Researcher helps uncover origin of one of the most popular pet lizards in the world

Bratislava, 16 February 2022: It is one of the most frequently kept pet lizards in the world, but...

Lizards of the genus Eublepharis and especially the Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) have been studied as a model organism for more than 50 years. By studying them researchers are able to answer various questions relating to reptiles in general, such as how to determine gender using ambient temperature or how their physical regeneration works. But what do we know about wild populations? As is often the case with model organisms, very little.
The Leopard Gecko first appeared as a pet in the 1960s, when it was probably imported from the city of Karachi in Pakistan. "Given its popularity among pet owners, it seems unbelievable that the relationship between the captive and the natural populations of this iconic lizard has been unclear so far. For example, it was unknown whether this species represented a single evolutionary lineage in nature or whether its genetic diversity was greater," says Daniel Jablonski from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. Exact data from Pakistan, the main territory which could help solve these issues, has been scarce so far.
In January, the journal
published a study by an international team of researchers from India, Pakistan and the U.S., whose member was also our zoologist Daniel Jablonski. In his research he focused on reptiles and amphibians specifically from Pakistan and was able to obtain key comparative material during several trips and in collaboration with the Pakistan Museum of Natural Sciences. His work enables us to obtain fresh understand the evolution and the origin of this gecko.
The data show that the evolution of the gecko ancestor can be traced back 50 million years when it split from other genera. New data also reveal that there may be more species than previously thought. The three evolutionary lineages which have now been discovered to live in the area between southern Afghanistan and northern India had not previously been described by scientists. The area around the Indus River and between the Hindu Kush Mountains and the Himalayas in Pakistan probably played a crucial role in the evolution of these very popular pet lizards.
"By researching the genetics of several dozen pet Leopard geckos which we compared to wild populations, we have been able to prove that they have identical or very similar genetic information. They come from one evolutionary lineage representing the model species E. macularius. In the wild it occurs in southern and central Pakistan. This shows that the pet gecko lineages mainly come from the area around the Indus River," concludes the Comenius University researcher.

As formulated in the resolution of the Academic Senate of Comenius University, the leave is intended to create an opportunity at the Faculties to discuss the current situation and the reasons which lead Comenius University to reject the proposed amendment of the Higher Education Act.
The Rector of Comenius University also calls on the self-government of Faculties to use this time to engage the students in a discussion about the future of university education in general, and the proposed amendment to the Higher Education Act in particular.

Year of election: Academic Senate to determine date of rector's election

Bratislava, 14 February 2022: Three years ago, the current management of the university convened...

The Rector of Comenius University is elected by sixty-six senators. Each of the thirteen faculties is represented by five senators, three of whom are staff members, two are representatives of students and one represents other organizational units. For the last two decades the election was usually approved at the last Academic Senate assembly in the month of July and took place in November of the same year.
This year, however, the election process will be disrupted by an amendment of the Higher Education Act, which goes to parliament vote in March. Once approved, the new law will enter into force on 1 April 2022. The wording of the act submitted to the parliament for approval would require the university to announce the election nine months ahead, making it impossible to maintain the traditional schedule.
"The presidency of the Academic Senate of Comenius University will propose to its senators not to wait until July and to announce the election of the Rector before the new law enters into force instead. In this way we will avoid the uncertainty of the new act and prevent a situation in which we would have no properly elected rector by January 2023. This procedure also reflects our conviction that the election of the rector is one of the fundamental rights of self-government of modern universities enshrined in the Magna Charta Universitatum. From the very beginning, we have consistently rejected the notion that the university’s management should be determined by nominees whose only qualification is a Bachelor degree and political backing," said Zlatica Plašienková, President of the CU Academic Senate.
The presidency of the Academic Senate plans to announce an extraordinary senate assembly in the coming days in order to set the date of the election. "At the moment, our academic community is intensively discussing the best date for the election. Some members of the community are of the opinion that we should wait for the law to be passed and refrain from provoking tension. I personally reject such subservience to the powers that be. However, the final decision is to be taken by a majority vote. I hope that the dilemma will be resolved so that candidates have enough time to prepare their presentations, and so we can use our last chance to elect a rector without the intervention of the politicians. It will be essential for our university to comply with all the provisions of the law and the Rules of Procedure, and to have a duly elected rector assume his duties in the management of the university by 1 February 2023," added President Plašienková.
The university will hold public hearings of the candidates to ensure an open and transparent procedure.

Seminar of Theoretical Physics - RNDr. Filip Blaschke, Ph.D. (17.2.2022)

Abstract:
We present a family of extended Abelian-Higgs models where either (gauged) lumps or vortices exist in different corners of the parameter space. In these models, it is possible to continuously go from vortex-type scenario with spontaneous symmetry breakdown to a lump-type scenario, where solitons are textures. It is exactly on the border between the different phases where we found a novel integrable case in which every solution is known in a closed form. We interpret these solutions as condensation of vortices that saturates the Bradlow limit.

Seminar of Theoretical Physics - Ondřej Nicolas Karpíšek (15.2.2022)

Tuesday 15.2.2022 at 14:00 online

Mgr. Ondřej Nicolas Karpíšek (Silesian University in Opava):
Kinks and oscillons in mechanized models of scalar field theory

Abstract:
We propose a systematic way of exploring phenomena of scalar field theories in (1+1)-dimensions, namely kinks, oscillons and their various scattering and decay states. We call this procedure a ‘mechanization’ – the field is replaced by fixed number of joints connected by straight edges. The mechanization is a sequence of general purpose collective coordinate models that approaches the continous field theory as the number of joints goes to infinity. We illustrate the dynamics of ‘mech-kinks’ and ‘mech-oscillons’ and draw a connection between the life-time of oscillons and the bouncing phenomenon in scattering of kink and anti-kink.
