Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Natália S. Móller (6.12.2022)

Tuesday 6.12.2022 at 14:00 hod., Lecture room F2/125

Natália S. Móller (Institute of Physics SAS):
Indefinite causal order: gravitational proposals and definitions of events in perspective
Abstract:
Time in general relativity is dynamical and the ticking rates of clocks experiencing different gravitational fields are distinct. Thus, puzzling effects could happen in a theoretical configuration where a massive body is in a quantum superposition state of different positions. The idea of indefinite causal order comes from the possibility that, in these configurations, the causal relations among events would be in a superposition state as well. For instance, two events could be in a superposition of being in the past and future of each other. It is suggested that these configurations could be tested operationally using the proper times measured by clocks lying on such quantum spacetime.
An important research goal nowadays is to find means compatible with the current technological capabilities that make these theoretical ideas possible to be tested. Here I will talk about our more recent results, where we show how to simulate an indefinite causal order with accelerated agents, and how to perform it with the gravity of Earth with current technology. Moreover, with the same techniques, it is possible to optimize these tasks in a quantum spacetime, what makes a hypothetical experiment several orders of magnitude more efficient.
Beyond the discussion of applicability in experiments, it is also important to understand the fundamentals and interpretations of each proposal in the field of indefinite causal order. The interpretation of such tasks are under discussion and there is absolutely no consensus among the specialists. This disagreement is based on the fact that many different definitions of events are being considered by authors. I will raise this discussion in an unbiased way, summarizing all the definitions of events in the field of indefinite causal order and how they affect the interpretation of different proposals.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Jozef Širáň (1.12.2022)

Thursday 1.12.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Jozef Širáň (STU Bratislava):
A computer-free classification of orientably-regular maps of genus $p+1$ for prime $p$

Abstract:
In 2010, M. Conder, T. Tucker and the presenter published a classification of orientably-regular maps of genus $p+1$ for primes $p > 13$, with a computer-free proof for $p > 83$; for primes $p$ in the range $17 \le p \le 83$ part of the argument relied on computational results of M. Conder. Classification of such maps for $p\le 7$ was available by earlier results going back to 1930s -- 1980s, however, in a number of cases without explicit proofs.
In the talk we will give an outline of methods and results leading to a computer-free classification of orientably-regular maps of genus $p+1$ for all primes $p\le 83$ (and hence for all primes $p$). This is a report on a joint work with M. Bachraty, M. Conder and J. Siagiova.

Wednesday 30.11.2022 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

prof. RNDr. Stanislav Tokár, DrSc.:
The latest results of the Higgs boson and top quark studies from the LHC

Abstract:
The seminar is mainly focused on the latest results regarding the physics of the Higgs boson and top quark obtained in the LHC experiments. At the same time, these results are analysed in connection with the current status of testing of the Standard Model and the impacts on such issues of particle physics as is the vacuum stability or the internal consistency of the Standard Model. The issue of further advancement of particle physics is also considered.

Comenius University awards an honorary doctorate to the German pharmacologist Joachim Neumann

Bratislava, 23 November 2022: Today, Comenius University Bratislava awarded the title of Doctor...

Joachim Neumann is currently Professor at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg, where he leads the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology. He dedicated his research career to experimental pharmacology, focussing on heart damage and failure, and on the development of new molecules for the treatment of heart disease.
„Learning how basic pharmacology can help understand and treat heart disease has always been one of my interests,“ says Joachim Neumann. „In Münster I had the opportunity to work with Marek Matúš who was starting with hemodynamic measurements in transgenic mice, and who was soon joined by Ján Klimas,“ he says of the budding collaboration with experts from the Faculty of Pharmacy of Comenius University in 1992.
This cooperation resulted in the establishment of a team of Slovak researchers, who received his scientific guidance and education in his laboratories, and whose research careers he helped launch. Another reason why the faculty nominated him for the honorary doctorate was his work on such joint projects.
„Years ago, I had the good fortune to grow under the guidance of Professor Neumann as a postgraduate student and young assistant, and today I have the honor of working with him and with the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology that he leads, on further research projects,“ said Ján Klimas, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the award ceremony.
The Professor's rich body of research consisting of over 200 original, high-impact papers, also includes more than 20 highly-cited publications co-authored by students and staff of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

SAS Award for Professor Povinec

The Slovak Academy of Sciences, based on the decision of the SAS Presidency, awarded Prof. Pavel...

Dionýz Ilkovič's Honorary Plaque was awarded to prof. Povinec on the occasion of his life jubilee for excellent results in nuclear physics research, and for the development and application of nuclear methods in environmental sciences on a global scale, as well as for his contribution in the field of science management. Prof. Povinec is a recognized expert in investigations of rare nuclear processes and in environmental physics, he built special laboratories at the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics of the FMPI of CU, as well as at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Monaco, where he was engaged in marine radioactivity research, organized and participated in several oceanographic expeditions, published over 100 papers with this topic, and became the first Slovak oceanographer. He gained new knowledge about the radioactivity of the environment, about the impact of nuclear power plants on their surroundings, about the radiation consequences of the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents, etc. The obtained results contributed to a better understanding of nuclear and environmental processes, and to a wider use of isotopes as natural tracers. He published the results of his research in recognized international journals (over 400 papers registered in WoS with over 8000 citations and h = 46). He was the first Slovak author to receive the American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (with co-authors Katsumi Hirose and Michio Aoyama) for the monograph "Fukushima Accident: Radioactivity Impact on the Environment". He led several international projects, lectured at important international conferences, which he also often organized, and thanks to other activities he contributed to the successful presentation of Slovakia abroad.
