Comenius University offers career counselling for students

Bratislava, 12 April, 2023: Since the end of February, students who need advice about their careers...

Some people find out that they no longer enjoy the field of study they chose. They wonder what to study instead and doubt creeps in whether to study at all. Some wonder about the possible career paths after graduating. Others need confirmation that they are going in the right direction. Career counselling can help with all these questions, but it can also be useful when drafting your resume or letter of motivation, or before your first job interview. In any of these cases, you can make use of
, provided free of charge by Comenius University Bratislava, at its Mlyny campus.
Individual counselling is available along with group counselling in the form of workshops. Individual career counselling takes place in-person or online. The first meeting serves to explore the client's situation and determine the goals. „Later in the counselling process, I accompany my clients and offer them support. I use various innovative methods based on building experiences, and techniques that encourage spontaneity. The goal is to achieve better knowledge of oneself, to improve efficient decision-making and career planning,“ says Dominika Vajdová, CU’s career counsellor.
In the next academic year, the counselling service plans to begin organising group workshops named „You Compass on the Career Path“, focusing on self-knowledge, discovering career options, decision-making and career planning.
„Career counselling offers the opportunity to discover one's strengths and values, to identify interests, abilities and competences, helping to raise one's knowledge of oneself. It also helps to find your way around the labour market and apply for jobs, while respecting your unique nature. Career counselling is particularly useful for students at the time when they are deciding about their future - in continuing to study or entering the labour market.“ adds Dominika Vajdová from CU.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Richard Bíró (13.4.2023)

Thursday 13.4.2023 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Richard Bíró:
Hamiltonian cycles in cubic planar bipartite graphs

Abstract:
Barnette's conjecture states that every cubic planar bipartite 3-connected graph is Hamiltonian. Only partial results are known. One approach is to study subgraphs (multipoles) known as reducible configurations. We say that multipole G is reducible to multipole R if every Hamiltonian cycle which passes through R can be extended into G. We present new cubic planar bipartite reducible configurations found with computer search. In addition, we present new infinite class of reducible configurations and prove reducibility to their respective reductors.
This is a joint work with František Kardoš.

DOCTORAL STUDENTS FROM COMENIUS UNIVERSITY RECEIVE RESEARCH GRANTS

Bratislava, 3 April, 2023: Comenius University Bratislava has been supporting research work of...

In 2023, 415 doctoral students applied grants, most of them from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics and the Faculty of Medicine, like in previous years.
Jana Urbánková from the Faculty of Pharmacy will study the knowledge and attitudes of Slovak adolescents about medicines, their risks and their safe and correct use. She wants to find out where they source information about medicines and whether they consult their parents or experts about their use. She will verify whether a brief, interactive explanation by a pharmacist influences the subject’s attitude. Her intention is to design a school lesson for adolescents based on the research.
Daniel Kyselica from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics wants to research the motion of objects in space, especially space debris from satellites or asteroids. He plans to employ machine learning to extract information about the properties of the objects and their rotation from the light curves including the light intensity of the objects. This information can be used to predict their future behaviour and facilitate removal.
Pavel Danihel from the Faculty of Management will study both the negative and positive impacts of the pandemic and of the energy crisis on small and medium-sized enterprises. The driving force of the economy, small and medium-sized enterprises are threatened by such unpredictable phenomena. „The research will also research the use of traditional and less traditional forms of state aid, including the Recovery and Resilience Facility, to restore financing of the enterprises,“ says the PhD student.
Monika Šmeringaiová from the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences will investigate whether and how state family policy affects child births. In her research she will compare OECD countries and focus on the family policy in Slovakia and Czechia. „I study the agenda of government cabinets, which address family policy in different ways,“ explains Monika.
In his project, Richard Hlušek from the Faculty of Natural Sciences aims to establish the number of bus and rail connections among all municipalities in Slovakia. Based on this data, he will map country-wide public transport availability	. The output of his research will include a model for residents that calculates how long it will take them to get to their destination from, for example, their place of residence.
„Every year, the university allocates approximately a quarter million euros to support the science and research of our youngest scientists - doctoral students. I hope that the grants will make them happier and will encourage them to continue their scientific endeavours. Science is fascinating and I hope many of them will decide to continue doing research after their study, expanding he ranks of passionate researchers,“ says the rector of CU, Marek Števček.

Synopsis: In this session we will discuss opportunities for citizens to actively engage with EU politics that are essential for improving democratic legitimacy, equity and sustainability in decision making at the EU level. After providing a brief overview of the existing participatory instruments, including European elections, the European Citizens Initiative, public consultations by the EC, petitions to the European Parliament or the European Ombudsman and other, often ad hoc, mechanisms, we will take a closer look at some less well-known transnational participatory and deliberative mechanisms that the "Conference on the Future of Europe" (2021/2) has recently experimented with. This session invites discussion on the viability of thinking of the EU as a participatory democratic system and the EU institutions as fostering this approach.
