Abstract:
ALICE, one of the four big experiments at the CERN LHC, is a detector dedicated to heavy-ion physics. A high interaction rate environment causes pile-up which necessitates the use of advanced methods of data analysis. Over the recent years machine learning (ML) has come to dominate multi-dimensional data analysis. However, it is more difficult to interpret the ML models and to evaluate their uncertainties, which are offered by classical approaches.
In this seminar we would like to present new tool
which we recently developed within ALICE. The main goal of the tool is to simplify data analysis in many dimensions, to fit (ML regression) and visualize N dimensional function and to enable easy functional composition using non-parametric and parametric functions. Using RootInteractive tool strongly simplifies multidimensional parameter optimization, we enabled interactive expert communication within ALICE working groups. The tool is aimed not only for computer experts but is used by "standard” users (master, PhD) and for the educational purposes.
We will show how RootInteractive is used in ALICE for reconstruction, calibration, MC simulations and also preliminary physics analysis studies. In more detail, we will demonstrate how we combine ML with a parametric model, in order to yield a compact representation of physics processes. Our main use case is the calibration of space charge distortions, which requires estimates of reducible and irreducible uncertainties. We will demonstrate how this and other use cases (Particle Identification, V0/Cascade reconstruction, MC/data remapping) are solved with our approach and will describe the features of the software we developed.

Seminar of Theoretical Physics - Juraj Tekel (14.12.2021)

Tuesday 14.12.2021, at 14:00 hod., online

Juraj Tekel:
Fuzzy field theories in the string modes formalism
Abstract:
Fuzzy spaces are, among other things, toy models for spaces with a discreet structure at small distances. As such, they provide a laboratory to study the consequences of this discreetness on the properties of physical theories, such as the theory of scalar fields. The standard approach to this theory is very similar to the usual treatment of field theories on continuous spaces - momentum basis, Feynman diagrams, and loop integrals. In this talk, we present a different formulation of the scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere - in terms of the string modes, which are functions optimally localized in position and momentum space. We show how this greatly simplifies the computation of the loop contributions in position space and provides some new insights into the structure of the effective action of the theory.
Abstract:
In this talk we examine the following question. Let G be a cyclically k-edge-connected cubic graph with a k-edge-cut separating a cyclic component C different from the k-cycle. How can we complete C to a cyclically k-edge-connected cubic graph H? Our work extends the results of Andersen et al. from 1988 who studied this problem for the case k = 4, and our recent results for the case k = 5. We show that if the resulting graph H has girth at least k and H – C is cyclic and different from the k-cycle, then H is cyclically k-edge-connected. Based on this result we provide an algorithm determining whether a given graph C can be a subgraph of some cyclically k-edge-connected cubic graph. Moreover, for k = 6 we show that each such component C can be completed to a cyclically 6-edge-connected cubic graph by adding 8 additional vertices forming two 6-cycles that share a path of length three.
This is a joint work with Edita Máčajová.

ENLIGHT Rectors Endorse ENLIGHT Sustainability Engagement

Bratislava, 3 December 2021: Today the nine ENLIGHT rectors endorsed a joint Sustainability...

With this joint Sustainability Engagement the ENLIGHT-members want to make a strong claim to be key contributors of sustainable development and to lead by example with concrete actions in governance, education and research.
„This event makes the network of nine universities significantly more real. In the near future, universities will intensively discuss new ways of integrating and will talk about how far they want to become interlinked," says Comenius University Rector Marek Števček.
Main elements of the ENLIGHT Sustainability Engagement are:

In line with its mission statement all ENLIGHT institutions want to underline the importance of education to empower learners to tackle major societal transitions and to promote equitable quality of life and sustainability. As future change-agents students need more opportunities to gain specific knowledge, skills and innovation potential to combat climate change. ENLIGHT wants to extend the integration of sustainability education to all study levels and throughout all disciplines and install a ‘culture of sustainability’ throughout our universities.

While enhancing the opportunities for students to engage in international learning and for staff to cooperate with international peers, ENLIGHT is working on structural ways to harmonize internationalisation with sustainability and to reduce carbon emissions.

As critical friends the ENLIGHT universities are committed to use the diversity of the alliance as a strength to identify frontrunner approaches and benchmarks through peer review for continuously improving our institutional policies. Our aim is to set new standards for each other as partners in improving our strategies to fight against climate change. Herein, the social dimension is essential to create equitable well-being.

New monitoring system will increase security at dormitories

Bratislava, 2 December 2021: A new monitoring system installed by Comenius University Bratislava at...

Security officers are being equipped with personal cameras (bodycams), which will record their interventions. These may include responses of security officers to incidents which occur during their shift, like dormitory rules violations or the meting out of penalties. The new system will allow a greater accuracy in disciplinary proceedings and during security interventions. The aim is greater transparency while intervening and a fairer resolution of possible disputes.
This new system will also improve the university's capability to monitor compliance with anti-pandemic rules. The system complements existing monitoring options and increases the level of protection of both students’ property and of university assets.
The bodycams of concierge and security staff will monitor the areas near public entrances to Comenius University buildings, as well as turnstiles, ramps, corridors, waste bin areas, the dining hall and, in case of an intervention in rooms, even those areas. In case of an incident, recordings will be stored for 72 hours in a secure data storage. If an incident becomes the subject of an inquiry into a possible breach of guest rules or a criminal investigation, the recording may be stored for up to 90 days. For the sake of the students’ own security, the university will keep detailed records of who and when created and stored a recording. The whole system cost a little over EUR 1,000.
“We have worked on the university security project for some time. Our intention is to help students feel safe in our dormitories. With the help of the new system, any disputes can be resolved in a more transparent and fair manner, and, above all, faster,” said the Quaestor of Comenius University Ingrid Kútna Želonková.

Abstract:
In this talk we shall discuss some open problems I encountered in the last couple of years. Most of these deal with Hamiltonian cycles, k-factors (k-regular spanning subgraphs), and edge- or vertex-colourings of graphs. The first problem states that every bridgeless cubic graph G admits two 1-factors (perfect matchings) whose deletion leaves a bipartite subgraph of G. This is known as the S4-Conjecture (Mazzuoccolo, 2013) and would be true if the Berge– Fulkerson Conjecture is true. Another problem is a conjecture by Funk, Jackson, Labbate and Sheehan, from 2003, dealing with 2-factor Hamiltonian graphs (each 2-factor in such graphs is a Hamiltonian cycle). They conjecture that every bipartite cubic 2-factor Hamiltonian graph can be obtained from the complete bipartite graph K3,3 and the Heawood graph by using a graph operation known as the “star product”. We shall also discuss a recent conjecture by Ban and Linial about 2-bisections, which are 2-vertex-colourings (not necessarily proper) of graphs such that the two colour classes have the same cardinality and the monochromatic components are either a single vertex or an edge. In 2016, they conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph, except the Petersen graph, admits a 2-bisection. Finally, if time permits, we shall also talk about clique-decompositions and particular edge-colourings of the complete graph. The scope of this talk is to give a brief overview of these problems and suggest specific research routes that could be taken, hoping that this would lead to collaboration and work whilst in Bratislava.

iBobor competition: How to Teach Students That Computers Are Not Just For Surfing on the Web

Bratislava, 30 November 2021: In November the iBobor IT competition for children took place on its...

The iBobor competition is the Slovak version of the Bebras computer science competition (“Beaver” in Lithuanian). Slovakia is one of about
where the competition is held. Last year, more than 2.4 million students from 56 countries took part in it. In Slovakia, the competition took place on 8-12 November this year for the 15th time. A total of 102,833 contestants from 1,406 schools participated in 8 categories. They represent 1.88% of the total population of Slovakia. The Department of Didactics in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University cooperated in the organisation of the event with aSc - Applied Software Consultants, and other partners, including Soitron, Freed and the Slovak Informatics Society.
“iBobor is not a competition solely for precocious computer geniuses. It is meant to awaken the curiosity of any student from the second grade in the elementary school to high school seniors. It is for anyone who likes to use a computer, likes to think and wants to measure their strengths in modern computer science, logical thinking and digital technology skills,” said the project leader Monika Tomcsányiová from Comenius University. “In the competition, we do not focus on testing the participants’ memory or factual knowledge. Instead we analyse whether girls and boys have a desire to think, rack their brain and see for themselves that computers are not just tools for finding information on the Internet or communicating with friends. The incredible attention which this competition attracts every year tells us that there are many students like that in Slovakia,” she continued.
The competition takes place in the EduPage platform, which was developed by the competition’s partner, aSc - Applied Software Consultants. Students can participate online from their web browsers. The new platform improves the way in which the tasks are displayed on different digital devices and enables contestants to use their smartphones. Like in previous years, the students receive a code which enable them to log in on the day of the competition. Depending on the category, the competition consists of 9, 12 or 15 assignments, which need to be solved in 30 or 40 minutes. Some of the tasks are simple and require a clear and concise answer, to be chosen from four options. Others are small interactive assignments where a problem requires a programming or algorithmic solution.
“There is a lot of talk about the need to motivate young people to study computer science. I am pleased that colleagues from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University are actively helping to increase the profile of information technology in schools. I believe that many clever young people will go on to study at this faculty and that they will eventually become IT specialists,” concluded the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.
