Matej Fandl:
Attractor models of associative memory - on learning in modern Hopfield networks
Abstract:
Neural networks exhibiting point attractor dynamics are useful for modeling associative memory. A well known example is the Hopfield network, the modern variants of which got into the spotlight recently due to their huge storage capacity and usability in deep learning architectures. Our work builds on the interpretation of these networks as networks with 1 hidden layer of feature detectors. We see space for improvement in terms of training modern Hopfield networks, since the currently known methods either sacrifice training time for the computational complexity of the model, or the other way around. Our talk will describe our attempts at designing a novel learning rule for these networks, the use of which is expected to lead to fast and efficient distribution of labor between the hidden units.

Comenius University inaugurated managements of university and of faculties

Bratislava, 8 March 2023: Today, the Rector of Comenius University, Marek Števček, and the Deans of...

During the previous term of office under the leadership of Rector Marek Števček, the university had to deal with the pandemic and then the crisis resulting from the war against Ukraine, the energy crisis, and a reduction of the budget for higher education. Against the odds, the dormitories and some faculties proceeded with renovation projects, the canteen at the Družba dormitory was upgraded, the legendary UniK student club at Mlynská dolina was resuscitated and a new CU Infocentre was created in Štúrová street. Simultaneously, the university achieved success in the area of research - from its excellent position in the international VER ranking (Verification of Excellence in Research) to the award of a prestigious ERC grant to our scientist Michal Májek. In the future, the Rector plans to continue the renovations, intensify digitalisation, strengthen international cooperation and focus on enhancing the social prestige of Slovak science.
Eight deans were inaugurated.

The new deans are: The Faculty of Medicine has a new management led by its dean Juraj Payer, and dean Katarína Žilková leads the Faculty of Education. Peter Štarchoň becomes the new dean of the Faculty of Management, from 1 March.

The inaugurated deans and deans who continue in their next term: Four previous deans continue at their faculties as of 1 February. Eduard Burda continues to lead the Faculty of Law, Peter Fedor continues as the dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Andrea Čalkovská stays at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin and Daniel Ševčovič remains for another term as dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics. Marián Zouhar resumes as dean of the Faculty of Arts on 7 May.

Deans who were inaugurated earlier: Milan Jurík continues as dean at the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Faculty, Jozef Jančovič at the Faculty of Roman Catholic Theology of Cyril and Methodius, and Ján Klimas at the Faculty of Pharmacy, where the elections were held in previous years.

Several faculties are led by temporarily appointed deans: Until new statutes are approved and regular elections held, Viktor Bielik is the acting dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport and Lucia Mokrá the acting dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences.

At the ceremony, vice-rectors of the university were also formally installed. Jana Duračinská is the vice-rector for property management and investment, Jozef Masarik is the vice-rector for science, doctoral studies and projects, Radomír Masaryk is the vice-rector for external relations, Viera Štvrtinová is the vice-rector for quality and development and Jozef Tancer is the vice-rector for international relations. The new vice-rector for education and social affairs is Eva Viglašová while the other vice-rectors continue in their second term of office.
"Universities firmly stand on the ground with both feet, but their heads may and must be in the clouds. Those two legs are research and quality education. We are here for our students, we are here for the people whom we lead to replace us one day. The element of reason unifies everything in the spirit of social responsibility of universities." said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.

Doctoral colloquium - Dana Škorvánková (6.3.2023)

Monday 6.3.2023 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Dana Škorvánková:
Automatic 3D Human Pose Estimation, Skeleton Tracking and Body Measurements

Abstract:
The estimation of human body pose and its measurements is an emerging problem that drives attention in many research areas. An automatic and accurate approach to address the problem is crucial in many fields of computer vision-oriented industry. We target multiple human body analysis-related tasks, including pose estimation, pose tracking, and anthropometric body measurements estimation. Similarly to other research fields, deep learning methods proved to outperform analytical strategies. We also examine various types of visual input data, including three-dimensional point clouds. Since obtaining a large-scale database of real annotated training data is time-consuming and non-effective, we propose to substitute or augment the training process with synthetically generated human body data. We will report preliminary results of our experiments within each of the stated tasks, along with the already published parts of our research.

Iveta Bečková:
Adversarial Examples in Deep Learning
Abstract:
Deep neural networks achieve remarkable performance in multiple fields. However, after proper training they suffer from an inherent vulnerability against adversarial examples (AEs).The AEs attempt to find the worst-case perturbation in input space, resulting in faulty output (such as misclassification). Different methods of attacks provide different approximations of this worst-case and each of them has certain advantages and disadvantages. The problem gets even more complicated in the deep RL setting, where time is also a factor. We will present our work on comparing different adversarial attacks, as well as plans for future research in adversarial attacks on deep RL agents.

A Unique Ion Analyzer

A unique ion analyzer installed in the framework of the ACCORD project in the FMPI CU.

A unique high-energy ion analyzer for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) of isotopes was put into operation in the Center for Nuclear and Accelerator Technologies (CENTA) of the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics (DNPB) of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the Comenius University (FMPI CU), built within the joint project of the Comenius University and the Slovak Technical University "Advancing University Capacity and Competence in Research, Development and Innovation (ACCORD)", co-financed the European Union.
The analyzer directly analyzes radioactive nuclei as if they were stable, so there is no need to wait for their radioactive decays because the mass of the ions is analyzed directly, not the radiation that arises during the radioactive decay of nuclei (e.g., beta-radiation), which due to their long half-lives is a serious problem. A target, prepared from the investigated sample, is placed in the ion source, from which a beam of studied ions is forwarded to the tandem accelerator, and then, after acceleration and focusing of the beam, the ions are analyzed in the high-energy analyzer. When accelerated ions are analyzed, the background is substantially reduced, so it is possible to determine in the sample already a few tens of investigated radioactive atoms, compared to tens to hundreds of millions of atoms needed in traditional analyses. For example, thanks to AMS, it is already possible to analyze carbon-14 in samples with a weight of around one microgram of carbon, which is a million times smaller than could be analyzed using gas detectors. The measurement time has also decreased significantly from several days or weeks to a few minutes, so that a substantial part of the preparation of the sample (several hours) is taken up. AMS will make it possible to significantly expand the research, especially long-lived radionuclides from tritium through beryllium-10, carbon-14, aluminum-26, chlorine-36, calcium-41, iron-55, strontium-90, iodine-129, cesium-135,137, lead-210, radium-226, protactinium-231, isotopes of thorium, uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium up to isotopes of curium. AMS represents a revolution in the analysis of isotopes because it allows for research that was not possible before, either because of the low sensitivity of the analytical equipment or because of the necessity to use too large samples that were not available.
The analyzer, together with the already existing facility for sample analysis using ion beams (Ion Beam Analysis, IBA), built within the EU Structural Funds and in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will significantly expand the research and use of accelerator technologies in natural, biomedical, technical, and humanitarian sciences, from astrophysics to archaeology. Among the most important applications will be climate change studies (Milankovitch cycles, variations in solar activity, past volcanic eruptions), space weather research (solar eruptions in the past, possible impacts on terrestrial infrastructure and space flights), the use of radionuclides as tracers of natural processes in the atmosphere-biosphere and atmosphere-hydrosphere (ocean) ecosystems, investigations of radioactive pollution of the environment from the operation and accidents of nuclear power plants, investigations of rare nuclear processes and decays, including the search for dark matter particles, nuclear reaction studies for astrophysics and thermonuclear physics, investigations of radioactive contamination of new generation of materials, modifications of properties of materials after their irradiation at the accelerator, research on damage to DNA and living organisms after their irradiation with ionizing radiation, research on degenerative changes in the brain of patients suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, investigations of the authenticity of works of art (paintings, statues), radiocarbon dating of samples from important archaeological sites in Slovakia, and in many other applications.
Much of this research will be possible thanks to terrestrial isotopic archives (tree rings, ice-core samples from deep boreholes, stalagmites/stalactites, freshwater and marine sediments, etc.), but also thanks to extraterrestrial archives (meteorites, lunar samples and in perspective also rock samples from Mars), because some of them store isotopic information from thousand years to hundreds of millions of years. Broad domestic and international cooperation, including joint scientific projects with the participation of students, PhD students, and postdocs, will be a necessary prerequisite for successful research in such a wide range of scientific programs.
The built accelerator center, including AMS and IBA technologies, supplied by National Electrostatic Corp. (USA) a KVANT s.r.o., together with low-background gamma spectrometry, which has been a traditional research program at DNPB for about fifty years, will belong to the unique laboratories engaged in accelerator technologies and in radioactivity studies of terrestrial and extraterrestrial objects.
