University adopts its own gender equality plan. Discrimination will not be tolerated

Bratislava, 3 February 2022: The largest Slovak university supports gender equality. On 24 January...

The university will not tolerate any disrespectful or unequal treatment of human beings. Ever since its establishment it has been promoting key values of human existence: truth, kindness and justice. By adopting the Gender Equality Plan the University strives to initiate changes which will lead to an open, supportive and non-discriminating environment for all employees and students.
The objectives of the gender plan should be achieved between 2022 - 2024. With the help of the document, the oldest Slovak university strives to achieve the following:

reconcile work and family life;

achieve gender balance in management and in decision-making;

achieve gender equality in staff recruitment and career development;

integrate the gender dimension in research and teaching content;

introduce measures for combating gender-based violence, including sexual harassment.

The plan demands the formation of working conditions and career development rules that eliminate gender inequalities in employment and management positions. Through cultural and symbolic change, it seeks to eliminate stereotypes and prejudices, to promote the values of equality and inclusiveness, and to create a supportive work environment. Between 2020 and 2023, the Faculty of Arts works on an E4E project entitled "Gender Equality Standards for AHMSSBL Institutions Through Europe - Equal4Europe", which will help the entire University to identify and deploy such tools that support the integration of gender in education and research, reduce gender imbalance in decision-making bodies and remove the remaining obstacles to career growth of women.
It is also important to ensure that women achieve a higher representation in management positions. Furthermore, no degree or form of sexual harassment is tolerated and the university environment must be non-discriminatory, safe and open. Steps are also being taken to raise the profile of female researchers and to strengthen the involvement of the academic community in promoting gender equality and diversity. The implementation and compliance with the measures is the remit of the relevant organizational units of Faculties and the Rectorate of Comenius University.

Scientists Discover a Perfectly Preserved Lizard from the Mesozoic

Bratislava, 2 February 2022: It lived 45 million years before the famous Tyrannosaurus rex, but it...

The lizard trapped in amber was named Retinosaurus hkamtiensis. It is a juvenile specimen consisting of a head and the anterior portion of the trunk, including the pectoral girdle and forelimbs. The length of its skull is only about one centimeter, so the lizard was relatively small, but amber finds usually contain such small specimens. Tree resin is a natural trap for many organisms which are preserved in it when it hardens.
"I will never forget the moment back in December 2019 in Bangkok, when I looked into the microscope and saw a lizard that was so perfectly preserved in amber that it looked like it died just a few days ago. This was not a common sight, even for an experienced paleontologist, " Andrej Čerňanský from Comenius University describes the origins of
.
The specimen has a uniquely preserved, three-dimensional skeleton. Compared to other specimens found in Myanmar amber, this one has complete and amazingly intact skin. Individual scales and their shape are discernible both on the head and on the body. The left side even preserves the eye and eyelid. Surprisingly, inside the specimen scientists found the trachea and partial bronchi. The discovery offers a unique opportunity to see the real appearance of a reptile which crawled on Earth 110 million years ago. This specimen is interesting because it has perfectly preserved soft tissues, while in most other cases little more than the skeleton remains.
Since its discovery, the fossil has travelled the world. First, it was brought from Asia to Texas in the U.S., where it was scanned using CT. It was then flown to Australia, where researchers analyzed it with a very powerful variant of computed tomography - the synchrotron. This method allowed them to study every little detail of the prehistoric lizard. It was eventually brought to Switzerland, where it was placed in a museum.
Phylogenetic analysis of molecular data placed the Retinosaurus reptile as a relative of the Tepexisaurus and Xantusiidae lineages. This points to an interesting hypothesis, that the present group known exclusively from North and Central America may have originated elsewhere than indicated by their hitherto known biogeography. The reason could be an early split in lizard lineages during the Early Cretaceous which would have occured, in this case, somewhere in Gondwana (the Southern continents and India). The Burma Terrane microplate (today's Myanmar) was probably not part of Asia at the time when our lizard lived. Back then, the area may have been an island which separated from Australia and travelled northwest.
"The topic is still quite controversial and leaves room for other interpretations of the origin of animal lineages occurring during the Cretaceous in this area," explains evolutionary biologist and palaeontologist Andrej Čerňanský from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. The scientist has long been studying vertebrates trapped in Myanmar's amber, which appears to still hide many secrets.

Slovak Universities: Struggle for Survival Instead of Reforms?

Bratislava, 1 February 2022: For two years, Slovak universities have been at the forefront of the...

In 2022, Slovak universities will receive EUR 27 million less in state funding than last year, while another EUR 18 million are earmarked for centres of excellence. Although we welcome the support of centres of excellence, we believe this support should come from additional resources rather at the expense of existing subsidies. The sharp rise in the prices of energy and materials is another problem which complicates the day-to-day operation of universities, significantly jeopardizing ongoing European projects. According to preliminary calculations, universities in Slovakia will face a shortfall of more than €12 million in energy costs alone. This year, Comenius University estimates it will pay at least €5 million more for energies than last year. The shortfall in commercial income due to the COVID-19 pandemic compounds the planned reduction of subsidies and the radical rise in energy prices.
All of this means that universities will need to cut development projects and renovations, increase prices for dormitory housing, cancel study programmes and lay off some of their employees. The economic situation of Slovak universities is alarming and it will have considerable social impacts, affecting particularly students. All of this is happening at a time when universities need to make every effort to cope with the new, stricter accreditation rules. Additionally, in February, the National Council of the Slovak Republic will begin discussing an amendment to the Higher Education Act, which has been hotly contested by the universities.
"Our university trains doctors, judges, pharmacists, psychologists, speech therapists, teachers, computer scientists, historians and many other professions. Our experts sequence virus genomes and calculate models of how the pandemic will spread. Failure to finance public universities can cause irreparable damage to the entire Slovak society. Once a department or program disappears due to economic restrictions, it might never be restored. This applies particularly to study programmes which may be local, but play an irreplaceable role in Slovakia. Once they disappear, no-one will be able to study them in Slovakia at all - leading to more student-drain and a legitimate absence of internationalization, because foreign students will not feel attracted to come here either, " said Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University. "Politicians declared a desire to reform universities. However, under these conditions, we can hardly consider development when we have to fight for bare survival, " added the rector of the largest Slovak university.
"The Slovak University of Technology entered the new year with a provisional budget. We had no idea how much money we would get from the state and the rules governing the distribution of state subsidies to Slovak universities in 2022 were unclear," said Oliver Moravčík, Rector of STU. "This is not a good way to foster improvements in quality. We call on the Ministry of Education and on the Government of the Slovak Republic to prevent further destabilization of the academic environment. It is crucial for our economy to offer quality professional training and educate capable computer scientists, architects, mechanical engineers or food chemists. In the current situation, however, even the best of managers would be hard pressed to find adequate tools to guarantee growth," he added.
All three statutory bodies representing universities have now joined the Rectors of Comenius University and STU in expressing concerns about the situation of Slovak public universities:

The Slovak Council of Higher Education Institutions fundamentally disagrees with the cuts of state subsidies, believing them to be destructive and posing a critical threat to the quality of education and of creative activity.

The Slovak Rectors' Conference expressed its outrage at the proposed distribution of subsidies, which it considers to be very destructive, especially in the context of energy price increases, posing a direct threat to the operation of universities. According to the Conference, a destructive intervention like this has not been seen in the history of universities since 1989.

The Student Council for Higher Education believes that the reduction of funding for public universities will cause a student drain, which is in direct contradiction to the proclaimed manifesto of the Slovak Government.

Comenius University and the Slovak University of Technology call on the National Council of the Slovak Republic to give due consideration to the potential negative effects on the Slovak society

The title of Professor was awarded to the following experts from Comenius University:

Prof. MUDr. Alexandra Bražinová, PhD., MPH, Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University,

Prof. MUDr. Ivana Dedinská, PhD., Internal Medicine Diseases, Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University,

Prof. Ing. Vladimír Frecer, DrSc., Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Comenius University.

The President said in her address that the new Professors are accepting their decrees at a difficult time for Slovakia. "The pandemic affected all aspects of our society and it did not spare universities either. The largest survey of its kind in Slovakia, in which 20,000 university students were queried, showed that universities managed the pandemic very well from the organizational point of view. The flip side is that 39% of graduating students are not convinced they obtained adequate knowledge and neither do they feel prepared for life after graduation."
The president also said that we are at a point when we have an opportunity to revitalize the whole education system and reform our universities and higher education institutions. "In this regard, I rely on your input and contribution, because you know better than anyone else how to advance our education and research to the next level."
The President also reminded the newly appointed professors that the society expects them to provide quality education and produce top notch research, while building the society’s respect towards education. "We expect you to be actively involved in public discourse in consequential disputes, and to demonstrate through public debate how actual scientific knowledge differs from noisy, but impactful ignorance," she added.
