Seminar of Graph Theory - Roman Nedela (24.11.2022)

Thursday 24.11.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Roman Nedela (University of West Bohemia in Pilsen):
Half-arc-transitive graphs of arbitrarily large girth

Abstract:
A graph is half-arc-transitive if it is transitive on the vertices and edges, but not on the arcs (directed edges). It is well known that a finite half-arc-transitive has an even valency greater or equal to 4. Somewhat surprisingly, all constructions of 4-valent half-arc-transitive graphs known to date have bounded girth. This led Primož Šparl ask whether there exist 4-valent half-arc-transitive graphs of arbitrarily large girth. We answer this question in the affirmative.
This is a joint work with Jozef Širáň

Comenius University commemorates the International Students’ Day by presenting awards

Bratislava, 21 November 2022: Following a tradition of the International Students' Day, the Rector...

An academic commendation of the University’s Rector is awarded to students for excellent performance of their academic duties, outstanding results in sports while representing the university, or for exemplary civic attitudes. One of the thirty exceptional students who received the award this year was Samuel Andrejčák, who studies of organic chemistry and helps organise events related to chemistry at primary and secondary schools, including, among others, Chemouk, Popchemol, the Chemistry Olympiad or Chemistry Charge.
Another recipient of the award was Tomáš Šišmiš, a student of general medicine, who founded the ‘Diabetes as a Lifestyle’ project and organises an event promoting the World Diabetes Day. He was also the leader of the Anti-tobacco project and the organiser of the ‘World No-Tobacco Day’ event and several campaigns to raise awareness of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma.
Michaela Pavuková, a student of citizenship education and history, received the award for representing the university. As the leader of the student start-up Nobill, she won in the „Environment and green technologies“ category of the 2022 Slovak University Startup Cup. Iryna Vizna, who studies therapeutic pedagogy, received the award for her volunteer work in which she used her knowledge of Ukrainian to support Ukrainian families by helping their children with developmental problems.
Sports coaching and physical education student, as well as senior world champion in fitness aerobatics, Kristína Juricová was another awardee, as was Eliška Mintálová who has long and successfully represented Slovakia in canoe slalom.
Every year, the Rector also presents awards to teachers for supporting the scientific, artistic or professional activities of their students. This year, the thirty teachers also include gynaecologist and an obstetrician Jozef Záhumenský, political scientist Erik Láštic, dance teacher Matej Chren, geologist Martin Bednarik, and physicist Zdenko Machala.
„International experience shows that it is no longer enough to just be a good student. That is a foundation, on which one must further build one's excellence, curiosity, individuality and creativity, because that is the path to new discoveries and knowledge. I am proud that our teachers create an inspiring environment at our university, in which all gifted students can grow professionally and personally,“ said the rector of Comenius University, Marek Števček.

We participate in the Slovenská tepláreň project: Jana Kirschner and Para will perform in courtyard of Faculty of Arts

Bratislava, 21 November 2022: On 12 October 2022, Matúš Horváth, a student at our university,...

As part of the Slovenská tepláreň project, Comenius University will support a concert of the most prominent Slovak singer Jana Kirschner and the popular Bratislava band Para. The event take place on Friday, 25 November 2022, in the courtyard of the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University on Gondova Street. The concerts will begin at 12:15 p.m. At 11 a.m., there will be an open discussion on LGBTI+ topics, moderated by Adela Vinczeová. Transgender model Liberty Simon, her mother Jana Šimonová, priest Father Peter and the dean of the Faculty of Arts Marián Zouhar will be on the discussion panel. The venue has a capacity of 200 and admission is free until capacity is reached.
„October of 2022 became one of the darkest months in the history of Comenius University. Four of our students died in the tragedies on Zochová and Zámocká streets. The most terrible thing about the death of Matúš is that he became a victim of hatred towards LGBTI+ people. Our task now is to do everything we can to eliminate these hateful expressions in our society. Students must feel safe at the university regardless of their sexual and gender identity,“said Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University Bratislava.
The project „Concerts for Matúš and Juraj – Slovenská tepláreň“unites 355 art projects, 166 cultural and other venues, 45 festivals and supporting events and 47 entities which expressed their support, for a total of 613 participating performers and 199 events. The project is intended to express solidarity with the relatives and loved ones of Matúš and Juraj; to pay respect to those who made Tepláreň an open space where free people can meet; to express support for LGBTI+ people and show that Slovakia has the potential to become a country where everyone can feel safe and where members of minorities are accepted with respect and as a natural part of society. It also aims to stimulate legislative changes which will make it possible for all people in Slovakia, including LGBTI+, to lead fulfilling lives. The project promotes non-violence, togetherness and tolerance. It takes place between 12 and 27 November 2022 at various venues all over Slovakia.
Nuclear Seminar - Lucia Keszeghová (23.11.2022)

Wednesday 23.11.2022 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Mgr. Lucia Keszeghová:
Associated production of the top-quark pair and Z boson in proton-proton collisions at the ATLAS experiment

Abstract:
Associated production of the top-quark pair and Z boson (ttZ) is a rare process predicted by the Standard Model. The study of ttZ process is possible thanks to unprecedented energies and luminosities reached in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. So far, all the measured values of ttZ cross section are consistent with the Standard Model prediction at given centre-of-mass energy (0.86+0.07−0.08(scale)±0.03(PDF+αS) pb at 13 TeV). The latest analysis published by the ATLAS experiment in August 2021 measured the inclusive ttZ cross section at 13 TeV to be 0.99 ± 0.05(stat) ± 0.08(syst) pb. This result is based on the full LHC Run II dataset with integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. More precise experimental value is vital for more accurate confrontation with the Standard Model prediction. To achieve higher precision in the ttZ cross section measurement, the full ATLAS Run II dataset is being reanalysed. The inclusion of dilepton decay channel in the refined analysis significantly increases available statistics. However, the main improvement is the use of neural networks for separation of signal and background events. Preliminary results, which will be discussed during the seminar, indicate that neural networks significantly improve the measurement precision.

Scientists developed molecules capable of fighting resistant bacteria

Bratislava, 15 November 2022: Microorganisms resistant to antibiotics complicate the treatment of...

Humanity is struggling with increasingly frequent occurrence of microorganisms resistant to anti-biotics, which also raises the risk of global pandemics. „Nature provides an inexhaustible source of inspiration when looking for new anti-infective agents,“ says the principal investigator of the international team Josef Jampílek from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University.
<link https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/23/6/3159 _blank>The research team
, which also included scientists from the Palacky University in Olomouc and other Czech scientific institutions, developed unique molecules derived from cinnamic acid. Compounds designed in this way are up to 100 times more effective against resistant strains of bacteria than standard antibiotics. They exhibit several different mechanisms of action, making them resistant to the development of resistance.
The compounds are capable of disrupting the energy metabolism of bacterial cells or the structure, or biosynthesis, of bacterial membranes. „The important thing is that they are also non-toxic to humans and do not exhibit any other adverse effects. In addition, the compounds also suppress inflammation. We are now developing the next generation of these remarkably simple, small, and highly bioactive molecules,“ says Professor Jampílek from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University.
It is an advantage if a medicine has a dual effect. Inflammation often occurs at the site of the bacterial infection, and vice versa - secondary bacterial infections occur at a site of inflammation. The chemical nature of the compounds allows their processing into medicinal preparations both for general and local use. Once the researchers have obtained the results for the next generation of molecules, they will work on clarifying the mechanism of action. The next step is extensive pre-clinical testing, followed by the development of a suitable form of medicine.

Abstract:
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, and let $\lambda_{1}\geq\ldots\geq \lambda_{n}$ be the eigenvalues of (the adjacency matrix $A$ of) $G$. The energy $E(G)$ of $G$ is defined to be the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of $G$, $E(G)=|\lambda_{1}|+\ldots+|\lambda_{n}|$. Several upper and lower bounds for this parameter can be found in literature; for example, the energy of a graph $G$ is known to be greater than or equal to twice the minimum degree of $G$. In this talk, we present further results and improvements for these bounds based on joint papers of the presenter, Slobodan Filipovski and Ivan Gutman.
