Seminar of Graph Theory - Jozef Rajník (21.4.2022)

Thursday 21.4.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Jozef Rajnik:
On d-dimensional nowhere-zero r-flows on a graph
Abstract:
A d-dimensional nowhere-zero r-flow on a graph G, an (r,d)-NZF for short, is a flow where the value on each edge is an element of R^d whose norm lies in the interval [1,r-1]. Such a notion is a natural generalization of the well-known concept of circular nowhere-zero r-flow (i.e. d = 1). In this paper, we mainly consider the parameter \phi_d(G), which is the minimum of the real numbers r such that G admits an (r,d)-NZF. For every bridgeless graph G. The 5-flow Conjecture claims that \phi_1(G) <= 5, while a conjecture by Kamal Jain suggests that \phi_d(G)=1, for all d >= 3. Here, we address the problem of finding a possible upper-bound in the case d = 2. We show that, for all bridgeless graphs, \phi_2(G) <= 1 + \sqrt{5} and that the oriented 5-Cycle Double Cover Conjecture implies \phi_2(G) <= \Phi^2, where \Phi is the Golden Ratio. Moreover, we discuss some connections between this problem and some other well-known conjectures. Finally, we focus our attention on the cubic case: we propose a geometric method to describe an (r,2)-NZF of a cubic graph in a compact way, and we apply it in some instances.

University Reopens the Oldest University Club in Slovakia

Bratislava, 19 April 2022: Today marks the reopening of UniK, a culture and entertainment centre at...

The original student club closed when the rental contract of the previous operator expired. The university then polled its students and found out that 39% of them wanted the club to survive while 35% were in favour of having a community space. The university decided to combine the two functions in a new concept.
A transparent selection procedure was announced in July 2020 to find a new tenant. The competition was won by Janud, the company which also operates the popular KC Dunaj centre in downtown Bratislava. The renovated space in Mlynská dolina sports a fresh, post-industrial design, combining modern concrete elements with oak and exposed structural beams of reinforced concrete. New windows connect the bar with an atrium and will allow access to a future outdoor seating area.
"The new multifunctional cultural and entertainment centre intends to link sub-culture with pop-culture, and entertainment with education. Our goal is for the club to provide a pleasant backdrop throughout the whole day, from your morning coffee to your evening beer," Ivan Pätoprstý from Janud explains the club's concept. UniK Mlyny will offer refreshments, but also host culture, art, entertainment, education, live music, movie nights, travel lectures and stand-up comedy. One of the first events, scheduled for the end of April, is the popular Comenius University TedX.
The Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček is one of those who are happy to see an entertainment and culture centre return to Mlynská dolina. "The pandemic dealt a hard blow to the largest Slovak university campus. Now I can gradually start focussing on my promise to improve the quality of services in Mlynská dolina. The campus should be more than just a dormitory, it should be a place where the student community can thrive and where young people will be happy to stay over the weekends. I am very pleased that we found a partner who can meet the student's expectations regarding both entertainment and community activities, and that in a transparent competition and in cooperation with student representatives we chose a reputable company with prior experience both in gastronomy and in culture,” he adds.
In the initial phase, UniK Mlyny will open the bar and a ‘day section’. Later, it plans to open a ballroom.
Nuclear Seminar - Lucia Keszeghová (20.4.2022)

Wednesday 20.4.2022 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Mgr. Lucia Keszeghová:
Associated production of the top-quark pair and Z boson in proton-proton collisions at the ATLAS experiment

Abstract:
Associated production of the top-quark pair and Z boson (ttZ) is a rare process predicted by the Standard Model. Comparisons of the measured ttZ cross section values with the theoretical prediction test the accuracy of the Standard Model. Measurements of ttZ cross section are possible thanks to unprecedented energies and luminosities reached in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. So far, all the measured values of ttZ cross section are consistent with the Standard Model prediction at given centre-of-mass energy. The latest analysis published by the ATLAS experiment in August 2021 measured the inclusive ttZ cross section at 13 TeV to be 0.99 ± 0.05(stat) ± 0.08(syst) pb. This result is based on the full LHC Run II dataset with integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. In the analysis trilepton and tetralepton ttZ decays channels were considered. Measured ttZ cross section is consistent with the Standard Model prediction of 0.86+0.07−0.08(scale)±0.03(PDF+αS) pb. More precise experimental value is vital for more accurate confrontation with the Standard Model prediction. To achieve higher precision in the ttZ cross section measurement, the full ATLAS Run II dataset is being reanalysed with the inclusion of dilepton decay channel and the use of enhanced analysis methods. The preliminary results confirm that the use of neural networks for separation of signal and background events improves the measurement precision. The seminar will be mostly focused on the refined analysis in the tetralepton channel.

Abstract:
In this talk, the discharging method will be introduced and explained, using some classical and not so classical examples of its applications in the proofs of results mostly concerning planar graphs and other sparse graph classes.
Thanks to (temporary?) loosening of restrictions regarding the COVID epidemy, we intend to conduct the seminar meetings this semester `in-person'. Hence, all of you who might choose to attend in person are welcome. Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via MS Teams. In either case, we hope to see as many of you as possible (either in person or virtually) at our Friday gatherings.
