Message from Rector and Student Section of Senate to students from Ukraine and Russia

The Rector and the leadership of the Student Section of the Academic Senate of Comenius University...

Immediately after the military conflict broke out on 24 February 2022, the Rector of Comenius University addressed the following letter to the Ukrainian students of our university:
Dear students,
allow me to express my deepest sympathy and solidarity with you at this time which is so difficult for your homeland. We are on your side and as your university we want to assist you by concrete measures rather than just gestures and declarations. I would like to inform you that I have taken immediate steps towards identifying specific problem areas and drafting effective solutions. I am convening the first crisis meeting today at 2 p.m. and we will keep you continuously informed of the measures we adopt.
We will welcome any help and active participation from you. Please, let us know how your university can assist you. We will appreciate your participation in determining what assistance we should provide to yourselves, your relatives and your entire country facing this difficult situation.
Let me assure you that our university will leverage its entire reputation and social status to stand up for you and help you.
Yours respectfully, Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University

The Rector of Comenius University also addressed the following message to the students from the Russian Federation in order to assure them that we were also prepared to assist them:
Dear students,
I address you, because I am aware of the complexity of the situation in which you now find yourself as students from Russia. I want to offer my full assurance that your university and me personally understand your difficult situation, which arose through no fault of yours.
The worst about any military conflict is the suffering of the innocent, often on several sides. For many of you, life has become more difficult. You may be facing traumatising confrontations and perceive negative reactions to the policies of your country's political leaders. Please do not hesitate to contact your faculties or the Rector's Office directly if the situation becomes too difficult for you and you need assistance. This could range from the provision of the essentials of living, the need for psychological counselling, administrative assistance in complicated daily interactions, or any other kind of support.
I wish you all a lot of strength and determination in these difficult times and would like to express the belief that the tension will de-escalate soon.
Yours respectfully, Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University

The Rector also expressed his approval with the letter of the Student Vice-Presidents of the Academic Senate of Comenius University who call on the students to show mutual empathy and humanity:
Dear colleagues,
our country and our university find themselves in direct proximity to a military conflict not seen in Europe since World War II. After months of pandemic, our resolve to uphold human dignity will be tested again.
Comenius University Bratislava has already formulated its response to the events unfolding in Ukraine and is doing its utmost to help university students and staff affected by the conflict.
.
During wars, the worst human qualities always come to the surface. Let us make sure we do not insert this conflict into our academic environment, because nothing good would come of it. The most important thing today is for us, students, to stick together and lend a helping hand to each other. It doesn't matter where we come from or what language we speak, because we are united by our studies at Comenius University Bratislava. It has always been a beacon of humanity, and has stood firmly on the side of truth and freedom at every turning point in history.
I call on all of you to ask your colleagues and friends how they feel and whether they need help. The war in Ukraine may not affect you directly, but it may have some indirect impact on your life nevertheless. You can be assured that Comenius University Bratislava and your student representatives in the academic senates of faculties and of the university are here for you. Do not hesitate to contact us and follow communication channels of your faculty and the university.
I call on you to help students from Ukraine, but in the same way I ask you to refrain from expressing negative attitudes towards students from the Russian Federation. Even we, Slovaks, do not always agree with the decisions of our political leaders. The days, weeks and months to come will be difficult for us all. None of us can be blamed for the military aggression, but we all will face the consequences of the ensuing humanitarian crisis. We need to stick together, even though it won’t be easy.
Respectfully,
Matej Gajdoš, Vice-President of the Academic Senate of Comenius University,
mobile: 0911 808 414,
e-mail: gajdos96@uniba.sk

The Rector of Comenius University and the leadership of the Student Section of the Academic Senate of Comenius University reiterate their determination to help our students from Ukraine, the Russian Federation and any other countries, for whom life has become difficult.

a
електронна пошта: filip.vincent@flaw.uniba.sk

Jan Hermann: Developing new methods for electronic-structure calculations (10.3.2022)

Thursday 10.3.2022 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/272

Dr. Jan Hermann (Junior group leader, Freie Universität Berlin a Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data):
Developing new methods for electronic-structure calculations

Abstract:
I will talk about two novel methods for electronic-structure calculations. The first is a deep-learning approach to quantum Monte Carlo, which provides highly accurate ground-state electronic wave functions and energies, and offers an alternative to the large and inefficient expansions in Slater determinants used in high-accuracy quantum chemistry. The second is a semi-empirical density-functional model of van der Waals interactions in molecules and materials that unifies many-body atomic approaches and nonlocal density functionals to offer a general, efficient, and accurate method.

Comenius university helps Ukraine. Week 1: What have we accomplished

Bratislava, 3 March 2022: From the first day of the military invasion of Ukraine, Comenius...

The University also comments on the war itself. "Comenius University Bratislava suspends all cooperation with its partner institutions from Russia. One such example is our cooperation with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna: we are stopping all exchanges of staff or students. The university will stop seconding and receiving any faculty or students under contracts which we have with partner institutions in Russia," said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.
Comenius University has immediately set up a contact email address, available to those students and faculty who may need help (
). Students most frequently inquire about the possibility of accommodating their relatives. The university reserved about 300 beds for this purpose. One of such cases was a student who needed to find accommodation for her nine-year old brother, because their parents stayed back in Kiev. Increasing numbers of Slovak students are offering help in the form of accommodation, language interpretation or medical care. University staff provide guidance to those who apply for extraordinary scholarships and psychological, spiritual or legal assistance.
From the first day of the conflict, the services of the
are available to and used by the students in need of such assistance. The Evangelical Theological Faculty of Comenius University offers spiritual counselling. The Centre of Legal Advice of the Faculty of Law where students of law will offer legal assistance, is expected to be up and running soon.
Several collections are open at the University - you can donate at the Druzba and Mlyny dormitories, and also at individual faculties. Brothers Samuel Furka and Daniel Furka from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University cooperate with the Military and Hospital Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem to collect material donations for refugees. The collection is open until Thursday. Items like durable foodstuffs, disinfectants and hygiene products, bandages, first aid kits and other necessities are welcome. This humanitarian aid will be transported to Ukraine on Friday, 4 March.
The Bratislava Association of Medics, whose members are students of medicine, organizes
of blood for Ukraine.
Students of translation and interpreting of European languages are doing their share by translating news from Ukraine with the help of their teachers. Veronika Goldiňáková, who graduated from the Department of Russian Studies and Eastern European Studies at Comenius University, compiled a freely available handbook of elementary Ukrainian, including basic phrases and vocabulary. It will help the people providing assistance to Ukrainians in their communication.
Students of Russian studies at Comenius University expressed their opposition to the Russian aggression: "We, the Students of Russian Studies, in the name of the humanist values which underlie the best that Russian literature and culture gave the world, reject the military aggression of the Russian Federation, the expressions of chauvinism and barbaric violence accompanied by the denial of the existence of the Ukrainian nation and language." They also expressed their respect to the citizens of Russia and Belarus who also oppose the war and the inhumanity. They are working on a petition which might be joined by students of Russian Studies from other universities.
The Rector's College is scheduled to meet on Monday to review the measures taken by the University so far and plan the next steps. In any case, the University is firm in its resolution to do its utmost to help deal with this humanitarian crisis and its consequences.

“Our international students have joined in the humanitarian aid effort and have donated money and essential supplies for those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine,” said the vice-dean of the faculty Martin Janík. “Organising themselves via social media and through their study groups, the students even involved their family and friends from abroad.”
A staggering amount of money – collectively almost €7,000 – was spent on buying vital items for women and children currently staying at the Slovakian holding centres near the Ukrainian border.
“I was amazed to hear that our international student community got involved in this important and worthy cause,” Janík added. “I would like to thank all and every one of them for their contributions and for their generosity.”
