Response of Comenius University concerning accreditations

Bratislava, 5 May 2022: Comenius University Bratislava is responding to the press conference of the...

Comenius University gives its assurance to all its students that they would have already received notifications of any accredited study programmes which had to be discontinued, along with information about possible alternatives.
Up to 200 study programmes will have been discontinued by 31 August, 2022. Most of them had no students enrolled. The number might be inflated by the fact that some programmes were offered as full-time, part-time, Slovak and English versions, and would consequently enter the list as four separate discontinued programmes.
Some of the programmes which will no longer be available include Romanian language and culture or French language and culture in combinations. There is, however, a new programme of Romanesque Study including several minor programmes which used to be offered separately. Similarly, the discontinued Swedish Language and Culture programme will be subsumed in Germanic Studies, which will also include Swedish or Dutch. The study programmes of tectonics and sedimentology will be replaced by a single, newly-accredited programme of Tectonics and Sedimentology. The discontinued programmes of Archival Science, Museology and Cultural Heritage will be replaced by a single programme Archival Science, Museology and Digitization of Historical Heritage.
Only a handful of programmes were discontinued without replacement. These include, for example, Finnish language and culture in combinations or Polish language and culture, which have long been attracting diminishing numbers of students. Students affected by these changes were informed already in 2020 and were offered a suitable replacement study programme or combination.
Those students who will not be able to graduate from a programme which has lost its accreditation, will be offered an advance opportunity to transfer to another study programme. The University has reached out to all students who would be affected by these changes.
Comenius University has obtained accreditation for 57 new study programmes, although many of them are just replacing existing discontinued programmes.
In case of any questions, students are encouraged to contact the study advisors at their departments and institutes.

Abstract:
A report on the recent progress in the construction of the Baikal Gigaton Volume Detector, which is data taking already, will be presented. The effective volume of the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope for neutrino initiated cascades of relativistic particles with energy above 100 TeV has been increased up to ~0.5 km3. This presentation reviews the design and the basic characteristics of the largest operating neutrino telescope in the Northern Hemisphere. Some preliminary results of the partially completed detector will be presented.

Thanks to (temporary?) loosening of restrictions regarding the COVID epidemy, we intend to conduct the seminar meetings this semester `in-person'. Hence, all of you who might choose to attend in person are welcome. Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via MS Teams.
Future Students and Tourists - Information Centre Welcomes All

Bratislava, 4 May 2022: Comenius University Bratislava opened a new information and event centre....

The information centre is intended to be the first point of contact for those who are interested in studying at the university. It will also host various events, trainings, lectures, exhibitions, seminars or art events. Gifts and promotional items of the university will be available for purchase and visitors will be able to obtain information about the study and the university.
The centre was created as part of CU’s effort to engage with the public more openly and to communicate with current and potential students more effectively. It also aims to increase the involvement of the professional public in the life of the university.
The university transformed what used to be a commercial property into an accessible space. It includes an entrance zone, where visitors can obtain information about studying at the university. The rest of the centre consists of an area which will serve as a cafe during the day and can be converted to an event space as needed.
"The interior was designed to show that the space is intended for young people while at the same time remaining respectable enough to represent the university," says architect Dušan Kočlík from the Slovak University of Technology (STU). In designing the interior of the centre, Comenius University cooperated with STU, its closest partner in academia.
The project is a part of the project Centrum Comeniana which received funding from the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic. Renovation of the premises took place between August 2021 and January 2022. The space is fully wheelchair accessible.
"The university does not just consist of lecture halls, teacher offices and libraries. It strives to be a living part of its city. It needs to communicate with its students and prospective students, as well as with the public, both the professional and the lay. Our new information centre is an attempt to step outside of the standard layout of our activities and create a barrier-free space in the historic centre of Bratislava, offering timeless interior design and the functions of a contact point and a meeting place. I believe that the events, lectures, readings, concerts and discussions held here will help us engage more effectively with people who are interested in study, and involve the general public in the life of the university," said Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University Bratislava.

Seminar of Department of Experimental Physics - Martin Žemlička (13.5.2022)

Friday 13.5.2022 at 14:00 Lecture room F2/272

Martin Žemlička (IST Austria):
Compact vacuum gap transmons - selective and sensitive probes for superconductor surface losses

Abstract:
The large capacitor of state-of-the-art transmon qubits systematically lowers the coupling to parasitic losses localized in material interfaces, but it also lowers the achievable integration density of quantum processors, and increases unwanted radiation losses, cross-couplings and leakage. We fabricate and characterize transmons with a footprint area as low as 36 x 39 μm2 and show that the interaction with the lossy dielectric interfaces is rapidly decreased by using very narrow (≥ 100 nm) capacitor vacuum gaps. We utilize commercial silicon-on-insulator wafers, where the sidewalls of suspended silicon beams are metalized by angle evaporation such that up to 99.6% of the electric field energy is distributed in vacuum and the effective dielectric constant is close to unity. Measuring the internal quality factor of lumped element resonators and the energy relaxation time of qubits hence allows to precisely probe the superconductor surface loss properties and isolate a single loss channel – two level defects in the aluminum surface oxide exposed to ambient conditions. This offers new means to systematically improve coherence times by testing appropriate superconducting materials and surface treatments.
