A historic success of our research as CU researcher Michal Májek wins a prestigious ERC grant

Bratislava, 27 February 2023: Comenius University Bratislava is the first university in Slovakia to...

The CAPELE project focuses on using mechanical energy to activate organic molecules. The goal is to use a new method of activating molecules using piezoelectric catalysts in the search for new reactions. The project is part of basic research but it might have potential practical applications in the synthesis of medicinal substances or in materials science. This grant opens a new chapter of Slovak research.
"I believe that we will succeed in developing new reactions that can be interesting both as basic research, but also in terms of their practical applications. I will certainly involve my students in the project, because I think that working at a research university must include training new scientific talent." says the author of the project Michal Májek from Comenius University.
Slovak scientists have an extremely low success rate when applying for the most prestigious research grants in Europe. Only three such grants have been awarded to Slovaks so far, twice to male researchers and once to a female researcher. Developing a project is challenging and requires months of preparation, a lot of support from colleagues, and the cooperation of the national ERC contact. Zuzana Reptová from the Center for Scientific and Technical Information of the Slovak Republic is this contact and she assists Slovak researchers with the preparation of projects for the ERC, organises trainings and runs practice interviews.
"Michal Májek faced the difficult challenge of designing research that was sufficiently ambitious and at the same time had the potential to extend the boundaries of human knowledge. He also had to show that his project was feasible - something nobody was able to do so far," explains Zuzana Reptová.
The ERC is an unprecedented research funding ecosystem: it supports top researchers in their pursuit of knowledge, hoping that they will find answers to open questions of science and push the boundaries of human knowledge. The only selection criteria are excellence of the research goal, and the profile of the researcher. Top researchers from all around the world assess the applications in a demanding, two-round evaluation.
"Obtaining the first ERC grant at Comenius University is great news for our university and an important signal to other universities that it can be done. It is an immense success, we are proud of our Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mr. Michal Májek. We, the management of the university, strive to create conditions that will enable other similar successes in the nearest future." responds CU rector Marek Števček.

Gynaecologists introduce a new metastasis testing method

Bratislava, 23 February 2023: University doctors are the first in Slovakia and the Czech Republic...

In women with negative sentinel nodes (which are likely to be the first to contain metastases), this procedure replaces the original complete axillary lymph node dissection and reduces the number of postoperative complications. A rapid histological examination is used to obtain information on the state of the nodes, but it has shortcomings.
OSNA (One-Step Nucleic Acid Amplification) can process the entire homogenized node and provide more accurate information about the total tumour load as fast as rapid histology. "It can also predict the probability of tumours in the remaining nodes in the armpit. This will also reduce the risks of repeated armpit surgery," explains Kamil Pohlodek from the 2nd. Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the Faculty of Medicine and UNB.
At the clinic, a total of 58 nodes of 20 patients with breast cancer were examined using this molecular-biological method. "The results were consistent with the definitive postoperative histopathological examination in all cases," concludes Professor Kamil Pohlodek from Comenius University.

Štefan Pócoš:
Explainability and Interpretability of Deep Neural Networks

Abstract:
It is well known that artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been shown to achieve outstanding accuracy in plenty of tasks. Although in some cases their performance is getting to its peaks, it is not the only aspect researchers are concerned about. One of the downsides of modern ANNs is their lack of explainability and interpretability. This is easily demonstrated by fooling them using adversarial examples. We examined this aspect of ANNs by applying several methods to fool them and visualized their inner behavior when fooled. We will also talk about our plan for future research, including the usage of modern networks based on attention.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Petra Macková (2.3.2023)

Thursday 2.3.2023 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Mgr. Petra Macková:
Fast diffusion equation: uniqueness of solutions with a moving singularity
Abstract:
This talk focuses on open questions in the area of the uniqueness of distributional solutions of the fast diffusion equation with a given source term. Assuming that the source term is a measure, the existence of different classes of solutions is known, however, their uniqueness is an open problem. The existence of a class of asymptotically radially symmetric solutions with a singularity that moves along a prescribed curve was proved by M. Fila, J. Takahashi, and E. Yanagida. More recently, it has been established by M. Fila, P. M., J. Takahashi, and E. Yanagida that these solutions solve the corresponding problem with a moving Dirac source term. In this talk, we discuss the uniqueness of these solutions.
This is a joint work with M. Fila.

Doctoral colloquium - Endre Hamerlik (27.2.2023)

Monday 27.2.2023 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Endre Hamerlik:
Morphology Spreads Progressively: Evidence from Probing BERTs
Abstract:
Large language models (LLMs) have become increasingly popular in natural language processing due to their impressive performance on a range of tasks. To better understand the internal representations of LLMs, probing techniques are being used, which involve training diagnostic classifiers to predict specific linguistic features based on the LLM's hidden representations.
In this study, we investigate multilingual LLMs' (mBERT's and XLM-RoBERTa's) internal representations using probing techniques and explore the effect of input perturbations on these representations. We also introduce new controls and ablations to evaluate the impact of these perturbations on the diagnostic classifiers' performance. We utilize Shapley values, a model-agnostic approach, to identify the most influential tokens in the input that affect the LLM's internal representations.
Our results indicate that the diagnostic classifiers are highly sensitive to input perturbations, imlpying that LLMs' representations are highly dependent on specific linguistic features like morphology. The analysis of Shapley values provides insight into which input tokens have the greatest impact on the LLM's representations of morphological features. One of the most intriguing findings that emerges is a strong tendency for the preceding context to hold more morphosyntactic information relevant to the prediction than the following context.

Seminar of Graph Theory - František Kardoš (23.2.2023)

Thursday 23.2.2023 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

František Kardoš:
Disjoint odd circuits in a bridgeless cubic graph can be quelled by a single perfect matching

Abstract:
Let G be a bridgeless cubic graph. The Berge-Fulkerson Conjecture (1970s) states that G admits a list of six perfect matchings such that each edge of G belongs to exactly two of these perfect matchings. If answered in the affirmative, two other recent conjectures would also be true: the Fan-Raspaud Conjecture (1994), which states that G admits three perfect matchings such that every edge of G belongs to at most two of them; and a conjecture by Mazzuoccolo (2013), which states that G admits two perfect matchings whose deletion yields a bipartite subgraph of G. It can be shown that given an arbitrary perfect matching of G, it is not always possible to extend it to a list of three or six perfect matchings satisfying the statements of the Fan-Raspaud and the Berge-Fulkerson conjectures, respectively. In this talk, we show that given any 1+-factor F (a spanning subgraph of G such that its vertices have degree at least 1) and an arbitrary edge e of G, there always exists a perfect matching M of G containing e such that G∖(F∪M) is bipartite. Our result implies Mazzuoccolo's conjecture, but not only. It also implies that given any collection of disjoint odd circuits in G, there exists a perfect matching of G containing at least one edge of each circuit in this collection.
This is a joint work with Edita Máčajová and Jean Paul Zerafa.

A UNIQUE ION ANALYZER INSTALLED WITHIN THE ACCORD PROJECT IN THE COMENIUS UNIVERSITY

As part of the Comenius University and the Slovak Technical University project "Advancing...

AMS technology will significantly expand radioisotope research from tritium through beryllium-10, carbon-14, aluminum-26, chlorine-36, calcium-41, iron-55, strontium-90, iodine-129, cesium-135,137, lead-210, radium-226, protactinium-231, isotopes of thorium, uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium up to isotopes of curium, as it represents a revolution in the analysis of isotopes because it allows to carry out research that was not possible before either because of the low sensitivity of the analytical equipment or because of the necessity to use too large samples that were not available.
A target, prepared from the investigated sample is placed in the ion source, from which a beam of studied ions is forwarded to tandem accelerator, and then after acceleration and focusation is forwarded to the ion analyzer. The analyzer directly analyzes radioactive nuclei as if they were stable, so there is no need to wait for their radioactive decay because the mass of the ions is analyzed directly, not the radiation that arises during the radioactive decay of nuclei (e.g., beta-radiation), which because of their long half-lives is serious problem. By using accelerated ions, the background is substantially reduced, so it is possible to determine even a few tens of investigated radioactive atoms in the sample, compared to tens to hundreds of millions of atoms, needed in traditional analyses.
The built accelerator center, including AMS and IBA technologies, supplied by National Electrostatic Corp. (USA) and KVANT, s.r.o., together with low-background gamma-spectrometry, which has been a traditional research program at DNPB for about fifty years, will belong to the important world laboratories engaged in ion technologies and in radioactivity studies of terrestrial and extraterrestrial objects.
A view of the High energy ion analyzer for accelerator mass spectrometry together with CENTA team (in the background from the right: electromagnetic analyzer, electrostatic analyzers and the-end-of-the-line ion detector).
