TEDxUniverzitaKomenskéhoLive

Bratislava, 28 April 2022: A unique TED event, TEDxUniverzitaKomenskéhoLive, introduces ten...

These days, recovery is mentioned often. We recover the landscape, our customs, relationships. We also often mention ‘crisis’ in the same sentence. We used to refer to the coronavirus, but now it’s the war in Ukraine, the climate or energy. When should we attempt to recover the old and when is it better to make a radical change and rebuild from the ground up? Are we going to use this recovery to modify the toxic habits of humanity? Is the "new normal" going to be more sustainable than the one before 2020?
Speakers at TEDxUniverzitaKomenskéhoLive will ask these questions. Juraj Tekel is a physicist from Comenius University and will speak about why renewable sources of energy are introduced so slowly. We have been hearing about them for years, but we still burn gas to heat our homes, put petrol in our cars and generate most of our electricity from non-renewable sources. What's the deal?
Lucia Mokrá, who is the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, argues that truth is always revealed with time. She speaks about her way of setting up processes at the faculty, about the challenges and obstacles. She says that time will reveal the truth about universities, the quality of higher education, student brain-drain and the importance of social sciences.
Will elves save social networks? Content on social networks is spiralling out of control. Now, however, trolls are taken on by elves - the moderators. Gabriel Tóth from the digital agency ‘Katedra Komunikácie’ (”Department of Communication”) studied political science at Comenius University and in his talk he will try to explore whether it is possible to win this fight.
Paranoid beliefs are relatively common in the general population and may not just be a manifestation of serious mental disorders. These beliefs have a significant impact on our day-to-day relationships. Psychologist and psychiatrist Michal Hajdúk from Comenius University talks about their root causes.
Co-founder of KC Dunaj, creator of the concept of the Shenk family craft brewery and of ‘Výčap u Ernőho’ (“Ernő’s Bar”) and, most recently, creator of the new multi-purpose culture and entertainment centre UniK Mlyny Ivan Pätoprstý has ample experience with recovery and restoration. Is it better to demolish and rebuild or restore and renovate? In his talk he explains why he tends to lean toward restoration.
Fragile and ardent, turning into wild and rough, with a dark premonition. Katarína Máliková is a composer, producer, musician and singer. Her style combines neo-classical, minimal synth-pop with elements of experimental music, glamrock, and 70's and 80's retro music. Her contribution at the event is musical.
TEDxUniverzitaKomenskéhoLive participants will have a unique opportunity to watch talks recorded during TED2022, which took place between 11 and 13 April, 2022. The speakers include Bill Gates, Adam Mosseri, Catherine Price a Garry Kasparov.
"Two years of a downsized social life have shown how much we all need to share ideas live. We could not attend lectures, events, conferences. TED and TEDx events are meetings of people who are ready to share interesting ideas. I’m pleased that we managed renew the tradition after the pandemic and that we are bringing the third year of this event to our university," said Radomír Masaryk, TEDxUniverzitaKomenského Team Leader and Comenius University Vice-Rector for External Relations.
"The videos of TED and TEDx talks are a popular supplementary content at university lectures and seminars because they have the potential to provoke and stimulate critical thinking. The events themselves foster an atmosphere of curiosity, exchange of ideas and of intellectual stimulation. They form experiences which the participants remember for a long time. And I believe that this is the essence of a modern university: we should be a source of such intellectual experiences," adds Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University, who was one of the speakers at the 2019 TEDxUniverzitaKomenského with a talk entitled "Everything you need to know about the Civil Code but you did not even think to ask“.
***
TEDxUniverzitaKomenského was made possible by the students of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Comenius University. They organized the first event in 2018. In 2019, they followed up on the success of the project and created an unforgettable event filled with inspiring talks. This year, the organization of the event was taken over by the External Relations Office of the Rectorate, which decided to give the event a new lease of life after the pandemic.
Comenius University Supports YOUNG RESEARCHERS

Bratislava, 27 April 2022: This year, Comenius University Bratislava continues its long-standing...

The university received 430 grant applications and decided to support 222 of them with an average amount of 980 euros per project. As before, most grant applications came from PhD researchers from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics and the Faculty of Medicine.
One of the selected projects studies the preparedness of physics teachers to meet the current goals of physics education. Silvia Novotná from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics plans to design an improved method of teaching physics in Slovakia. She will use observation of and interviews with teachers to develop their typology and design a specific way of teaching for each category. Her research should help inform the preparation of future physics teachers.
Another grant recipient, Lukáš Kurinec from the Faculty of Management, studies how general practitioners manage patients and their health care expenses. "In this project, we are examining the impact of redundant referrals by GPs to specialists on healthcare costs," explains Kurinec. The project will propose a system of bonuses for GPs tied to how well they approach this issue.
Kristína Mocsári from the Faculty of Education is testing a new, foreign therapy for pre-school and younger school-age children who stutter. In her project, she plans to test the therapy for six months. By comparing the results of entry, mid-point and final tests she plans to see whether the therapy helps reduce stuttering in children. "If the new therapy proves successful, it could help speech therapists across Slovakia," says Kristína Mocsári.
Karin Černickaja from the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences proposed a project to collect and analyse the life-stories of adults with learning disabilities or attention disorders. These stories are intended to serve future psychologists or other assisting and teaching professions. They will form a tool for mitigating stigmatization, raising awareness about this issue and also provide a source of inspiration for people with learning disabilities or attention disorders and for the general public.
One of the potential markers of the severity of a COVID-19 case is the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase. Its physiological function has not yet been sufficiently researched. It is present in large amounts in our bloodstream and in most organs and is involved, among other things, in the metabolism of fats and the onset of obesity or cardiovascular diseases. Since the latter are risk factors increasing the severity of a COVID-19 infection, Lucia Markusková from the Faculty of Pharmacy wants to see if using this enzyme helps more easily identify the patients with a risk of a severe course of COVID-19 in order to improve the efficiency of their treatment.
"The diversity of our PhD’s research projects mimics the university's broad scientific focus. Comenius University grants are meant to support the research that our students will use in their dissertations. I am pleased that we are able to continue this tradition and that this support meets with great interest every year," says Comenius University Rector Marek Števček.

MARIA-VICTORIA SCHISTAD: WE HOPE TO GO HOME ONCE THE WAR IS OVER

Her hometown was bombed. In recent days and weeks, Kyiv has been going through hell. Her male...

The Congress Centre in Modra – Harmónia is situated in a scenic and laid-back area of the Little Carpathians mountain range, only 25 km (15.5 mi) from both Bratislava and Trnava. Now it became a temporary home to a number of refugees from Ukraine. Maria-Victoria is one of them.
She and her mother fled to Slovakia, but her father and uncle couldn’t. At the moment, no one in her family is serving in the armed forces of Ukraine, but her cousin Konstantin helps the army as a civilian. She knows many people who also fled the country and ended up in cities all around Europe. Most of her friends and relatives, however, remained in Ukraine – staying in towns which are safer than Kyiv, like Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil or Uzhhorod. She and her mom are the only ones who left Ukraine.
„My two grandmothers stayed in Kyiv, as did other members of my family. My two grandmothers are very old, one of them can't even stand up anymore. My cousin Anastasia and aunt Anna are taking care of them and don't want to leave," she explains. At the time of our interview, she and her mother had only been in Slovakia for thirteen days. What does it feel like to be suddenly in a foreign country? „It is hard. You leave the country where you spent your life, where you have work, family and friends, and it ́s so hard to go somewhere else and end up in a place where you suddenly don ́t have anything. I am here, my family is in Kyiv, and it is so scary that I cannot see them. We text each morning and they tell me that they are ok. We support each other and we know that everyone is fine."
A Future Journalist?
Her difficult fate notwithstanding, Maria-Victoria remains incredibly positive and always has a smile on her face. Her plan is to study at Comenius University. She can study in English but she also wants to learn Slovak. „I want to stay here and attend the university, so I will try and learn the language. My mum is trying to find a job in Slovakia, but she speaks neither English, nor Slovak. We don ́t know how long the war in our country will last, but we hope to go home once the war is over."
Maria-Victoria wants to study journalism and work as a PR manager or just work in communication or advertising in general. Her dream job is to work for a PR agency. She is fluent in Russian and English in addition to her native Ukrainian. „In Ukraine I attended the National Aviation University in Kyiv and studied journalism and PR communication in the first year. I don ́t know whatʼs going on there now," continues Maria-Victoria.
Humble despite the hardship
Although her life is extremely difficult at the moment, Maria Victoria tries to stay positive despite the hardship. She still hopes that everything will be fine and that she can return home to reunite with her family when the war ends. During our conversation, she smiles constantly. Smile never leaves her lips, even as my own eyes well with tears.
When I ask her how we can help the Ukrainians affected by the war, she answers humbly: „I think that right now I have everything I need. Your support matters a lot. We just need to know that you are here for us. In Bratislava, I saw many Ukrainian flags and banners with 'Glory to Ukraine' written on them. I have already made friends in Modra, it ́s great to laugh with them and talk about our situation. This is also a form of help and I think you are doing a lot," concludes Maria-Victoria.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Pavol Jánoš (28.4.2022)

Thursday 28.4.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Pavol Jánoš (STU Bratislava):
On near-cages from lifts of dipoles

Abstrakt:
The problem of finding $(k,g)$-cages, that is, finding the smallest (in terms of the number of vertices) $k$-regular graphs of girth $g$ is largely open. One of the approaches of finding small graphs with given properties are lifting constructions. In this talk we examine our constructions of small $k$-regular graphs of girth 6 and 8, obtained by lifting dipoles and achieving the order of existing graphs of the corresponding girth. We also discuss another construction based on groups, called $G$-graphs, and show under which circumstances the $G$-graphs can be obtained as lifts of dipoles.

The Best University in the SCImago Ranking

In this year’s SCImago Ranking, Comenius University was ranked as the best university in Slovakia....

The Slovak Academy of Sciences ranks first
, while ranking 511st overall. It is followed by Comenius University Bratislava which placed 573rd overall. Universities are institutions which perform teaching in addition to research.
The universities which reached the top quartile (25%) of the ranking all published their research in the most influential scientific journals, including Comenius University.
The SCImago ranking
4364 universities according to three sets of indicators, based on research performance (50%), innovation outputs (30%) and societal impact measured by their web visibility (20%). The current edition of the ranking measures the indicators for the period of 2016-2020.
The Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is unique in that it does not focus only on university-type organizations, but also includes other relevant scientific and research institutes. The SIR uses the SCOPUS abstract and citation database, which means that it gives a better representation to humanities than, for example, the Shanghai ranking. The aim of the project was not to create a ranking like THE, QS or ARWU, but to serve as a basis for comparing entities in the fields of research activity, innovation and visibility on the Internet.

The Faculty of Education Unveils its Renovated Premises

The building in Šoltésova street will gain six new teaching rooms and seven new offices for teachers in an attic conversion and a new extension. The new space will include two kitchenettes and toilets. The renovation took longer than planned because the building is located in the listed area of the Old Town, and because of the pandemic. Construction was completed in 2020 but the building only obtained its permit for use on 29 September 2021. At the moment, the building is already used for teaching.
The Faculty of Education also boasts a newly renovated entry area in its Račianska Street building. The entrance was modified in accordance with an overall strategy of Comenius University to make all its premises barrier-free. There is now an access ramp and a new sidewalk, the entrance door was replaced, the entry terrace repaired, interior decoration refreshed and a rest area created. The work was completed in February 2021 and the permit for use was obtained in the past October. The approval process was delayed by the need to obtain a permit to remove a thuja growing in a built-in pot, which was replaced by two new trees. The city council had to give its approval to plant the trees on its land because the faculty had no suitable property itself.
