A STUDENT'S STORY: AN ENVIRONMENTALIST SEARCHES FOR ILLEGAL LANDFILLS

She is starting her third year of environmental studies at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. After...

Finally getting to know her classmates
After graduating from high school, she had no idea what to do with her future, and so she decided to travel the world. Two years later, she returned to Slovakia. At first, she considered applying to the University of Agriculture in Nitra, but at about that time she met a student of Environmental Studies from CU's Faculty of Natural Sciences, and decided to study here instead.
The faculty teaches a variety of subjects and students learn about living and non-living nature. For Tereza, the practical subjects are most attractive, because students go out into the field and apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. Organic and inorganic chemistry or invertebrates are subjects that most students find difficult. In the summer semester of the second year, environmental science students had easier subjects, but in the autumn semester of the third year, they will launch into ecotoxicology.
„Senior students report that ecotoxicology exams are very difficult, probably trying to scare us. There is a big cull by the end of the third year, and ecotoxicology is the subject flunked by a lot of people.“ Classes are now in-person, but when she enrolled into the first year, courses were held remotely. That is why she did not get to know her classmates very much, and only began to form those friendships now, nearly two years later. Terézia, of course, prefers in-person teaching. „I couldn't concentrate very well during online classes. During long lectures you could sometimes fall asleep in front of the computer screen. Many of her classmates missed the personal contact with their fellows,“ explains the student of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University.
During their studies, future environmentalists are also required to solve tasks in the actual world, with the support of their pedagogues. Biodiversity and pedology are two subjects which include many practical exercises. For example, vertebrate and invertebrate biodiversity classes were held in the Burda Mountains, in the district of Nové Zámky. „We observed different kinds of animals in real life about which we had learned in school. For example, we were catching and naming insects. We learned, among other things, in which environment these animals live and what they feed on,“ she describes the practical classes.
Research of invasive plants
This year, Terézia has to write and defend her bachelor's thesis. She will focus on invasive plants, i.e. those that are not native to our territory. In her thesis she will investigate the effects that the planting of the invasive black locust tree (Robinia pseudoacacia) has on selected functional properties of plants belonging to herbaceous synusia. Synusia involves a population of one or more species of the same plant life-form, living in one community. In the practical portion of her thesis, she will study ten sites in Slovakia, „twin plots“, where black locust grows. These sites are similar, and Terézia will compare an artificially planted black locust forest and a forest composed of native trees, with no black locust present. She will select one black locust plant at each site and take ten samples from it, creating herbariums. She will then study the samples in cooperation with the Botanical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The Botanical Institute is the only lab in Slovakia that has a portable laser leaf area meter which uses advanced laser technology and enables researchers to accurately and conveniently measure the surface area of leaves.
„Using this scanner, I will compare individual samples, in terms of the way they grow on the sample sites and how well they do on these sites. I study their vitality, length, weight and other parameters. Next, I will compare how individual plants prosper in the locust forest and in the native tree forest. There are studies showing that black locust attracts both native and invasive plant species into the forest,“ she describes the topic of her thesis.
A dangerous invasion
Invasive plants are dangerous. They displace our native plants. Animals and insects which depend on native species disappear with them. The result is a loss of diversity of plant species as some succumb to the competitive pressure of invasive species. Terézia wants to continue researching this issue in her final thesis. „I want to focus on how sites affected by invasive plants can be treated and how we can fight invasive plants. In my master's thesis, I would also like to investigate how we can replace invasive plants, and how we can strengthen the ecosystem so that native plants eventually crowd out invasive plants.“
She helps to protect nature
Next to her study, Terézia has already held several jobs related to her profession. Last year she worked for the State Nature Conservancy, and now she is applying the theoretical knowledge acquired during her study at the Slovak Environmental Inspection. She works in the ‘technical department’. „If the inspection wants to carry out its work, it needs to survey a location first, which is what I do. I work with a multifunctional GNS locator. It is a surveying tool which can pinpoint a specific location. The data it produces is entered into a special system where the locations are also identified on land registry maps. This surveying method is used when someone informs the Environmental Inspection of an illegal landfill or an illegal activity in a protected area. This method allows us to pinpoint the exact location,“ she explains her work.
In the free time she has left she likes to go for walks or hikes, read books or go rafting. Environmental science has both meaning and utility and Terézia thinks that the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University is the best school of its kind in Slovakia. „At our faculty there are many renowned experts who are also excellent teachers. If you like nature, environmental studies is a great opportunity for you. In addition, I can use what I have learned in everyday life, for example by being able to see the environment in a more holistic way. At the same time, Comenius University has very good international reputation, so one can find a job abroad too,“ she adds in conclusion.

Abstract:
Past archeological research showed that St. George’s Rotunda in Nitrianska Blatnica and Church of St. Margaret of Antioch in Kopčany could have their origin in 9th or 10th century AD and could therefore belong to the oldest still standing churches in Slovakia. An international consortium of radiocarbon laboratories was established to date the origin of these two buildings. Samples of wood, charcoal, mortar and plaster were analyzed. Results of radiocarbon dating of these two buildings will be presented.

We express our sorrow for the victims of the recent tragedies

Barely a week has passed since the tragic accident at the Zochová street bus stop in Bratislava's...

Matúš Horváth, a student at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University is one of the victims of the shooting which happened on 12 October 2022 on Zámocká Street in Bratislava. Sadly, according to available information, his murder was motivated by hatred. It is scary to see what hatred against people, who are guilty of just being different, can do. We must renounce hatred more resolutely. This cannot go on!
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Rector Marek Števček said: "I am horrified. Being different is not a sin, a crime or a reason for hate. Let's all stand up against the hatred aimed at anyone. Hate is the worst emotion, because it only begets resentment, anxiety and misery. Yet more lives were wasted pointlessly, and for the most incomprehensibly absurd of reasons. Yet more pain for our university after such a short time. These are dark times for our institution. Matúš, rest in peace. I express my deepest, most sincere condolences to the relatives and loved ones."
On behalf of the university, we express our sincere condolences to the bereaved. For those who want to join us, the book of condolences will be available for signing in the vestibule of CU's building at Šafárik Square.
Just one week ago, 2 October on Sunday evening, a tragic accident happened in Bratislava. A passenger car drove into a group of people who were waiting for public transport at the bus stop on Zochová street in Bratislava’s Old Town. The driver killed five people, four of whom were university students.
Arrogance and irresponsibility was the cause of a tremendous amount of pain. We express our sincere condolences to the relatives, loved ones, friends and classmates of the victims of the tragic accident on Zochová street, who included three students of our university - Marek Vojtaššák, a student at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport (FPES) and the Faculty of Arts, Broňa Božoňová, also a student at FPES and at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and Natália Hamráková, a student at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University.
We wish speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.
The
is available to the bereaved, friends and relatives of the victims.
Comenius University Rector Marek Števček sent letters of condolences to the victim’s families.
In response to Sunday's tragic event and as a sign of respect for its victims, all establishments in the Mlynská dolina dormitory campus have jointly decided to cancel all events planned for the evening of 4 October 2022.

Štefánia Glevitzká:
Vertex-transitive closures of graphs
Abstract:
A vertex-transitive closure of a graph G is a vertex-transitive supergraph of G on the same vertex set. The vertex-transitive number of G is the smallest possible degree of a vertex-transitive closure of G. In this talk, we introduce the concepts of vertex-transitive closure and vertex-transitive number of a graph. We estimate and in some cases also determine vertex-transitive numbers for graphs with relatively simple structure and we prove some general observations.

Mobile app helps people recover from substance abuse

What are digital interventions? They provide support to individuals in their everyday life....

How can “micro-randomized trials” be used to improve digital health interventions? „For example, a person who is recovering from drug use might follow regular counseling sessions. In addition, the person might be provided a mobile health application that provides helpful information/tips whenever, between sessions, the person might need such help. The app might include a locator which will help the person find the nearest Addicts Anonymous meeting in both time and space. The app might contain information/ideas for managing cravings covered in the counseling session that the person can refer to between sessions,“ Susan A. Murphy explains.
Health care outside the clinics
Digital intervention can also help those who either don’t have access to in-person care, or don’t want it. Digital intervention could use sensor data from one’s smartphone or wristband (step count, patterns of typing on the smartphone, location, proximity to where the person used to take/buy drugs and so on) to learn useful times to deliver suggestions to individuals or to connect the individual to a peer mentor. „In some cases the digital intervention might be used by the individual to track their behaviors/physiological state and then share the information with clinical staff. In summary, digital interventions are one way to extend care outside of a clinic setting,“ adds Susan Murphy.
Data science and health psychology
Data science can be very helpful in health psychology. According to Susan Murphy, it can be used to design experiments to collect information that health psychologists use to inform the construction of more effective digital, and other types of interventions. The micro-randomized trial method which she developed can also be used in constructing digital interventions. It randomizes each individual at each of the many times. At each of these times it may be more or less effective for a smart device to reach out to the individual and deliver behavioral treatment (e.g. ideas for managing cravings, motivational content, connection to others, information about where to obtain help, assistance in setting goals for the next day and so on).

Susan A. Murphy

is Professor of Statistics, Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute and Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Her research focuses on improving sequential, individualized, health-related decision-making; in particular, clinical trial design and data analysis to inform the development of just-in-time, adaptive digital health interventions. Her lab works on online learning algorithms for developing personalized mobile health interventions. She developed the micro-randomized trial method used in constructing digital health interventions. This trial design is in use across a broad range of health-related areas. She is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine, two of the three US National Academies. She was one of the keynote speakers at European Health Psychology Society conference in Bratislava.

„These trials provide data to ascertain which type of behavioral treatment is most effective at what time and in which settings. Further, the data from these trials can be used to investigate positive, as well as negative, delayed effects of the treatment (negative: burden or habituation; positive: forming healthy habits, increasing resilience),” says Susan A. Murphy.
Artificial intelligence method
In addition, Susan A. Murphy also uses an artificial intelligence method, "reinforcement learning", to personalize digital health interventions. Artificial intelligence algorithms, one of which is “reinforcement learning,” can be used to continually learn/revise which behavioral treatments are most effective for an individual at a given time. „The idea is that as the individual interacts with the digital intervention, the artificial intelligence algorithm will dynamically, using the accruing data on the individual, personalize the delivery of behavioral treatments to each individual. This may involve the use of predictions/detections of moments of high risk (e.g. high risk of substance use relapse) and moments at which the individual might be least burdened by the delivery of a behavioral treatment.“
Any negatives?
Of course, there are some negatives in the use of artificial intelligence. Susan Murphy states three examples. First, if the digital intervention involves the use of online artificial intelligence algorithms, then it is critical that these algorithms operate in a stable and reliable way so as to not discourage an individual who is struggling with managing a chronic disorder. Second, if behavioral health science and the AI algorithm are not carefully coordinated, less confident risk predictions might be incorrectly communicated to the individual. Third, an incorrect deployment of digital interventions may aggravate health disparities.
„For example suppose a digital intervention for helping people manage cardiovascular problems is only developed using input/data from middle-income Caucasian men. In this case, the intervention may be much less effective in other types of individuals. The behavioral suggestions may be inappropriate for individuals with different ethnic backgrounds or for individuals who have lower incomes and thus potentially strongly competing needs and goals,“ explains Professor Murphy
