University Presents New Prices at Dormitories, Starting September

An academic year has just ended during which three major events hit us: the global COVID-19...

Energy costs at our dormitories increased by more than 40%. The university has no additional resources which could be used to compensate this additional cost. Consequently, we have no other choice but to increase prices for dormitory accommodation for students and staff as of the beginning of the next semester. The Academic Senate of Comenius University met to discuss the proposed price increase yesterday, 22 June, 2022.
Prices at CU Mlyny will increase from the original levels ranging between 47.50 and 113.50 euros to 58.50 and 134 euros per month. From September, a double room in High-Rise B will cost 87.50 euros per month instead of the current 74 euros.
Prices at CU Družba dormitory increased from the previous range of 72.53 to 97.33 euros, to between 88.68 and 119 euros per month. From September, a double room in Blocks D1 and D2 will cost 93.96 euros per month instead of 76.85 euros.

The price increase is only enough to cover the actual cost increases to the dormitories. The University operates its accommodation for students and staff as a social service rather than a for-profit activity. When determining prices, Comenius University makes sure that accommodation will remain affordable for students from socially disadvantaged families.

We are the highest-ranked Slovak university in the QS World University Ranking

Bratislava, 17 June 2022: Last week, QS World University Rankings published its 2023 ranking of the...

The best universities in the world are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Cambridge and Stanford University.
Five other universities from Slovakia made it into the ranking apart from
. Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice placed in the 701st - 750th band. The Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, the Technical University in Košice and the University of Žilina in Žilina were all ranked in the 801t - 1000th band. The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra occupied the 1201st - 1400th band.
The QS WUR ranking evaluates universities
with different weights: academic reputation (40%), faculty to student ratio (20%), Scopus citation per faculty ratio (20%), employer reputation (10%), international students ratio (5%) and international faculty ratio (5%).
When evaluated by subject, Comenius University achieved a respectable ranking in physics and astronomy - 401st to 450th place, in medicine it ranked 451-500th and in biological sciences it ranked 601st - 640th. Comenius University ranks 58th out of 400 universities in the QS EECS University Ranking of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
QS World University Rankings has been evaluating universities since 2004 in collaboration with analysts from Elsevier. This year, the ranking published a list of the 1,400 best institutions from nearly 100 countries around the world.
"We usually take rankings with a grain of salt because each is based on a different methodology and takes into account different factors. Nevertheless, I am pleased that we have managed to maintain a good position which borders on excellent in some study programs. This is a consequence of the huge commitment of researchers who are delivering world-class performance in spite of the constant budget cuts. It is also a reason why we implore the Slovak government to reconsider the continuing reduction of spending on our higher education. Funding is the only way to allow us to attract the best people, improve our performance, and rise in the rankings,“ thinks the Rector of Comenius University, Marek Števček.
Comenius University is the only Slovak university which regularly makes it into major rankings. In the Round University Ranking, it achieved the 426th position and ranked 178th in the education key dimension area. It currently ranks 630th in the CWUR rankings. In the Shanghai ranking (ARWU), CU ranks 801-900, while in physics it ranks 301st-400th worldwide. It ranks 587th in the prestigious Best Global Universities ranking, and in physics it ranks 244th. The SCImago ranking puts it in 573th place. In the NTU Ranking (National Taiwan University Rankings) it is ranked 701st - 750th, and in physics it ranks 275th worldwid. In The Three University Missions MosIUR ranking it ranks 272nd, THE Impact Rankings ranks it 601st - 800th. THE WUR ranking ranks CU in the 1001st-1200th band.

Autonomous Vehicles to Become a Reality, the Legislation is not There Yet

Bratislava, 16 June 2022: Cars equipped with technologies that steer, accelerate and brake instead...

Very little to no attention is being paid in Slovakia to the legal aspects of autonomous vehicle use. This, however, may change in the near future as vehicles driven by artificial intelligence become more commonplace.
"The introduction of autonomous vehicles cannot be studied separately from their technical aspects," clarifies Jozef Andraško from the Faculty of Law of Comenius University. That is the reason why lawyers joined forces with IT and mechanical engineering specialists from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, in one of the research projects.
As of now, the Slovak legislation still fails to give answers to a number of practical questions. For instance, is it still possible to speak of a ‘driver’ in the traditional sense? Will the ‘driver’ of an autonomous vehicle be required to hold a driver’s license? How to regulate access to the data generated by autonomous vehicles? Legal scientists have therefore studied the current regulation in administrative law, criminal law, cyber security and personal data protection.
Their goal is to write a White Paper on the regulation of autonomous vehicles in the European Union and the Slovak Republic, aiming to improve the future legislation governing the introduction of autonomous vehicles into practice. The paper could be useful for the Ministry of Transport and Construction of the Slovak Republic. "We cannot predict whether our analysis will actually be used by lawmakers, but our work will significantly expand the research into the legal aspects of autonomous vehicle introduction in Slovakia. It will also serve as the basis for future research in this area, " added Jozef Andraško, a lawyer from Comenius University.
"It's only a matter of time before autonomous vehicles become a regular part of road traffic. I am convinced that the research of our lawyers and other experts will contribute to the process of gradual introduction of autonomous vehicles in Slovakia," says the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.

Pavol Prokop is Scientist of the Year

The most outstanding people of Slovak science received awards at the Scientist of the Year event....

Scientist of the Year Professor PaedDr. Pavol Prokop, DrSc., From the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University Bratislava received the award for clarifying how reproductive strategies and evolutionary aspects of behavioral strategies are involved in avoiding pathogen contamination. He has published more than 170 research papers which are available in the Web of Science (WoS) and Nature Index databases. In 2020 and 2021 his publishing activity generated 961 SCI references.
"I greatly value this prestigious award which shows appreciation for the work of Slovak researchers. The vast majority of scientists will never receive it, which makes it particularly valuable to me. At the same time, I am pleased that this award acknowledges the field of behavioral ecology, which does not have a long research history in Slovakia," said Scientist of the Year.
Pavol Prokop is a pioneer of behavioral ecology in Slovakia. He teaches at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University and works as a senior researcher at the Institute of Zoology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Professor Prokop focuses most of his research at the evolution of animal and human behavior. He concentrated on Darwin's application of the sexual selection theory to living systems, as well as on a number of basic human emotions, anthrozoology, and relationships between hosts and parasites. In intercultural research he teamed up with colleagues to study the effects of gender ratios and the stability of preferences applied in sexual selection. He also participated in research into behavioral strategies of hosts influenced by parasites and by sexual signaling.
The award of Young Researcher was presented to Dr. Lucia Balážová from the Slovak Academy of Sciences, while Professor Tomáš Brestovič from the Technical University in Košice became Innovator of the Year, and Professor Michal Hatala from the Technical University in Košice was named Technologist of the Year. Associate Professor Ladislav Hluchý from the Slovak Academy of Sciences was awarded the title "Notable personality of international cooperation".
The event is organized by the Center of Scientific and Technical Information of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Association of Slovak Scientific and Technical Societies. The purpose of the event is to raise the professional and social profile of the most notable personalities of science in Slovakia and promote outstanding results of research and science.

Scientists have observed an exceptional meteor shower

On 31 May 2022, an international team of scientists observed a meteor shower from the Tau Herculid...

Arizona was the place with the best observation geometry which is why the international team of scientists headed there to observe the phenomenon from a plane and the ground. Scientists from Australia, France, Germany and Slovakia participated in the observations. Our university was represented on the team by Juraj Tóth from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics. The shower was also observed by scientists elsewhere on our planet.
Simultaneous observations were made from ground stations at three pre-selected locations equipped with the mobile all-sky system, AMOS, or Automatic Meteor Orbit System, including spectral cameras operated by Tomáš Paulech of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics (AGO Modra, Slovakia) and Peter Vereš (Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, U.S.). Juraj Tóth coordinated both components in order to effectively combine the ground observations with observations made from an aircraft which flew over the site.
Scientists from the observatories in Banská Bystrica and Kysucké Nové Mesto also participated in the expedition with their own instruments and cooperated with the Vatican Observatory on Mt. Graham and the TAAA Association in Chiricaua, AZ.
The team of scientists now faces the time-consuming task of processing the records and analyzing the data.
The comet named "73P/Schwasschmann-Wachmann 3" was discovered in 1930. It disintegrated in 1995, and on 31 May of that year, its debris contacted the Earth's atmosphere. This is the first case in history when a meteor swarm from a disintegrated parent comet was successfully predicted and observed.
