Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Sergei B. Popov (13.6.2023)

Tuesday 13.6.2023 at 14:00, Lecture room M VI

Sergei B. Popov (ICTP, Trieste, Italy):
Evolution of magnetic field of neutron stars
Abstract:
In the talk, I briefly discuss the present-day view on the magnetic field evolution of neutron stars and their main observational appearance. Then, I focus on the possibility of finding magnetars in binary systems of different kinds. Possible candidates include accreting neutron stars (in particular, ultra-luminous X-ray sources), gamma-ray sources, and fast radio bursts. I present a scenario in which the existence of a highly magnetized neutron star in a high-mass X-ray binary is possible at the age of a few million years.

New study on disease defense within ant colonies

A cross-disciplinary study on cooperative disease defense in ants has been published in the...

A
has uncovered crucial findings about the collective disease defense within ant colonies. The work explores the influence of individual decisions and information processing on preventing disease spread. Led by experimental biologist Sylvia Cremer from ISTA, the experimentalists observed groups of infected and uninfected ants, and discovered a preference for grooming individuals with a higher pathogen load. Theoretical analysis conducted by Gašper Tkačik (physics, ISTA) and Katarína Boďová (mathematics, FMFI UK) revealed that ants also respond to social feedback regarding their own infectiousness. Together, these factors contribute to a robust mechanism of disease control. The study provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of disease prevention within ant colonies. For more information, please refer to the
.

University to Delight Lovers of Classical Music

Bratislava, 6 June 2023: A new concert grand piano of the renowned manufacturer Fazioli found its...

The Fazioli F308 concert grand piano acquired by Moyzes Hall is the top model of the Fazioli range of concert grands. It is three meters long and has immense power and extraordinary harmonic richness. Its placement in the historic Moyzes Hall represents a marriage that already entices musicians, ensembles, promoters and organizers of music festivals from near and far.
"The Faculty of Arts of Comenius University has long been striving to return Moyzes Hall to the map of prestigious cultural venues in Bratislava and Central Europe. For reason we acquired a unique Fazioli concert grand piano, which was delivered to Moyzes Hall this April," said the dean of the Faculty of Arts, Marián Zouhar. The faculty will use the revenues from its commercial activities to pay for the piano. The same type of grand piano was also loaned to the La Scala opera house in Milan.
The new acquisition comes from the workshops of the legendary manufacturer Fazioli which successfully competes with the producers of the best and most expensive concert pianos. The company was founded in 1981 by engineer a musician Paolo Fazioli and his pianos quickly created a class of their own. Their success rests on uncompromised quality, perfectionism, first-rate materials and a rejection of the concept of industrial production.
The marriage of the piano to the Moyzes Hall at Vajanského nábrežie 12 in Bratislava is not accidental. The Hall is a unique cultural venue steeped in history. Symphonic concerts were held here since the 1920’s. After World War II, concert series of the Slovak Philharmonic orchestra and the Bratislava Music Festival took place there. After 1989, the Hall was returned to Comenius University. The tradition of regular concerts, however, was discontinued in the 1990’s because the Hall lost its concert piano, which had to be returned to the Slovak Philharmonic.
The unique instrument will be commissioned in Moyzes Hall at a celebratory concert on Wednesday, 7 June 2023, during a performance of the Kharkiv National Academic Opera and Ballet of M. V. Lysenko, with pianist Eva Varhaníková. Luca Fazioli, the son of the brand's founder and the company's sales director, promised to appear at the event. The concert takes place in cooperation with the Mypiano company, which is the exclusive representative of Fazioli in Slovakia. The event is for invitees only.

We Preserve our Position in THE Impact Rankings

Bratislava, 5 June 2023: Comenius University Bratislava was ranked in the 601st-800th place band of...

The assessment is divided into
, including, among others, gender equality, affordable and clean energy or climate action. Institutions are included in the ranking if they complete at least four of the 17 indicators. This year's edition evaluates 1591 universities from 112 countries and regions of the world.
"Comenius University Bratislava was ranked 601st-800th, same as last year, consolidating its position among higher education institutions in the expanding ranking," says CU Rector Marek Števček. In addition to placing 77th overall in peace, justice and strong institutions, the university was ranked 201st-300th in good health and wellbeing, 601st-800th in the quality of education and 801st-1000th in partnerships for the goals.
Participating universities can choose the indicators in which they want to be evaluated and ‘partnerships for achieving goals’ is the only mandatory indicator. Indicators are grouped into three categories – policies adopted by the institution, activities contributing to the fulfilment of the goals and indicators of progress towards goals.
The ranking evaluated six universities from Slovakia. In addition to CU they include PJ Šafárik University in Košice (801st – 1000th band), University of Economics in Bratislava (1001+), Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (1001+), Technical University in Košice (1001+) and Žilina University (1001+). Comenius University is seventh best in the V4 group of countries in 'good health and wellbeing', behind Charles University of Prague and ahead of Masaryk University of Brno and Palacký University of Olomouc. In the 'peace, justice and strong institutions' indicator, CU is second among the universities of the V4 countries, just behind Charles University of Prague.
***
Comenius University is the only Slovak university which regularly appears in all prominent rankings. According to The Center for World University Rankings, it is 661st in the world. It reached the 651st-700th place band in QS World University Rankings. In the Round University Ranking, it ranked 426th overall and 178th in the education category. In ARWU ranking (Shanghai ranking) it placed in the 701st-800th place band. The prestigious Best Global Universities ranking ranks it 639th overall, and 266th in physics. The SCImago ranking lists it in 573rd place. In the NTU Ranking (National Taiwan University Rankings) it is ranked 701st-750th overall and 301st-350th in physics, worldwide. In the ranking of The Three University Missions, MosIUR is on 284th place. THE WUR ranking puts Comenius University in the 1001st - 1200th place band overall. World University Ranking RankPro placed it in 222nd place in Europe.

According to the head of the clinic, MUDr. Peter Žiak, PhD., thanks to the increasingly used technologies in ophthalmology, Slovak and Czech doctors could watch the surgical procedures online just as the operator sees them through the microscope.
"The imaging technology used allows for high-resolution transmission. The image quality is therefore high and ranks among the best images from an operating microscope," explained MUDr. Peter Žiak, PhD.
