STUDY PROGRAMMES IN ENGLISH

STUDY PROGRAMMES IN ENGLISH AT FACUTLY OF LAW COMENIUS UNIVERSITY IN BRATISLAVA

Compared to the recent past, the higher education market is saturated with a large number of study programmes in which it is very difficult for a potential applicant to study to find one´s way - the offer far exceeds the demand. The ongoing demographic changes also play a role in lower numbers of students when differences in individual population years are visible. The influence of the modern fast age, when it is not enough to build your name exclusively on the brand and passively wait for students but to actively address them with the offer - to distinguish yourself from other educational institutions by quality and diversity of study programmes and subjects, must be taken into consideration too.
Therefore, as part of the continuous improvement and innovation of teaching methods and setting higher goals, Comenius University in Bratislava, Faculty of Law (PraF UK) started to launch study programmes taught in English. With this action, we have expanded and are constantly expanding the offer of foreign language subjects taught at our faculty and we address not only Slovak but also foreign students who do not have to travel mainly to Western Europe seeking quality education but will also find it in Slovakia, at our faculty.
The actual launching of these study programmes was preceded by creating a range of subjects and in the academic year, 2017/2018 our efforts resulted in the launching of an accredited master's degree programme in law, which is entirely carried out in English. It is intended for those candidates who want to gain a more profound knowledge of the European Union law and international law and are interested in finding a job in this field, for example in multinational law firms, business corporations, central government, or within institutions of a transnational nature or international organizations. The acquired master's degree also allows them to enrol in one of the professional chambers in Slovakia or to practice one of the legal professions.
„In response to the English master's programme and also reflecting the growing interest of students and graduates of secondary schools (both domestic and foreign) in studying law in English in the first degree of study, we launched in the academic year 2020/2021 in cooperation with the Faculty of Management CU an accredited two-subject study programme in Management and Law, which offers knowledge from both of these disciplines in a synthesized form. Secondary school students often do not know how to choose a specific field of study or precisely define their future profession or are interested in studying primarily in English so the programme is mainly intended for them. It is a programme whose settings correspond to the programmes taught at foreign universities. By attaining basic knowledge of law and management within the three-year study, the prospective graduate is prepared for a professional career. Upon completion of the bachelor's degree, students can decide whether they want to continue their studies in law or management, in Slovak or English. It is a meaningful bachelor's programme that can help young people consciously choose their specialization in a master's degree and attain professional knowledge in a foreign language. “, said doc. JUDr. Lívia Trellová, PhD., Vice-Dean for International Relations and Foreign Language Studies.
As to the method of teaching, she added “As part of the implemented education reform, the study at our faculty does not focus on memorizing the knowledge contained in the books (what we already consider as obsolete), but our goal is to educate future lawyers, experts in their field in a practical way, namely in the form of clinical legal education (students use their knowledge to solve a specific case, provide specific legal assistance), participation in internships, study visits abroad, professional scientific activity or participation in international simulated litigation, in which our faculty regularly takes part and ranks in the top positions.“

Comenius University in Bratislava, Faculty of Law is constantly striving to improve its quality, in order to prepare graduates who are successful in practice and will go a long way.

University sports come to life after the pandemic: the Slovak Winter Universiade begins

Bratislava, 8 February 2022: On this day, the opening ceremony of the 2022 Slovak Winter...

Traditionally, the Universiade is the most significant sporting event for university students. It is held every two years, has a summer and a winter section and is organised by one of our universities. The event is held in cooperation with the Slovak Association of University Sports and the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic.
"I am very pleased that this ‘strangeʼ time, when sports arenas remained empty, is slowly coming to an end and the venues are filling up," said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček during the opening ceremony. This year’s Winter Universiade brings particular joy after last year’s World Winter Universiade had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.
Comenius University is the main organizer of this year's Winter Universiade, and it took over the baton of Slovak university sports from the University of Žilina, which organized the 2020 Summer Universiade. A CU student, Marián Badár recited the oath which binds all athletes to compete in the spirit of fair play.
The ceremony was also attended by the Chairman of the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee Anton Siekel, the Government Plenipotentiary for Youth and Sport Karol Kučera and the President of the Slovak University Sports Association Július Dubovský. Collectively, they emphasized the importance of promoting sports at universities. Jozef Masarik, Comenius University Vice-Rector, is the chairman of the organizing committee.
The Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček said that the time has come to step up the promotion of sport in Slovakia and give it at least as much support as university athletes enjoy in other civilized countries. "I hope that this event will draw the attention of decision-makers to the conditions of university sport in Slovakia, because it is unjustly neglected," he added.
Although the opening ceremony was held today, some disciplines have already taken place earlier. Cross-country skiing took place on 22 and 23 January, biathlon took place on 29 and 30 January. On Monday, 7 February, students competed in headis, table tennis and badminton. Most competitions will be held this week, until 10 February. The closing ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, 10 February, 3 p.m., at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Comenius University. The last discipline will be downhill skiing, which takes place on 20 February at the Šachtičky ski resort near Banská Bystrica.

University adopts its own gender equality plan. Discrimination will not be tolerated

Bratislava, 3 February 2022: The largest Slovak university supports gender equality. On 24 January...

The university will not tolerate any disrespectful or unequal treatment of human beings. Ever since its establishment it has been promoting key values of human existence: truth, kindness and justice. By adopting the Gender Equality Plan the University strives to initiate changes which will lead to an open, supportive and non-discriminating environment for all employees and students.
The objectives of the gender plan should be achieved between 2022 - 2024. With the help of the document, the oldest Slovak university strives to achieve the following:

reconcile work and family life;

achieve gender balance in management and in decision-making;

achieve gender equality in staff recruitment and career development;

integrate the gender dimension in research and teaching content;

introduce measures for combating gender-based violence, including sexual harassment.

The plan demands the formation of working conditions and career development rules that eliminate gender inequalities in employment and management positions. Through cultural and symbolic change, it seeks to eliminate stereotypes and prejudices, to promote the values of equality and inclusiveness, and to create a supportive work environment. Between 2020 and 2023, the Faculty of Arts works on an E4E project entitled "Gender Equality Standards for AHMSSBL Institutions Through Europe - Equal4Europe", which will help the entire University to identify and deploy such tools that support the integration of gender in education and research, reduce gender imbalance in decision-making bodies and remove the remaining obstacles to career growth of women.
It is also important to ensure that women achieve a higher representation in management positions. Furthermore, no degree or form of sexual harassment is tolerated and the university environment must be non-discriminatory, safe and open. Steps are also being taken to raise the profile of female researchers and to strengthen the involvement of the academic community in promoting gender equality and diversity. The implementation and compliance with the measures is the remit of the relevant organizational units of Faculties and the Rectorate of Comenius University.

Scientists Discover a Perfectly Preserved Lizard from the Mesozoic

Bratislava, 2 February 2022: It lived 45 million years before the famous Tyrannosaurus rex, but it...

The lizard trapped in amber was named Retinosaurus hkamtiensis. It is a juvenile specimen consisting of a head and the anterior portion of the trunk, including the pectoral girdle and forelimbs. The length of its skull is only about one centimeter, so the lizard was relatively small, but amber finds usually contain such small specimens. Tree resin is a natural trap for many organisms which are preserved in it when it hardens.
"I will never forget the moment back in December 2019 in Bangkok, when I looked into the microscope and saw a lizard that was so perfectly preserved in amber that it looked like it died just a few days ago. This was not a common sight, even for an experienced paleontologist, " Andrej Čerňanský from Comenius University describes the origins of
.
The specimen has a uniquely preserved, three-dimensional skeleton. Compared to other specimens found in Myanmar amber, this one has complete and amazingly intact skin. Individual scales and their shape are discernible both on the head and on the body. The left side even preserves the eye and eyelid. Surprisingly, inside the specimen scientists found the trachea and partial bronchi. The discovery offers a unique opportunity to see the real appearance of a reptile which crawled on Earth 110 million years ago. This specimen is interesting because it has perfectly preserved soft tissues, while in most other cases little more than the skeleton remains.
Since its discovery, the fossil has travelled the world. First, it was brought from Asia to Texas in the U.S., where it was scanned using CT. It was then flown to Australia, where researchers analyzed it with a very powerful variant of computed tomography - the synchrotron. This method allowed them to study every little detail of the prehistoric lizard. It was eventually brought to Switzerland, where it was placed in a museum.
Phylogenetic analysis of molecular data placed the Retinosaurus reptile as a relative of the Tepexisaurus and Xantusiidae lineages. This points to an interesting hypothesis, that the present group known exclusively from North and Central America may have originated elsewhere than indicated by their hitherto known biogeography. The reason could be an early split in lizard lineages during the Early Cretaceous which would have occured, in this case, somewhere in Gondwana (the Southern continents and India). The Burma Terrane microplate (today's Myanmar) was probably not part of Asia at the time when our lizard lived. Back then, the area may have been an island which separated from Australia and travelled northwest.
"The topic is still quite controversial and leaves room for other interpretations of the origin of animal lineages occurring during the Cretaceous in this area," explains evolutionary biologist and palaeontologist Andrej Čerňanský from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. The scientist has long been studying vertebrates trapped in Myanmar's amber, which appears to still hide many secrets.
