The Senate also announced that the candidates for the position of Rector can be proposed until noon, 4 May 2022. The Academic Senate will convene on 18 May 2022, at 9:00 am, to elect the new Rector. All members of the academic community of Comenius University and members of the Board of Trustees of Comenius University may nominate candidates. Candidate nominations should be addressed to the chairman of the election commission, Mgr. Gašpar Fronc at: Mgr. [Translate to English:] Po zvážení aktuálnych problémov sa UK rozhodla zrealizovať tieto kroky s cieľom pomôcť svojim študentom a zamestnancom zvládať dôsledky aktuálnej situácie: Mimoriadne štipendium. Keďže vojnová situácia niektorých ľudí úplne odrezala od finančných zdrojov, v najbližšej dobe oslovíme všetkých ukrajinských študentov s možnosťou požiadať o mimoriadne štipendium. 1. Odpustenie ceny za ubytovanie. Všetkým ukrajinským študentom odpustí Univerzita Komenského poplatky za ubytovanie v našich internátoch, od teraz až do konca letného semestra. 2. Možnosť dočasného ubytovania pre rodinných príslušníkov. Ak niektorí z našich študentov a zamestnancov potrebujú ubytovať svojich najbližších rodinných príbuzných, vyčleníme kapacity na ubytovanie v našich ubytovacích zariadeniach. 3. Psychologická poradňa. Študentom a zamestnancom odporúčame služby našej Psychologickej poradne UK: https://uniba.sk/sluzby/psychologicka-poradna/. V prípade potreby posilníme kapacity, aby sme pomohli vyrovnať sa s traumatickými skúsenosťami a úzkosťou v súvislosti s aktuálnou situáciou. 4. Zohľadnenie zhoršenej možnosti účasti študentov na výučbe. Prednášajúcich žiadame, aby študentom a študentkám z Ukrajiny poskytli súčinnosť v snahe pomôcť im pokračovať v štúdiu, aj keď majú problém s fyzickou či online účasťou. Žiadame ich, aby našli najústretovejšie možné riešenie ich ďalšieho štúdia, a aby im vyšli v ústrety. Zároveň sme zriadili jednotný kontaktný bod pre ukrajinských študentov a zamestnancov, ktorí potrebujú podporu – ale aj pre tých, ktorí by chceli pomôcť, napríklad majú voľné ubytovacie kapacity či ponúkajú inú formu pomoci. E-mailová adresa tohto kontaktného bodu je ukrajina@uniba.sk. Rektor UK a vedenie univerzity myslí na všetkých, ktorým táto situácia skomplikovala život. Ponuka, samozrejme, platí pre všetkých študentov a zamestnancov, ktorých vojnový konflikt dostal do náročnej životnej situácie bez ohľadu na národnosť. Urobíme všetko pre to, aby sme pomohli minimalizovať následky. Ak by sa vyskytli akéhokoľvek ďalšie životné situácie spôsobené týmto konfliktom, prosím kontaktujte nás.

Election of Rector Will Take Place in May

During the discussion which lasted more than two hours several arguments were made for and against the spring election date. In the debate the Academic Senate allowed guest speakers to address the assembly. Several members of the Senate presented arguments in support of the elections taking place in May, creating an opportunity to hold the last free election of the Rector under the current version of the Higher Education Act. Vice-President of CU’s Academic Senate Matej Gajdoš also spoke in the debate, drawing attention to the frequently-made statement that students support the amendment of the Higher Education Act, saying: "This is not true. The vast majority of student representatives in the Senate of the University as well as the senates of the faculties, support the activities organized by the University to protest the amendment of the Higher Education Act." The CU Academic Senate assembly was public and was broadcast live on YouTube and at the university's Facebook page. The election of the Rector for the term starting on 1 February 2023 and ending on 31 January 2027 will take place on 18 May 2022 at 9:00 a.m. in Comenius University’s Auditorium. The deadline for nominating candidates is 4 May 2022, i.e. in 70 days.

Tweaking the Cartesian product of two cycles
Abstract:
Let G be a graph admitting a perfect matching. A pairing of a graph G is a perfect matching of the complete graph on the same vertex set of G, and a graph is said to have the Pairing-Hamiltonian property if for every pairing of G there exists a perfect matching of G such that their union gives a Hamiltonian cycle. After having characterised which 3-regular graphs have the Pairing-Hamiltonian property, in [Discrete Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. 17(1) (2015)], Alahmadi et al. suggest trying to tackle this characterisation problem for 4-regular graphs by looking at the Cartesian product of cycles CpCq. We show that the only such graph admitting the Pairing-Hamiltonian property is C4C4, that is, the 4-dimensional hypercube. However, by slightly replacing some adjacencies in CpCq one can obtain what we define accordion graphs, which are 4-regular graphs on two parameters, n and k, denoted by A[n, k]. For every n ≥ 4, A[n, 2] has the Pairing-Hamiltonian property and empirical evidence suggests that, apart from A[n, 2], there are (possibly an infinite number of) other accordion graphs having such a property or similar ones. Furthermore, once the accordion graph A[n, 2] is drawn, one can immediately notice that it is a circulant graph. In [Discrete Appl. Math. 194 (2015)], Bogdanowicz gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a 4-regular circulant graph to be isomorphic to the Cartesian product of two cycles. In a similar way, we determine which accordion graphs are circulant, and also give all the possible values a 4-regular circulant graph can admit for it to be isomorphic to an accordion graph. The above problems are joint work with John B. Gauci from L-Universit`a ta’ Malta.

Researcher helps uncover origin of one of the most popular pet lizards in the world

Lizards of the genus Eublepharis and especially the Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) have been studied as a model organism for more than 50 years. By studying them researchers are able to answer various questions relating to reptiles in general, such as how to determine gender using ambient temperature or how their physical regeneration works. But what do we know about wild populations? As is often the case with model organisms, very little. The Leopard Gecko first appeared as a pet in the 1960s, when it was probably imported from the city of Karachi in Pakistan. "Given its popularity among pet owners, it seems unbelievable that the relationship between the captive and the natural populations of this iconic lizard has been unclear so far. For example, it was unknown whether this species represented a single evolutionary lineage in nature or whether its genetic diversity was greater," says Daniel Jablonski from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. Exact data from Pakistan, the main territory which could help solve these issues, has been scarce so far. In January, the journal Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution published a study by an international team of researchers from India, Pakistan and the U.S., whose member was also our zoologist Daniel Jablonski. In his research he focused on reptiles and amphibians specifically from Pakistan and was able to obtain key comparative material during several trips and in collaboration with the Pakistan Museum of Natural Sciences. His work enables us to obtain fresh understand the evolution and the origin of this gecko. The data show that the evolution of the gecko ancestor can be traced back 50 million years when it split from other genera. New data also reveal that there may be more species than previously thought. The three evolutionary lineages which have now been discovered to live in the area between southern Afghanistan and northern India had not previously been described by scientists. The area around the Indus River and between the Hindu Kush Mountains and the Himalayas in Pakistan probably played a crucial role in the evolution of these very popular pet lizards. "By researching the genetics of several dozen pet Leopard geckos which we compared to wild populations, we have been able to prove that they have identical or very similar genetic information. They come from one evolutionary lineage representing the model species E. macularius. In the wild it occurs in southern and central Pakistan. This shows that the pet gecko lineages mainly come from the area around the Indus River," concludes the Comenius University researcher.
