We reject corruption, we are a fair university

The University will continue to promote a zero tolerance approach to corruption.

In April 2023, investigators of the Slovak National Criminal Agency (NAKA) detained an employee of one of our faculties who was accepting a bribe. Our response was quick and decisive: we immediately said goodbye to our former colleague. The University will continue to promote a zero tolerance approach to corruption.
Corruption is not just an attempt to alter the decision of a person with authority using an envelope stuffed with banknotes. Corruption also means any abuse of power, violation of one's duties or the use of one’s authority in exchange for an undue advantage. It can be material (money, gift baskets, bottles of alcoholic beverages, household products) or non-material (various counter-services, like window washing). Sometimes the crime of corruption is committed by asking or offering a bribe.
Finally, we want to relegate the last remnants of such behaviour to the past. However, in order to succeed, we all need to chip in.

What to do if you encounter corruption?

Has someone asked you for a bribe?

Contact the police directly, they will advise you on how to proceed. The university will cooperate and will do everything to help investigate the criminal activity. Therefore, also contact the university's designated person (see below). Naturally, we will protect any whistleblowers.

Do you have suspicions of corruption?

Sometimes one has suspicions, but no certainty. For such cases, we have designated a person who can advise you on how to proceed. They will guide you through the world of regulations – while protecting you as a whistleblower. Find more details in our Internal Regulation no. 26/2022 (link via QR code on the right).

Who is the designated person at Comenius University?

The person designated to receive reports of anti-social activity is the head of the Internal Audit Unit at the Rectorate, Ing. Peter Rusňák, PhD. Any reports sent to the address
will reach him directly.

The International Conference "Šubjak's Day" Celebrated Its 25th Anniversary

University Hospital Martin became a hub of international dialogue and scholarly exchange on April...

The event was presided over by the Dean of Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Andrea Čalkovská, DrSc., and the Director of Martin University Hospital, MUDr. Ivan Kocan, PhD. The conference was inaugurated by Associate Prof. Maria Janíčková, PhD., MPH, head of the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Martin.
The annual conference, held in honor of Associate Prof. Jan Šubjak, was a vibrant mix of enlightening lectures, rigorous debates, and memorable moments.
A significant highlight of the event was the recognition of MUDr. Dagmar Statelová, CSc., the Vice Dean for Educational Activities in the field of Dental Medicine. In acknowledgment of her contribution to the growth of the Slovak Medical Society, she was bestowed with a gold medal.
The professional gathering provided not only experienced practitioners but also dental students with a unique opportunity to interact and engage with top experts in the field. This allowed a shared platform for discussing new trends and challenges in oral and maxillofacial surgery, fostering an environment of learning and collaboration.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Bharat Ratra (22.5.2023)

Tuesday 22.5.2023 at 14:00, Lecture room F2 130

Bharat Ratra (Kansas State University):
The "Standard" Model of Cosmology ...and Open Questions
Abstract:
Experiments and observations over the last two decades have provided strong support for a "standard" model of cosmology that describes the evolution of the universe from an early epoch of inflation to the complex hierarchy of structure seen today. I review the basic physics, astronomy, and history of ideas, on which this model is based. I describe the data which persuade cosmologists that (as yet not directly detected) dark energy and dark matter are by far the main components of the energy budget of the universe. I conclude with a list of open cosmological questions.

Icelandic Delegation Visits Jessenius Faculty of Medicine

On Tuesday, May 9th, a delegation from the Icelandic town of Akureyri visited the Jessenius Faculty...

The delegation, which included Runólfur Oddsson, the Honorary Consul of the Slovak Republic in Iceland, and Hulda Hermannsdóttir, Assistant to the Mayor of Akureyri, was welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Andrea Čalkovská, DrSc., and Deputy Dean Martin Janík, PhD. The atmosphere of the meeting was described as both pleasant and informal, reflecting the shared educational goals and growing partnership between the two nations.
Interestingly, the small Icelandic town of Akureyri has become a source of students for the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, with several students traveling from Iceland's northern region to study medicine in Martin. Among the delegation was Jón Már Héðinsson, a former Director of a high school in Akureyri, and his wife Rósa Sigursveinsdóttir. They were particularly delighted to find four of their former students now immersed in medical studies at the University.
Earlier in May, representatives from the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, including the Deputy Dean for Foreign Relations, Martin Janík, and Prof. Erika Halašová, PhD., had embarked on a reciprocal visit to Akureyri. Their visit included a rich program of activities, including promoting their faculty to local Icelandic high schools.
Importantly, the meeting in Martin was attended by former students of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, who are now practicing medicine in Iceland. This presented a unique opportunity for potential students to gain first-hand accounts of the advantages and experiences of studying medicine in Slovakia.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Nina Hronkovičová (11.5.2023)

Thursday 11.5.2023 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Nina Hronkovičová:
On Siamese color graphs of small order

Abstract:
A generalized quadrangle of order $q$ is an incidence structure such that on every line there are exactly $q+1$ points, at every point there intersect exactly $q+1$ lines, and no two distinct points lay on the two distinct lines. A spread in a generalized quadrangle is a set of lines which partition the point set. Generalized quadrangles play important role in various parts of mathematics, for example, their incidence graphs are Moore graphs of girth $8$. In 2003 Kharabani and Thorabi showed that for any prime power $q$ there exists a system of $q+1$ generalized quadrangles of order $q$ on the same set of points sharing a common spread such each pair of points lies on a line in at least one of the generalized quadrangles. They called such system a geometric Siamase color graph of order $q$. Klin, Reichard and Woldar showed that lines of generalized quadrangles in a geometric Siamese color graph of order $q$ form a Steiner system with parameters $(2,q+1,q^3+q^2+q+1)$ and they used this observation to classify geometric Siamese color graphs of order $2$. Later they found hundreds of geometric Siamese color graph order $3$. Using algebraic properties of generalized quadrangles with a spread derived by Brouwer in $1984$ we completely classify geometric Siamese color graphs of order $2$ and $3$.

Nuclear Seminar - Jozef Mišt (10.5.2023)

Wednesday 10.5.2023 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Mgr. Jozef Mišt:
Investigation of 182Pt structure via β decay of 182Au

Abstract:
Neutron-deficient exotic isotopes in the lead region manifest various interesting phenomena of nuclear structure and radioactive decay, such as shape coexistence, isomeric states and β-delayed fission. A great tool to study these isotopes is the spectroscopy of γ rays following their β decay which allows us to identify and study levels in the daughter nucleus up to relatively high excitation energy. One of the isotopes in this region is 182Au together with its daughter nucleus after beta decay, 182Pt. These isotopes were studied at the ISOLDE facility at CERN during the IS665 experiment. During the seminar, the preliminary results of the analysis of data from this experiment will be presented. The level scheme of 182Pt was built on the basis of prompt γ-γ coincidences, which was extended up to the excitation energy of 3.7 MeV with many new transitions and levels. Additionally, log ft values of this beta decay were evaluated for the first time, which allows us to get information about spins and parities of populated states.

For the first time, the elections were held according to the recent amendment of the Higher Education Act, which mandates that the candidate for dean is elected by the electoral assembly. The assembly consists of representatives of the academic community and one quarter of its members are appointed by the Rector.
The electoral assembly of FPES elected Professor Viktor Bielik as candidate for dean by 13 votes out of 17. The runner-up was Professor Marián Vanderka who served as the dean until 31 January 2023. Since that date, Viktor Bielik was appointed as acting dean in the interim period until regular elections.
Associate Professor Lucia Mokrá was elected as the candidate for the dean of FSES by 13 votes out of 14 and she was the only nominee. She also acted as dean in the period leading to the regular election. Her four-year term of office begins on 14 May 2023.
