Seminar of Department of Experimental Physics - Denis Kochan (9.6.2022)

Thursday 9.6.2022 at 14:00 Lecture room C

Denis Kochan (University of Regensburg & Institute of Physics, SAS Bratislava):
Anisotropic vortex squeezing in Rashba superconductors: a manifestation of Lifshitz invariants
Abstract:
Most 2D superconductors are of type II, i.e., they are penetrated by quantized vortices when exposed to out-of-plane magnetic fields. In a presence of a supercurrent, a Lorentz-like force acts on the vortices, leading to drift and dissipation. The current-induced vortex motion is impeded by pinning at defects. Usually, the pinning strength decreases upon any type of pair-breaking interaction that perturbs a system.
In the talk, I will discuss surprising experimental evidence showing an unexpected enhancement of pinning in synthetic Rashba 2D superconductors when applying an in-plane magnetic field. When rotating the in-plane component of the field with respect to the driving current, the vortex inductance turns out to be highly anisotropic. We explain this phenomenon as a direct manifestation of the Lifshitz invariant that is allowed in the Ginzburg-Landau free energy by symmetry when space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. As demonstrated in our experiment [arXiv:2201.02512], elliptic squeezing of vortices---an inherent property of the non-centrosymmetric superconducting condensate--- provides access to fundamentally new property of Rashba superconductors, and offers an entirely novel approach to vortex manipulation.
The talk is intended to be pedagogical and as pedestrian, as it can be. I will in introduce and motivate concepts of the Lifshitz invariants, the superconducting diode effect, and, generally, a notion of the non-centrosymmetric superconductivity.

Nuclear Seminar - Adam Broniš (1.6.2022)

Wednesday 1.6.2022 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/111

Mgr. Adam Broniš:
Electron capture decay in the transfermium region – studies of 253No, 254No and 254Md

Abstract:
All so far synthesized heavy or super-heavy nuclei are neutron deficient due to the mechanism of their production - fusion-evaporation reactions. Two decay modes - β+ or electron capture (EC) decay are available where the latter is usually favored due to its larger Q value. With its Q values ranging up to several MeV, the EC decay can provide crucial information on the Nilsson configurations and energies of the states populated in the daughter nuclei, which cannot be accessed otherwise (e.g., via α decay). The excitation energies of multi-quasiparticle states can be used to estimate the influence of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. However, until now, the study of EC decay in the transfermium region was represented by only a few cases - 253Md, 257Rf, 258Db, 255Md, and 256Md.
The first part of the talk will be dedicated to the previous results of the EC decay investigations in the transfermium region and the method for the production of heavy isotopes. In addition, the experimental setup and the detection technique based on the registration of the coincidences between characteristic X rays and conversion electrons (CE) will be introduced. In the second part of the talk, the results of the 253No, 254No, and 254Md EC decay study will be presented. These results were based on the data sets obtained in the four experiments performed at the velocity filter SHIP in GSI Darmstadt. The tentative decay schemes of the high-energy excited states in 253Md, 254Md, and 254Fm populated via EC decay will be proposed. In addition, their tentative Nilsson configurations based on the theoretical predictions will be discussed. Interestingly, an intense feeding of the high-energy states in 254Fm via EC decay of 254Md was observed, in contrast with the predicted population of the low-spin and low-energy states.

Seminars of Department of Theoretical Physics - Peter Čišovský, Vladimír Kráľovič (31.5.2022)

Peter Čišovský:
Cosmological perturbations in universe with dark energy
31.5.2022 at 14:00 hod., Lecture room F2/125

Abstract:
Dark energy with pressure to energy density ratio $w=-1$, or close to $-1$, is an essential component of our universe, but its nature is still a matter of research. When cosmological perturbations are studied, perturbations of all components in the universe must be considered. However, it turns out that if the dark energy is described as a perfect fluid, then perturbations in it cannot be formed. Dark energy perturbations are then usually omitted. A prominent exception is cosmological inflation in which expansion of the universe is driven by matter with pressure to energy density ratio w not equal to but close to $-1$. Violation of the condition $w=-1$ is needed to avoid eternal inflation, and also leads to perturbations of the matter driving it. The goal is to study cosmological perturbations in models slightly different from the model with ideal fluid with $w=-1$, such as model with shear stress, or models combining simpler ones.

31.5.2022 at 14:30, Lecture room F2/125

Abstract:
Infrared divergences appear in quantum theories involving massless particles and complicate evaluation of the reaction rates. Therefore, it is crucial to somehow remove these divergences from our calculations. In this thesis we explore how we can use the S-matrix unitarity constraints for the cancelation of infrared divergences. Then we will use this approach to evaluate some reaction rates for the type-I seesaw model. This model involves only one type of massive particles at the relevant energetic scale (the right-handed Majorana neutrinos) and all standard model particles are considered massless.

CONVECTION IN MUSHY LAYERS

A study on fluid flow and phase change dynamics in multicomponent systems has been published in the...

The formation of sea ice in the polar oceans and the development of defects in metal casts may seem like two unrelated processes, but they have one important feature in common: the occurrence of a so-called mushy layer. Mushy layers host complex dynamics of fluid flow, thermal and chemical transport, phase transformations, nonlinear dynamics and pattern formation. The consequences can be significant, ranging from degradation of industrially cast turbine blades for aerospace and energy industries to global climate change.
Mushy layers are multiphase porous mixtures of dendritic solids and solute-rich interstitial fluid, which arise during the solidification of multicomponent alloys. In a paper entitled “Mushy-layer convection”, we present the results of mathematical modelling of the phase change and fluid flow in the mushy layers arising during the solidification of binary and ternary alloys. The mushy layer equations are derived by applying the general principles of continuum mechanics to control volumes containing representative samples of both phases. The model consistently describes the interactions between solidification and convection in mushy layers: fluid flow causes the advective transport of heat and solutes, which in turn affects the local solidification rate.
Convection in mushy layers can be localized and form narrow solid-free channels, or chimneys, which are oriented parallel to the growth direction. This process was directly observed in recent computer simulations of sea-ice evolution using an advanced numerical scheme based on the enthalpy method. In materials engineering, these channels are associated with structural defects in the resulting alloy (ingot).
This work was supported by the Slovak Research and Development Agency under the contract No. APVV-18-0308.

The agenda on Tuesday, 24 May, offers high school students a lot of variety from the very morning. Participants will learn how the law sometimes helps to spread misinformation, or how music affects us. They can learn about the largest organ in the human body - the muscle - and gain an insight into the development of an effective and safe medicine. Or they can choose any of a number of other interesting lectures.
On 31 May, the second day of the event, they can discover how study is possible even with a learning disability. They can learn how to use the addition of exponents in actual life and find out whether we should fear mutations. They can also look forward to interesting trivia from the field of surgery.
"We are happy to open the academia even to those high school students who are still some years away from having to decide about their future education. I am pleased that after two years online we will meet them again in person in our Auditorium. I also hope that the lecture day will awaken a fascination in them and that we will soon see them back as students of bachelor studies," said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.

Comenius University (CU) earns 178th place in the worldwide RUR ranking in the area of teaching, making it into the TOP 500

Bratislava, 20 May 2022: In the 2022 Round University Ranking Comenius University Bratislava was...

For the first time in the history of the ranking, another Slovak university, the University of Žilina, appears on the list apart from CU, placing 658th. Of the Czech universities, only Charles University in Prague (254th place) overtook Comenius University. This year, no Polish universities made it into the ranking. The list is led by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), which has overtaken Harvard University for the first time in the history of the ranking.
Comenius University achieved its best ranking in the “teaching” dimension, earning the 178th place, which puts it in the “golden league”. This parameter evaluates the proportion of students and teachers, the number of bachelor's degrees or doctorates awarded per teacher and the overall reputation of the school.
The ranking is based on 20 indicators, which form 4 key areas of evaluation: teaching (40%), research (40%), international diversity (10%) and financial sustainability (10%). The ranking is published in partnership with Clarivate Analytics and draws from institutional information and bibliometric data from the Web of Science.
In the current, thirteenth edition, 1150 universities from 85 countries were evaluated. The final version of the ranking included 1024 universities from 76 countries. The ranking is dominated by Europe with 394 universities, followed by 384 schools from Asia, 166 from North America, 35 from Oceania, 25 from Africa and 20 from Latin America.
Comenius University is the only Slovak university to regularly appear in all major rankings. It currently ranks 630th in the CWUR. In the Shanghai ranking (ARWU), CU ranks 801st-900th, while in physics it ranks 301st-400th worldwide. It ranks 587th in the prestigious Best Global Universities ranking, while placing 244th in physics, 371st in geosciences and 485th in biology. In SCImago it ranks 573rd, and in QS World University Rankings it placed in the 651st-700th place band. In the NTU Ranking (National Taiwan University Rankings) it ranks 701st - 750th, but in the subject of physics it ranks 275th worldwide. In the Three University Missions (MosIUR) Ranking, it ranks 272nd, while THE Impact Rankings ranks it 601st - 800th and THE European Teaching Rankings ranks it 126th - 150th. THE WUR ranking places CU in the 1001st-1200th place band.
