Computer vision seminar - Gabriela Czanner (29.3.2023)

Wednesday 29.3.2023 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

doc. Gabriela Czanner (School of Computer Science and Mathematics at Liverpool John Moores University):
Statistical learning from complex data for better understanding and decision making in neurobiology and medicine

Abstract:
In domains of medicine and neuroscience, there is an increasing number of complex datasets. They have potential to answer questions that have not been answered yet. However, the growth of the new datasets needs to be matched with growth of appropriate flexible statistical learning methods. One of the frameworks that is appropriate is a so-called model-based statistical learning methodology. The key idea is to build a complex model, that captures the complexity of the data, and then do use this model for learning: to do inference about disease or biology or to do a prediction.
Here, we first bring four typical complex data scenarios to illustrate the rich spectrum of problems that complex data can bring. The first scenario is from neuroscience, were we studied spiking behaviour of hippocampal neurons of monkey which was learning a location-scene association task. These high-frequency data (every 1ms) were studied to understand how the neuron was involved in the monkey’s learning. In the second scenario we use data from general practices, linked with hospital records, to find out if there is an increased risk of oesophageal cancer in those who take bisphosphonates to prevent or slow down osteoporosis. In the third scenario, we use longitudinally collected data from epilepsy patients, from several visits, and we aimed to predict as early as possible, which patient is in remission. In the last illustrating scenario, high dimensional spatial data: the images of retina. Our aim was to find out how to learn about risk factors of retinal diseases, as well as how to detect diseases.
We will show how we used statistical models to formulate the problem of data complexity, and how we then used the models for statistical learning: to test statistical hypotheses or to detect disease. In the hippocampus neuron, we developed and implemented algorithm that learns from the fitted model, we showed how we learned about neurons’ role in monkey’s behaviour, we then extended our work to develop novel signal-to-noise ratio for neurons. We will show how we approached the problem of confounding and how found new risk factor for oesophageal cancer. We will share experience of how we developed dynamic procedure for monitoring of epilepsy patients, and how we made it safe. Finally, we will discuss our work on statistical spatial models of retina, how this leads to higher power of hypothesis testing, and to high accuracy of disease detection, comparable to machine learning methods.
We will also show how the illustrating examples led to further research and how these seemingly different scenarios are interlinked. We also discuss future avenues for research to harness complex datasets.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Richard Kollár (30.3.2023)

Thursday 30.3.2023 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Richard Kollár:
Self-organization in multi-lane traffic model
Abstract:
Self-organization is a property of many systems in biology, sociology, economics or telecommunications. Conflicts within the system are resolved by moving to other territories, networks and channels. We study self-organization in a model stochastic system of individuals moving on a circular track. The model is a modification of a system studied by Goldsztein (2017, 2020) but it cannot be treated by the same method as it changes the number of states from finite to infinity. We prove the certainty of self-organization in the system. Quite unexpectedly, the model leads to generalizations and connections with other problems.
This is a joint work with Kamila Friedrichova, Jan Glut (Bc. students).

Nearly all testicular cancer patients can be cured, says an expert from Comenius University

Bratislava, 22 March, 2023: Testicular cancer is the only type of cancer with a cure rate over 95...

summarises the latest, most significant medical advances in Slovak and international research of testicular tumours. Our team of Slovak medical specialists and researchers is world-renowned and regularly cooperates in international expert groups, presenting their discoveries in journals and at conferences.
Our experts from the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University significantly contributed to the knowledge of biomarkers for a more accurate prognosis of this disease. They mapped the effects of the immune system on the disease, and discovered that chemotherapy resistance is caused by malfunctions in DNA repair in the tumour and tumour stem cells. The findings helped to better identify patients with a very good or a very poor prognosis and led to several original clinical trials involving innovative drugs. Our researchers also contributed to the detection of several types of delayed effects of treatment in cured patients and are beginning to reveal the mechanisms of such toxicity at the molecular level. It turns out that disruption of the intestinal microbiome during treatment, among other reasons, can play an important role, stimulating further studies in the future.
Doctors and researchers have been systematically treating testicular tumours since the mid-1960s. The most important step towards the cure of testicular cancer was the discovery of the antitumour effect of cisplatin and the subsequent use of cisplatin in combination with other chemotherapy drugs in those patients whose prognosis was ‘incurable’. Treatment regimens using cisplatin have successfully caught on worldwide.
„Today's form of successful testicular cancer treatment is based on the improvement of chemotherapy treatment methods and the improvement of surgical techniques for the removal of residual metastases in the complex anatomical environment of the abdominal cavity, lungs, liver, brain or bones,“ explains Michal Chovanec from the 2nd. oncology clinic of the Medical Faculty and NOÚ.
Equally important are innovative diagnostic methods using imaging, such as computer tomography or magnetic resonance, as well as the discovery of new molecular markers. These help to improve our understanding of the biological nature of this disease and to search for innovative drugs for the small group of patients who do not respond well to salvage chemotherapy and are dying of the disease.
The British Medical Journal, where the study was published, is a world leader in medicine, and one of the oldest journals in this field. „It is a tremendous honour for me to provide my research perspective on today's testicular oncology. I believe that initiatives like this one can publicise and deepen our passion for medicine and for the discovery of better and safer treatments for our patients, not only those with testicular cancer,“ says lead author Michal Chovanec from CU.

Faculty of Law has renewed the Institute of a Student Research Assistant

On Monday, March 13, 2023, the Dean of the Faculty, Associate Professor Eduard Burda, presented...

On Monday, March 13, 2023, the Dean of the Faculty, Associate Professor Eduard Burda, presented seven students of the faculty with decrees appointing them as Student Research Assistants. The faculty has renewed this successful and useful institute, which allows students to participate in the scientific research carried out by the faculty and to attain the knowledge and skills that researchers need. In his address prior to the presentation of the decrees, the Dean emphasized that the faculty will strive to engage the students in activities that will enable them to grow professionally.
According to internal regulations, the mission of the student research assistant ("SRA") is to participate in partial tasks in scientific research carried out by a particular department or a particular institute of FLAW CU under the guidance of an employee of FLAW CU. The engagement of SRA may take various forms; for example, it may include the retrieval of sources (literature, case law), their aggregation, and review, compilation of knowledge arising from them, and subsequent analysis, collection, processing, and preliminary interpretation of data in the framework of empirical research. Furthermore, SRA may engage in the administration of grant tasks, processing of grant applications, organising of scientific conferences and other academic and professional events, participation in scientific conferences and other academic and professional events and in meetings of research teams, but of course also in conducting their own partial research and processing its results into the form of a Student Scientific and Specialist Activity ("SSSA") thesis, and scientific or professional paper.

As the activities of the Student Research Assistants are part of the SSSA project, the appointed students have also been enrolled in the relevant SSSA elective courses.

Appointed student research assistants are as follows:
Bc. Filip Loffay, who will conduct research in the Department of Civil Law under the supervision of Dr. Rakova, in particular on the issue of trans identity of minors and the ethical and legal aspects related to informed consent, the legal status of vulnerable persons and the issue of the passing of time in private law.
Alex Želinský at the Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics will focus his research, conducted under the supervision of Professor Čentėš, mainly on the analysis of the legal regulation and decision-making of courts in relation to the criminal group and the legal regulation and limits of the use of the institute of the cooperating witness.
Bc. Maximilián Kiko will work as a student research assistant in the same department under the supervision of Dr. Mihálik. His research will mainly focus on artificial intelligence and criminal liability; endangering under the influence of an addictive substance in the operation of electric scooters; the consequences of substitution of a convicted person in the criminal process in criminal offences requiring prior sanctioning of the offender; and the (in)sufficiency of legal regulation and application practice in the offence of credit fraud.
Alžbeta Šimeková, under the supervision of Professor Strémy from the Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics, will examine the issue of restorative justice while focusing on the comparison of the inequality of criminal rates as opposed to the importance of rights and legally protected interests from the perspective of the governmental criminal policy, including the development of de lege ferenda proposals.
Daniel Richter, the fourth of the student research assistants in the Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics, under the guidance of Associate Professor Burda, will be conducting research within the area of the provisions of Section 363 et seq. of the Criminal Procedure Code and de lege ferenda considerations or issues related to the facilitation of pre-trial proceedings.
Stela Košťálová at the Institute of Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law, under the guidance of Associate Professor Andraško, will focus her research on legal issues related to technology and its subsequent impact on human rights.
Bc. Jasmína Rebeka Paráková under the supervision of Dr. Mesarčík will work at the same institute where she will participate in research of law and artificial intelligence, specifically in the project "Law and Artificial Intelligence".
It certainly is not the last appointment of student research assistants this semester. The handover of decrees to other students is being planned, and teachers interested in supervising students can still submit proposals for appointment. We hope that the Student Research Assistants will not only gain valuable knowledge, but also provide genuine support to their supervisors, and their engagement will be reciprocally rewarding.

We asked the students about their motivation to join the Student Research Assistants and their research topics.
"I decided to join the Student Research Assistants because I was very interested in a topic of research, the Law and Artificial Intelligence. at the Institute of Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law.. As this topic is being covered and debated more and more nowadays, I am particularly interested in the legal point of view, namely how something like artificial intelligence can be regulated. It is something that is constantly changing and rapidly developing. I am also curious about how legal research is conducted because it is easier to imagine research in medicine or natural sciences than in the law. I am very excited that the faculty came up with this opportunity and that I can also participate and extend my knowledge." Bc. Jasmína Rebeka Paráková.
"I wanted to become a Student Research Assistant, especially because I have realised that law is what I wish to spend time on in the future, and I think it is important to pursue your specialization as early as you can. In addition, I think the SRA is a good position not only to start your legal research work, but also to cope with particular application pitfalls. That is why I am particularly interested in pursuing criminal law especially. In my scientific work, I want to focus primarily on Section 363 of the Criminal Procedure Code, since I am already writing my SSSA thesis on this topic. I also plan to participate in any topic that my supervisor is involved in, as criminal law is a very complex and really interesting branch of law." Daniel Richter
"I was intrigued by the opportunity to participate in legal research directly at the Faculty, and I find it as a way to explore the boundaries set by the current legislation and to reflect on its shortcomings, especially in the area of rapidly evolving technologies. This newly introduced institute will allow students to dive deeper into legal issues that can ultimately advance the legal science. My primary focus will be on exploring legal issues affecting the impact of new technologies on human rights, and, as part of this, I will also conduct legal analyses and assist in activities that pertain to research, an activity that I am looking forward to as I will be able to participate directly in the research." Stela Košťálová.

Abstract:
In recent years the popularity of creating large language models has been incredibly rising. Most modern LLMs based on Transformers architecture offer great accuracy in many different text-based tasks but are often limited in some areas. For many low or mid-resource languages (such as Slovak), one of the biggest limitations is the amount of annotated data needed for fine-tuning such big model.
