Pavol Prokop is Scientist of the Year

The most outstanding people of Slovak science received awards at the Scientist of the Year event....

Scientist of the Year Professor PaedDr. Pavol Prokop, DrSc., From the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University Bratislava received the award for clarifying how reproductive strategies and evolutionary aspects of behavioral strategies are involved in avoiding pathogen contamination. He has published more than 170 research papers which are available in the Web of Science (WoS) and Nature Index databases. In 2020 and 2021 his publishing activity generated 961 SCI references.
"I greatly value this prestigious award which shows appreciation for the work of Slovak researchers. The vast majority of scientists will never receive it, which makes it particularly valuable to me. At the same time, I am pleased that this award acknowledges the field of behavioral ecology, which does not have a long research history in Slovakia," said Scientist of the Year.
Pavol Prokop is a pioneer of behavioral ecology in Slovakia. He teaches at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University and works as a senior researcher at the Institute of Zoology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Professor Prokop focuses most of his research at the evolution of animal and human behavior. He concentrated on Darwin's application of the sexual selection theory to living systems, as well as on a number of basic human emotions, anthrozoology, and relationships between hosts and parasites. In intercultural research he teamed up with colleagues to study the effects of gender ratios and the stability of preferences applied in sexual selection. He also participated in research into behavioral strategies of hosts influenced by parasites and by sexual signaling.
The award of Young Researcher was presented to Dr. Lucia Balážová from the Slovak Academy of Sciences, while Professor Tomáš Brestovič from the Technical University in Košice became Innovator of the Year, and Professor Michal Hatala from the Technical University in Košice was named Technologist of the Year. Associate Professor Ladislav Hluchý from the Slovak Academy of Sciences was awarded the title "Notable personality of international cooperation".
The event is organized by the Center of Scientific and Technical Information of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Association of Slovak Scientific and Technical Societies. The purpose of the event is to raise the professional and social profile of the most notable personalities of science in Slovakia and promote outstanding results of research and science.

Scientists have observed an exceptional meteor shower

On 31 May 2022, an international team of scientists observed a meteor shower from the Tau Herculid...

Arizona was the place with the best observation geometry which is why the international team of scientists headed there to observe the phenomenon from a plane and the ground. Scientists from Australia, France, Germany and Slovakia participated in the observations. Our university was represented on the team by Juraj Tóth from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics. The shower was also observed by scientists elsewhere on our planet.
Simultaneous observations were made from ground stations at three pre-selected locations equipped with the mobile all-sky system, AMOS, or Automatic Meteor Orbit System, including spectral cameras operated by Tomáš Paulech of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics (AGO Modra, Slovakia) and Peter Vereš (Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, U.S.). Juraj Tóth coordinated both components in order to effectively combine the ground observations with observations made from an aircraft which flew over the site.
Scientists from the observatories in Banská Bystrica and Kysucké Nové Mesto also participated in the expedition with their own instruments and cooperated with the Vatican Observatory on Mt. Graham and the TAAA Association in Chiricaua, AZ.
The team of scientists now faces the time-consuming task of processing the records and analyzing the data.
The comet named "73P/Schwasschmann-Wachmann 3" was discovered in 1930. It disintegrated in 1995, and on 31 May of that year, its debris contacted the Earth's atmosphere. This is the first case in history when a meteor swarm from a disintegrated parent comet was successfully predicted and observed.

Tau Herculids meteor shower

Joint airborne and ground-based expedition to observe a remarkable Tau Herculids meteor shower by...

Several scientists have independently predicted that the Earth will encounter a stream of particles originating from a comet 73P/Schwasschmann-Wachmann 3 on the night of May 31, 2022. The Jupiter-family comet was discovered in Hamburg in 1930. In 1995 the comet disintegrated into multiple nuclei and the disruption was also observed from the Astronomical and Geophysical Observatory FMPI UK in Modra. Notably the particles from the disruption from 27 years ago could have created a predicted meteor storm on May 31, 2022.
Apparently the best geometry for ground based observation was expected to be around the Southwestern United States, therefore the Slovak expedition departed to Tucson in Arizona and split into ground-based and airborne observers.
The airborne observations from a jet plane were coordinated in a consortium with scientists from Australia, France, Germany and Slovakia (Juraj Tóth for the Slovak part of the expedition).
Simultaneous observations were made from ground from three distinct locations equipped with a portable all-sky detection systems AMOS, that included spectral cameras. AMOS on ground was operated by T. Paulech (AGO Modra) and P. Vereš (Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, USA). The ground-based and airborne observations were coordinated by J. Toth with the aim to observe the same volume of the space from ground and air, while the jet plane was flying above the ground where the ground-based observers monitored the skies.
Colleagues from public observatories from Banská Bystrica and Kysuckeé Nové Mesto also took a part in ground-based expedition with their own equipment (S.Kaniansky, J.Mäsiar, R.Barsa a J.Ambroz). The ground-based teams acknowledge the local support of professional and amateur astronomers and access to their facilities at Mt. Graham (Vatican Observatory) and the Chiricahua Astronomy Complex (Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association).
The prediction of the increased meteor activity was confirmed and has exceeded the conservative estimates. Increased meteor frequency was observed from the jet plane, ground stations, spectral cameras and several unusual light curves of meteors were captured. The data analysis from multiple instruments is expected to be time consuming. The observations have confirmed the dynamical models of mass leaving the comet’s nucleus and for the first time based on a prediction the meteor shower was observed from a recent dramatic disintegration of a parent comet. The observed data and their subsequent interpretation could help us to understand the composition and dynamical processed of these primordial bodies of the Solar System.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Dominik Rist (15.6.2022)

Wednesday 17.5.2022 at 14:00, Lecture room F2 125

Dominik Rist:
Non-Abelian Gerbes with Connections (with a two-bundle of string quartets)

Abstract:
Higher forms arise as gauge potentials in a number of contexts within physics. The prime example is the Kalb–Ramond B-field of string theory, which is found also in the low-energy supergravity limits. Mathematically, these gauge potentials are connections on higher or categorified principal bundles also known as gerbes. In the Abelian case, the theory of gerbes is well-established and used in many contexts. In this seminar, I will talk about how one can extend this theory to the non-Abelian setting. There, the situation is much more subtle. Although the topological construction of non-Abelian gerbes is relatively straightforward (one just lifts the cocycle relations for transition functions of an ordinary principal bundle to hold up to homotopies, which are then encoded in higher components of the cocycle), defining a connection on such a gerbe requires much more work. After formulating the general construction I will illustrate it by lifting the principal bundle corresponding to an instanton--anti-instanton pair to a string 2-group bundle. Such ``string structures'' are believed to play a role in the dynamics of M5-branes. This talk is based on our recent work arXiv:2203.00092.

When students choose their university, they look for quality: cost or distance do not put them off

Why students choose to study at Comenius University Bratislava? What are their sources of...

The number of applications received by Comenius University has recently been increasing. While in 2017 we received 12,331 applications for study in the bachelor and joint (first and second degree) programmes, this year the number has risen to 16,667.
In the 2020/2021 academic year our questionnaire was returned by 326 students. Most of them studied at the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Education. One year later, we received 188 responses from students, most of them from the same three faculties. Even though the sample may not be representative, the fact that the survey was undertaken repeatedly might at least provide an indication of a trend.
Students begin considering university even before high school
Surveys from both years indicate that most students start thinking about choosing a university even before they enrol in high school. The second most common answer was ‘3rd year of high school’. Their final decision is most frequently made in the final year of high school or just after graduating from it.
According to the survey, the first choice of the high school students who now study at Comenius University was a school in Slovakia. This was the response given by 93 % in 2020/2021, and by 83 % one year later. The rest were planning to study at universities in the Czech Republic and elsewhere abroad. Comenius University was also the first choice of the vast majority of our students. As many as 90 % are still satisfied with this decision.
When choosing a university, students paid the most attention to the quality of study programmes, the demands placed on students, the renown and tradition of the university, but also the ranking of the university in worldwide rankings. At the same time, students believed that Comenius University fared better in these parameters than other universities.
The least important aspects were the costs associated with the study, high demands during the admission procedure, distance of the university from home and sporting opportunities.
They most frequently obtain information on the web, at fairs and from acquaintances
When deciding about university, they value the opinion of their parents and friends alongside their own. Comenius University was recommended to them by friends, parents and acquaintances, based mostly on their own experience. Some students were also recommended other universities, mainly due to lower cost of study or proximity to their home.
Students learned about Comenius University mainly from the web, followed by other sources, like acquaintances and friends, and education fairs. When deciding about their study, students preferred visiting a website and communicating by e-mail over communication via social networks. Almost half of the students cannot compare how the communication of Comenius University compares to that of other universities. Of those who do have this experience, three quarters believe that CU’s communication is better.
The number of applications keeps growing
The university’s presence on the
portal also drew increased numbers of visitors. During the surveyed period of January 2021 to January 2022, the number of visitors
increased by 193%, and reached 63,098 unique visits. According to a survey ran by the vysokeskoly.sk portal, most applicants search for information on the web - up to 96%. Other sources of information include friends and acquaintances (55% of applicants), open doors events (49%), trade fairs (41%), the media (30%), and study counsellors and teachers (24%). More than 2,300 high school students participated in this survey, which makes the sample representative.
The results suggest that awareness about the possibilities of study at Comenius University can be improved through better web visibility of the university, consistent CU brand communication, increased number of events targeted at students such as the Open Doors Day or Try Being a University Student for a Day, as well as regular presence at education fairs. The increasing number of applications proves that Comenius University ticks most of these boxes.

The book Fukushima Accident: 10 Years After evaluates radioactivity impacts of the Fukushima accident with up-to-date information covering the terrestrial and marine environments and comparing them to the pre-accident situation. The aim is to provide current information and summarize 10 years of investigations on radionuclides released into the atmosphere and the ocean on the local, regional and global scales. The book discusses in detail releases from the damaged nuclear reactors, the transport of radionuclides in terrestrial and ocean environments, including atmospheric and ocean global circulation models. It summarizes the radionuclide contamination of the regional and global terrestrial and marine environments, and assesses future trends in radioactive contamination of the Fukushima site. Using both the experimentally derived radionuclide data and modeling results, the authors describe the distribution of radionuclides in the world atmosphere and oceans, and their impact on the total environment, including assessments of radiation doses in Japanese and world populations from the direct exposition to ionizing radiation and from consumption of terrestrial food and seafood during 10 years after the Fukushima accident.
