Abstract:
Association schemes originally arose in statistics, but nowadays they are extensively used in algebra and combinatorics. In the talk, we will not deal with algebraical properties of association schemes; instead, we focus on their statistical motivation. Therefore, the basic theory of: estimation in linear regression, optimal designs, and in particular, block designs will be examined; ultimately arriving at the connection between association schemes and partially balanced incomplete block designs. We will try to formulate the statistical concepts and results so that they are understandable for non-statisticians.
Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via
.
Seminar of Graph Theory - Dávid Wilsch (3.11.2022)

Thursday 3.11.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Dávid Wilsch:
On McKay-Miller-Širáň graphs

Abstract:
The degree-diameter problem is to determine the largest number of vertices in a graph with a given degree and diameter. There is a restricted version of this problem which asks for the largest vertex transitive graph with prescribed parameters. McKay, Miller and Širáň used voltage graphs to construct a family of graphs of diameter 2, degree (3q-r)/2 and order 2*q^2, where q is a prime power congruent to r mod 4 and r is -1, 0 or 1. McKay-Miller-Širáň are vertex transitive for r=1 while for the other two values of r they are highly symmetric but not vertex transitive. Later Šiagiová found a simpler voltage graph construction for the vertex transitive McKay-Miller-Širáň graphs, using base graphs with just two vertices - dipoles. Also, Hafner described all three families geometrically by using incidence graphs of finite affine planes.
We present the results of Šiagiová and Hafner and use them to show that all McKay-Miller-Širáň graphs can be constructed as lifts of dipoles.

On Monday, October 24, 2022, the rector of the Comenius University, Professor Marek Števček, awarded the Gold Medal of Comenius University to Professor Nigel Mason for his merits in the field of research on interactions of electrons with atoms and molecules, especially in the field of plasma physics and astrophysics, and for his long-term cooperation and support of Comenius University, especially in the field of plasma physics.
Professor Nigel J. Mason is the head of School of Physical Sciences at the University of Kent, UK. Previously, he has been with the Open University in Milton Keynes, where he was a professor of Molecular Physics. Professor Mason is an outstanding scientist working in the fields of molecular physics, physics of electrons, ions and ionized gases including plasma. His activities in the field of radiation physics and astrochemistry are significant, and focused on the study of electron and ion processes taking place in the atmospheres of planets, asteroids and comets. He is the author of several books and hundreds of scientific publications.
Prof. N. J. Mason has a very positive relationship with Slovakia, which resulted in cooperation and support in the field of science and education. He established a long-term and fruitful cooperation with our colleagues from the Department of Experimental Physics. It is very important for our experimental scientists to maintain personal contacts with other institutions, to have the opportunity to exchange researchers and students. Prof. N.J. Mason trained or participated in the training of several doctoral students from Slovakia (Dr. Eva Vašeková, Dr. Gabriel Horváth, Dr. Juraj Országh) and also often hosted our colleagues (prof. J. D. Skalný, doc. J. Országh, doc. P. Papp, doc. V. Medvecká, dr. L. Moravský). He actively supports the exchange of students between Comenius University and University of Kent. With the support of prof. N. J. Mason, departments from Comenius University were involved in several scientific projects, such as EPIC, ITS LEIF within the 6th and 7th Framework Program of the EU, COST projects, the ESF EIPAM project, the H2020 ELEvaTE and Europlanet infrastructure projects.
The award was proposed by Professor Štefan Matejčík and approved by the Scientific council in 2019. Since then, we have been trying to find a suitable date for this ceremony. It was not easy due to previous pandemics and traffic restrictions.
Our faculty and Comenius University are very proud that we could personally present this important award to Professor N. Mason.

H and CN emissions as tracers of H2O molecules and organic compounds in meteoroids: a feasibility study and instrument design

Principal investigator: RNDr. Pavol Matlovič, PhD.
Investigators: doc. RNDr. Juraj Tóth, PhD., doc. RNDr. Leonard Kornoš, PhD., Mgr. Adriana Pisarčíková, Dr. Stefan Loehle, prof. Ing. Pavel Mach, CSc., Ing. Peter Varga
Subcontractors: Institute of Space Systems, University of Stuttgart, Nemecko; Vision Systems s.r.o.
Funding of project: European Space Agency, ESA PECS call AO/1-11107/22/NL/SC
Project duration: 2022-2024
The goal of the project is to develop and validate a method for the detection and analysis of the presence of H2O molecules and organic compounds in meteoroids by investigating the emission of the atomic Hα line and molecular band of the CN radical in spectra of meteors ablating in the Earth’s atmosphere and meteorites ablated in plasma wind tunnel facilities. In our preparatory study, we have shown that strong emission of Hα in meteors is characteristic for cometary bodies with higher contents of ices and organic compounds. Experiments on simulating meteorite ablation have for the first time revealed the variations of the CN emission, which is directly linked to the content of organic compounds in meteorites and also correlates with the measured Hα line intensity. In the project, the technique developed by investigating the simulated ablation of meteorites will be applied to a large dataset of meteor spectra observations caused by meteoroids from various dynamical sources in the Solar system. We will quantify the variations of Hα a CN and define the instrumental requirements and physical conditions of ablation for the improved detection of CN. Based on these data, a concept design of a new optical spectrograph for more efficient detection of Hα a CN in meteors will be developed.

Solidarity concert of Jordi Savall

October 30, 2022 at 6 p. m., Moyzesova Hall, Faculty of Arts CU

Jordi Savall, with the support of Pezinok City Council, will offer two solidarity concerts. The second concert will take place on Sunday 30th October at the Moyzesova Hall at the Faculty of Philosophy in Bratislava University and it´s organized with the support of the Pezinok City Council and Bratislava University and it is offered to the Ukrainian community in Bratislava, with the collaboration of Andrii Sukhanov, Art director of the classical dance of the Košice State Theatre.
These two concerts are performed by 14 musicians members from Maestro Savall’s orchestra Le Concert des Nations. Some of them have been auditioned and selected this year to participate in the YOCPA professional academies, as part of the Young Orchestra and Choir Professional Academy (YOCPA Project); and some others are young professional musicians that have worked with Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations in previous projects.
The YOCPA project aims to recover and celebrate the European musical heritage by training new generations of musicians and supporting them to reach the professional concert scene in Europe. The project combines the pedagogical work of professional experts with the learning experience of emerging musicians through academies that take place face to face and online. In addition, these academies involve the opportunity to perform with Le Concert des Nations in different European cities.
Apart from the learning experience that means performing in consolidated music halls and festivals, the project has the purpose of bringing music to different groups and communities in Europe that face a challenge in accessing arts and culture. The title of these concerts is “Le Goût Réunis (1670-1780)” with masterpieces from the Barroque period like the suite of Le bourgeois gentilhomme by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Battalia by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, The Fairy Qeen by Henry Purcell, Concerto IV in Re Maggiore by Angelo Corelli, Música sinfónica los ministriles by Antonio Rodríguez de Hita and La musica notturna di Madrid by Luigi Boccherini.

Bratislava, 26 October, 2022: A meeting of representatives of the academic community was held today...

In difficult times like these, Comenius University Bratislava is fully aware of its social responsibility. At the same time, it takes into consideration a pronounced change of the way in which the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic communicates, viewing this communication as constructive. After the demands formulated by the Slovak Rector's Conference on 13 September 2022 were partially satisfied, the representatives of CU’s academic community agreed that tuition would not be suspended on 17 November 2022. Comenius University, however, remains on protest alert. It resolutely demands that competent authorities, at the earliest possible opportunity, present a solution to the current situation which would be systemic, sustainable and predictable. At the moment, universities expend all their energy on ensuring basic survival and have no room to support any significant development.
CU’s academic community representatives agreed to give the Rector of Comenius University the mandate to continue negotiating with the government and with the representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport, aiming to meet the demands of public universities as outlined in the resolution of the Slovak Rector's Conference from September 2022.
Comenius University wants to stress that it never intended to turn its students into hostages. Nevertheless, and considering the current trend in the financing of universities, the insufficient compensation of increasing costs associated with high inflation, the rising prices of goods and services, and an absence a solution to the current situation, it cannot completely rule out that it might need to restrict its functioning partially or fully in the upcoming period.
