before the restaurant opens to the public. The university also intends to collect student feedback on the quality of the meals in the largest student dormitories, allowing it to monitor the quality and variety of the food served.

Comenius University takes to the streets: Fighting for university freedom once again after 32 years

Bratislava, 8 November 2021: Comenius University Bratislava, the Slovak Technical University (STU),...

The planned amendment of the Higher Education Act has forced universities and the bodies which represent them to launch a public protest. The academia is disappointed with the way in which the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport has ignored the proposals of the joint working group and in which it attempts to have universities directly managed by politically nominated candidates. The protest gains traction as Club 500, an association of large employers, joins the reservations of academia and calls for the withdrawal of the proposed amendment. It emphasises the need to reach a consensus rather than ‘force a square peg in round hole’, after a meeting of the Slovak Parliament’s Education Committee under chairman Richard Vašečka.
"I was a pupil at a primary school in 1989 but I could feel the spirit of the revolution emanating from the city squares in November. It is sad that thirty two years after the Velvet Revolution we have to take to the streets again to defend the freedom of universities. But there is no other way. Every generation lives through moments when it can no longer remain silent and when it must defy the arrogance of those in power. That time has just come for us," said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.
Comenius University has been at the forefront of managing the pandemic responsibly and this protest is no exception: distancing rules will be observed and FFP2 masks will be required.
The Responsible Protest for Free Universities is supported by the Slovak Club of University Faculty Deans, the Student Council of the University in Trnava and by the University of Economics in Bratislava. Other supporters and details of the event will be published on
. Separate events are organised by student self-governments, for example at
STU opened
, which was signed by 1600 people in just two days.
Universities criticise the proposed amendment mainly for introducing the threat of direct control of universities by political nominees, the loss of control over their property and the fact that the amendment fails to address the real problems of higher education. Slovak universities are facing budget cuts in the next year amounting to €28 million even though their funding is already lower than in the Czech Republic, Hungary or Poland.

Danica Basarić (Institute of Mathematics, Czech Academy of Sciences ):
Semiflow Selections in Fluid Dynamics

Abstract:
Well-posedness of systems describing the motion of fluids in the class of strong and weak solutions represents one of the most challenging problems in the modern theory of partial differential equations. To handle the problem of uniqueness, one possible way is to perform a semiflow selection, identifying, among all the solutions emanating from the same initial data, the one satisfying the semigroup property. We study under which assumptions it is possible to guarantee the existence of a semiflow selection, choosing the Skorokhod space of càglàd functions as trajectory space. Subsequently, we apply this abstract machinery to systems arising in fluid dynamics, including the compressible Navier-Stokes system and models describing general non-Newtonian fluids.

Thanks to (temporary?) loosening of restrictions regarding the COVID epidemy, we intend to conduct the seminar meetings this semester `in-person'. Hence, all of you who might choose to attend in person are welcome. Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via MS Teams. In either case, we hope to see as many of you as possible (either in person or virtually) at our Friday gatherings.
