UNIVERSITY LIFE BEYOND THE LECTURES: COMENIUS UNIVERSITY DISTRIBUTES GRANTS TO STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS

Bratislava, 29 November 2021: Comenius University Bratislava pledged to support student...

During the past year, Rector Števček had a number of meetings with all student associations which are active at the university. Together they discussed the various projects of the associations at the thirteen faculties, and the hurdles they faced. The proposed grant scheme is a response to the needs of the students, formulated during those meetings. Comenius University will support nineteen projects, among them the Slovak Association of Dental Students, the Martin Club of Medical Students or the Trojsten project. Students applied for funding to renovate premises and buy equipment, to produce educational events, to print magazines, or raise terrarium animals for the zoologists.
"We tried to support as many projects as possible. We believe it is important for the students to develop their talents outside of school and I consider it my duty to make sure the conditions are right. I want the students to feel that their university supports them whenever they want to do something meaningful for themselves, their classmates, the university itself, or the general public. I am convinced that this approach will produce a healthy benefit for the society as a whole," said the rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.
The projects which received grants also included the Gymnik folk ensemble which is active at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Comenius University. More than 900 members passed through its ranks over the years. The grant will be used to purchase folk costumes and develop a ceremonial repertoire for the ensemble’s 60th anniversary.
The Družba 17 Boxing Club plans use the grant money to complete their gym and purchase sports equipment. In the future, its members plan to establish a civic association which would become a member of the Slovak Boxing Federation. This would be the first official university boxing club in Slovakia in history.
Speleoklub UK Bratislava is developing an education project entitled: An excursion into speleology from the point of view of natural sciences. It will offer its students new approaches to teaching karst studies, geology, speleobiology and other disciplines, possibly motivating new research and discoveries. The club plans to use the grant to buy basic equipment for those interested in caving.
The Bratislava Association of Medical Students is planning to use the grant money to renovate and restore its premises. It also plans to purchase specialist teaching aids such as testicle and breast models to help educate the public about sexually transmitted diseases, as well as breast- and prostate cancer.
The Slovak Association of Pharmacy Students organises the 2022 Pharmacy Communication Championships. The aim of the event is to improve the communication skills of pharmacy students, which are essential for their future jobs. In a simulated pharmacy environment they will "role-play" and observe possible errors in the communication with patients or in the choice of pharmacotherapy.
University social networks and Naša univerzita (Our University), the oldest Slovak university magazine, will keep you informed about the activities of student associations.

INFORMATION ABOUT EDUCATION DURING LOCKDOWN

update from 25 NOV 2021

1. The way of teaching stays without changes. Theoretical teaching at the departments will take place on-line. Practical training continues to take place in person, except for those workplaces where, due to the current epidemic situation, the head of the workplace/subject guarantor decides otherwise (on-line or hybrid teaching).
According to the order of the Rector of Comenius University no. 17/2021 of 25 Nov 2021, will be a continuation of full-time practical training for medical departments permitted by the decision of the Rector of Comenius University at the request of the Dean of the Faculty. We have already submitted this request.
2. If longer PowerPoint presentations are part of the practical training, it is necessary to present them on-line. Students' hospital stays need to take advantage of their direct contact with patients.
3. The management of LF UK was repeatedly warned about non-compliance with the OTP regime at departments. Therefore, we strongly ask you to OTP check each student before the start of full-time teaching. At the same time, I ask you to follow all anti-epidemic measures during teaching (maximum number of people in the room, use of PPE). Failure to comply with these principles will be considered a breach of work discipline.
4. To enable the necessary contact of 6th-year students with patients, the Management of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University decided to allow final year students in COVID-19 departments in strict compliance with hygiene principles, including the use of prescribed PPE. Such assistance will be recognized as practical training in the subject of the field.
5. In the upcoming days, the decree of the Public Health Office (PHO) of the Slovak Republic will be published, based on which entry will be allowed only to persons who can prove any of the following certificates:
- on vaccination against Covid-19,
- overcoming Covid-19,
- negative PCR / Ag test,
- possibly by performing a test/self-test directly at the employer.
We will inform you about the PHO SR decree and testing conditions immediately after its publication.

Comenius University Seeks Ways to Open Up to the World: Welcoming Thirteen Postdocs from Foreign Universities

Bratislava, 26 November 2021: Comenius University Bratislava set aside nearly one quarter of a...

This is a new programme of Comenius University which was launched this year, although some faculties had postdoctoral exchanges in the past. The activity is intended to support mobility among research sites and increase the attractiveness of careers in science. Postdoctoral researchers are graduates of doctoral studies with a PhD degree. Top universities generally expect them to go and gather experience at a different university, rather than stay where they earned their title. The postdoctoral experience tends to be an intermediate stage between doctoral studies and the position of a university researcher or lecturer.
Amina Khatun from India will be hosted by the lab of Fedor Šimkovic at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University. The postdoctoral researcher will work at the Department of Nuclear Physics to analyse experimental data in order to discover the as-yet unknown basic properties of neutrinos, which are key to understanding the past, the present and the future of the universe. "Our group actively collaborates in two world-leading neutrino experiments: Baikal-GVD, to detect high energy cosmic neutrinos in Lake Baikal; and the JUNO experiment located in the Jiangmen underground lab. The latter will detect antineutrinos from two nuclear reactors which are 53 km away, neutrinos originating in the fusion reactions of light nuclei in the Sun, and low-energy neutrinos created in the Earth's atmosphere due to cosmic radiation," says Amina Khatun. "Comenius University has a vibrant environment for higher education and cutting-edge research," she says of her motivation to apply for the stay.
Successful candidates include young scientists under 35 years of age from Belgium, Iran, France, India, Poland, Tunisia, the Czech Republic, and also from Slovakia.
One postdoctoral researcher has joined the group of Radovan Šebesta to help develop the synthesis of catalytically and biologically active compounds using mechanochemistry. "At modern universities abroad doctoral and postdoctoral researchers form the bulk of their research capacity. In Slovakia, unfortunately, the concept of postdoctoral researcher had until recently been virtually unknown. At the same time, a healthy circulation of people among universities and countries is extremely important because it contributes to an exchange of experience and ideas. It enriches both the researchers and our home environment. I therefore consider the postdoctoral initiative of Comenius University to be very useful and I hope it will continue," said Radovan Šebesta, Professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University.
The university allocated about €700,000 for the programme and planned to fill 21 positions in various fields of science. Eventually, thirteen candidates succeeded in the selection process. Most of them, six, will work at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, five candidates will join the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, and one candidate each will be hosted by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Comenius University. The faculties will annually receive 18,624 euros to help cover two thirds of each postdoctoral researcher’s salary. The remaining third will be paid by the faculty.
"I am pleased that in the first year eight of our faculties showed interest in creating a postdoctoral position. Although we did not manage to fill all the positions, I am convinced that this is a good start. I believe that the number of these positions will increase in the coming years. This is one of the ways in which we open up to the world,” said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.

Abstract:
The energy of a graph G, E(G), is the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. This concept was first introduced by Gutman in 1978. In this talk, we try to present some lower and upper bounds for the energy of graphs and present their structural and spectral properties and also present some open conjectures in this area.

International award for the FM CU

Faculty of Management, Comenius University received prestigious award in 2021 in the Eduniversal...

Since 2008, the Faculty of Management has been rated among the best Business Schools in the world, now once again defending its position with an excellent rating in the Excellent Business Schools category.
The focus on research, international openness and international visibility are the key elements of the strategic priorities of the faculty.
The Eduniversal ranking includes 1000 business schools and universities from 154 countries in 9 regions of the world. The best universities are selected by an eleven-member International Scientific Committee (ISC). The Eduniversal system rates schools according to their international reputation at a national and global level, and by geographical zone. The objective is to establish a global mapping system that would take into account the international influence and reputation of each academic institution. An important part of the evaluation is the Deanś choice where they give their answers to the following question: "Which school would you recommend to your students if they wanted to study in that country?"
The aim of the ranking is to provide students and professionals with a global view of top universities and to present opportunities where to obtain a quality management education. "We are very proud that we have received this prestigious award and that the Faculty of Management, which has an excellent name in Slovakia, is gaining a solid reputation abroad," said prof. Michal Greguš, the Dean of the Faculty of Management, Comenius University.
The Faculty of Management, Comenius University is evaluated in this ranking as a faculty, while in competition it is also compared with large monothematic universities. We achieved this success mainly due to the intensity in Erasmus + programs and references from these mobilities.
The award ceremony took place on November 17-19, 2021.
