Falling Walls Lab Slovakia winners include a Cambridge University student and a student from Comenius University

Bratislava, 30 September 2022: Unusually, this year’s Slovak national round of the Falling Walls...

Bo Peng studies quantum computations performed by quantum vibration in crystals. Quantum technologies are a cutting-edge are. The problem is that the states of quantum systems are relatively fragile and are easily affected by the environment. Bo Peng discovered that in solids it is possible to manipulate the vibrational modes of a crystal. He found a way to generate quantum vibrations in crystals. "This theory could have enormous practical implications in computing," said member of the jury Professor Vladimír Bužek.
Comenius University student Monika Janíková investigates the use of erythrocytes in controlling infections. The nucleus which is lost by erythrocytes during puberty, can have antimicrobial effects useful for controlling microorganisms and infections similar to neutrophils, or specialized immune cells. "Our hypothesis is that since erythrocytes and neutrophils share a common ancestor, they might have similar properties," says Monika Janíková.
The jury decided to award two first places partly because no national round was held in Great Britain, and the two finalists of the Slovak round include both a representative of Slovakia and a student from a university in Great Britain. "We wanted to recognise quality, but at the same time we thought that the Slovak national round was held in order to give Slovak reserachers a chance to compare themselves to the rest of the world in Berlin," said the president of the competition, Professor Peter Moczo. "The breakthrough factor is an essential criterion which is met by both winners," he added.
The second place was won by Martin Muzelák who studies at the Technical University in Košice. He developed ways in which the MIDI technology, used mostly in the music industry, can also be applied in other disciplines, creating a universal digital tool for students, engineers and researchers.
Eva Rutšeková from Comenius University Bratislava entered a project which studies how historical experience is ignored and past mistakes repeated. She proposes for researchers in humanities and in social sciences to join forces and develop a curriculum of history combined with logic across all levels of education.
A jury of experts consisting of scientists from various disciplines reviewed all entries and chose the winners.
is a part of a worldwide format that gives recognition to exceptional projects of young innovators from various disciplines of science. On 7 November 2022, the winners of Falling Walls Lab Slovakia 2022 will represent Slovakia at the international Finale as "Emerging Talents", among 100 participants from the whole world. They will present their research, initiative or business model in front of a jury made up of scientists, innovators and business representatives. The winner will receive "The Breakthrough Winner" award, a financial prize and above all the opportunity to present their entry on the main stage of the prestigious Falling Walls Conference which takes place on 9 November 2022 in Berlin.
The Slovak finale was organised by Comenius University Bratislava in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service. Academic partners included the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovak University of Technology, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, Technical University in Košice, University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, University of Žilina and Technical University in Zvolen, Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.

Honorary doctorate for medical rehabilitation specialist Helmut Kern

Bratislava, 28 September 2022: Today, Comenius University Bratislava awarded an honorary doctorate...

Physical medicine and rehabilitation have long been Helmut Kern’s area of expertise, in which he carries out research and develops new methods of rehabilitation. In the field of rehabilitation, he applies progressive principles of sports training. He studied medicine and sports science at the University of Vienna. He has more than 7000 citations and an H-index of 44.
For patients with spinal cord damage, electrostimulation is the only effective means of preventing irreversible changes in the musculature of the lower limbs. Professor Kern defined the forms and dosage of electrostimulation, contributing to the knowledge of how electrostimulation works in these patients.
In cooperation with the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Comenius University, he developed several original diagnostic and training devices. Together they also designed and verified exercise programs for both healthy and weakened individuals. The activities of the team led by Professor Helmut Kern and Professor Dušan Hamar from Comenius University led to the establishment of the
, a unique facility which translates research into practice.
„I am proud of the many years of scientific cooperation and joint research in the field of sport sciences, physiotherapy and rehabilitation,“ said Professor Kern at the award ceremony about his cooperation with Professor Hamar's team from Comenius University.
Abstract:
An undirected graph $\Gamma$ with diameter $k$ is said to be goal-minimally $k$-diametric ($k$-GMD for short) if for every edge $uv$ of $\Gamma$ the distance $d_{\Gamma-uv}(x,y)>k$ if and only if $\{x,y\}=\{u,v\}$. It is rather difficult to construct such graphs with higher diameter $k$, especially for odd $k$. In the talk we recall the basic results on $k$-GMD graphs and we give an overview of the constructions that resulted in infinite families of $k$-GMD graphs as well as we mention some constructions of algebraic nature that leaded to discovery of $k$-GMD graphs with higher diameters.
Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via
. In either case, we hope to see as many of you as possible (either in person or virtually) at our Friday gatherings.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Robert Lukoťka (29.9.2022)

Thursday 29.9.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Robert Lukoťka:
r-Balanced flows on graphs

Abstract:
An r-balanced flow is an assignment b of values to the vertices of G, an orientation O, and an assignment \phi of values to the edges of G such that 1. b(v) = deg(v) (mod 2), for each vertex v, 2. 0 <= \phi(e) <= (r-2)/r, for each edge e, 3. \sum_{e \in O^+} \phi(e) - \sum_{e \in O^-} \phi(e) = b(v), for each vertex v.
We show that this concept coincides with the concept of balanced valuations introduced by Jaeger and thus it coincides with circular nowhere-zero r-flows. This definition gives a practical approach to compute the circular flow number for graphs on up to approximately $100$ vertices using the state of the art ILP solvers. We discuss how similar ideas could be used for the dual concept of circular colourings of certain graphs.

Honorary doctorate for Austrian professor Helmut Kern

28 September 2022 at 11 a.m., CU Auditorium

On 28 September 2022, Comenius University Bratislava will award the title of Doctor honoris causa to university professor Helmut Kern who was nominated for the accolade by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport. The award reflects his contribution to the development and practical application of innovative methods in the rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system, and for the cooperation with Comenius University.
Prof. Dr. med. Helmut Kern (71) was born in Austria. He studied medicine and sports science at the University of Vienna. Physical medicine and rehabilitation has long been his area of expertise in which he carries out research and develops new methods of rehabilitation. He has more than 7000 citations and an H-index of 44.
Since 2000, he has been cooperating with the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, mainly with Professor Dušan Hamar. These joint projects enabled Comenius University to develop new infrastructure and realize benefits in the research of exercise programs for the elderly.
Professor Kern discovered the potential of using diagnostic methods developed primarily for assessing the athletes’ level of conditioning, for medical rehabilitation. In rehabilitation, he applies progressive principles of sports training. The university also acknowledges his contribution to the study of mechanisms through which physical activity has beneficial effects at the molecular level, and of the mutual integration of medical rehabilitation and sports science.
The award ceremony will take place in CU’s Auditorium and interpretation will be provided from German into Slovak and into English.
