University will not close after 17 November, but remains on protest alert

Bratislava, 26 October, 2022: A meeting of representatives of the academic community was held today...

In difficult times like these, Comenius University Bratislava is fully aware of its social responsibility. At the same time, it takes into consideration a pronounced change of the way in which the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic communicates, viewing this communication as constructive. After the demands formulated by the Slovak Rector's Conference on 13 September 2022 were partially satisfied, the representatives of CU’s academic community agreed that tuition would not be suspended on 17 November 2022. Comenius University, however, remains on protest alert. It resolutely demands that competent authorities, at the earliest possible opportunity, present a solution to the current situation which would be systemic, sustainable and predictable. At the moment, universities expend all their energy on ensuring basic survival and have no room to support any significant development.
CU’s academic community representatives agreed to give the Rector of Comenius University the mandate to continue negotiating with the government and with the representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport, aiming to meet the demands of public universities as outlined in the resolution of the Slovak Rector's Conference from September 2022.
Comenius University wants to stress that it never intended to turn its students into hostages. Nevertheless, and considering the current trend in the financing of universities, the insufficient compensation of increasing costs associated with high inflation, the rising prices of goods and services, and an absence a solution to the current situation, it cannot completely rule out that it might need to restrict its functioning partially or fully in the upcoming period.

Abtract:
The world of high-power computing (HPC) is changing drastically. In the past 30 years, we have seen the transition from single-core CPUs to modern multicore heterogenious architectures accelerated with specialized hardware for vector operations. And it keeps changing. These changes, however, affect how effectively can HPC codes based on different quantum theories scale up and utilize the available hardware resources. In this talk we will try to compare them, we will discuss modern trends in HPC, but mostly we will try to answer the question from the title, can Quantum Monte Carlo be the future standard for quantum computing?

Seminar of Graph Theory - Martin Škoviera (20.10.2022)

Thursday 20.10.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Martin Škoviera:
Decycling cubic graphs

Abstract:
Destroying all cycles of a graph by removing as few vertices as possible is an extensively studied problem in graph theory and computer science. The minimum number of vertices whose deletion eliminates all cycles of a graph is its decycling number. In this talk we deal with the problem of determining the decycling number of a cubic graph. We show that the problem is closely related to determining the largest genus of an orientable surface into which the graph can be cellularly embedded. Using this relationship we prove that every cyclically 4-connected cubic graph G has a minimum decycling set S such that G-S is connected (that is, a tree) and S itself is either independent or induces a subgraph with exactly one edge. This improves a classical result of Payan and Sakarovitch (1975).
We conjecture that such a decycling set exist in almost all cubic graphs.
This is a joint work with Roman Nedela and Michaela Seifrtova.

Ľubomír Tomáška is Outstanding Academic in Slovakia

The ESET Foundation has announced its fourth annual ESET Science Award, which recognizes exceptional individuals of science and the academia. The award ceremony took place on 14 October 2022 in the building of the Slovak Philharmonic. Professor Silvia Pastoreková from the Centre of Biomedicine of the Slovak Academy of Sciences was selected as the laureate of the main category, Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia. Miroslav Almáši from the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice was voted Exceptional Scientist in Slovakia Under the Age of 35. Ľubomír Tomáška from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University became this year's Outstanding Academic in Slovakia.
Together with Professor Jozef Nosek, he runs the lab of the Departments of Genetics and of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University, where his team of researchers and students identify the mechanisms of communication between individual parts of our cells. Their main goal is to discover how DNA molecules in chromosomes, in particular their end regions (telomeres), are protected against damage that would have fatal consequences for the cell. They also study how mitochondria, the energy centres of cells, communicate with other parts of the cell.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Marián Fecko (25.10.2022)

Tuesday 25.10.2022 at 14:00 hod., Lecture room M X

Marián Fecko:
Galilean and Carrollian invariant Hodge star operators

Abstract:
The Hodge star operator is naturally associated with metric tensor. It is therefore invariant, on Minkowski spacetime, with respect to Poincar\'e transformations and is routinely used to succinctly write down Poincar\'e invariant physics equations. In Galilean (Carrollian) spacetime, there is no Galilean (Carrollian) invariant metric tensor available. So the usual construction of Galilean (Carrollian) invariant Hodge stars does not work. It turns out, however, that there are useful analogs of the Hodge star operator. They may be used to write down Galilean (Carrollian) invariant physics equations. e.g. equations of Galilean (Carrollian) electrodynamics.
