SUCCESSFUL 9TH YEAR OF THE CONFERENCE "BLF 2023"

9TH YEAR OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE " BRATISLAVA LEGAL FORUM 2023" WAS HELD ON 11. - 12....

SUCCESSFUL 9TH YEAR OF THE CONFERENCE "BRATISLAVA LEGAL FORUM 2023"
9TH YEAR OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE " BRATISLAVA LEGAL FORUM 2023" WAS HELD ON 11. - 12. SEPTEMBER 2023 IN THE PREMISES OF THE COMENIUS UNIVERSITY IN BRATISLAVA, FACULTY OF LAW UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE ALUMNI CLUB OF THE FACULTY OF LAW CU. THE PLENARY SESSION WAS HELD IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CENTRAL THEME OF THE CONFERENCE "MAN AT THE CENTRE OF THE RULE OF LAW".

The ninth international conference of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava (FLAW CU) created a space for domestic and foreign participants to present their scientific contributions in 12 parallel sections. The conference created a unique opportunity for judges, lawyers, academics and representatives of public administration to pool opinions, experiences, ideas, share the latest knowledge and provide a platform for discussion on current issues in the field of law.
The plenary session with the central theme "The man at the centre of the rule of law" constituted an important part of the conference. In his opening speech, the Rector of Comenius University in Bratislava, prof. JUDr. Marek Števček, DrSc. emphasized the importance of social sciences, which are able to reflect the full spectrum of changes in society that we are currently facing. In connection with this, he expressed an appeal to the social responsibility of lawyers, how our society will develop in the future. The floor then went to Assoc. JUDr. Eduard Burda, PhD., Dean of the Faculty of Law of CU, who highlighted the fundamental and significant importance of the topic of the man at the centre of the rule of law and what should be the approach of the law to this issue like. "Our society is standing at a fundamental crossroads, where we are deciding what will happen to men if one day algorithms are able to simulate our everyday activities", Dean commented on the topics of the upcoming two panel discussions. Finally, JUDr. Mikuláš Trstenský, CSc., a member of the Executive Board of the Alumni Club, addressed the audience and highlighted the importance of the club's activities both for the management of the faculty and for the alumni of the Faculty of Law of CU, whose active cooperation with the club includes their participation in legal conferences.
The plenary session provided expert discussion in two thematic pillars - "Artificial Intelligence as a Challenge for Law, Legal Education and the Rule of Law", where four speakers took the floor, namely prof. Ing. Ivan Kotuliak, PhD., Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies of STU in Bratislava, prof. Ing. Igor Farkaš, Ph.D. from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University in Bratislava, Mgr. Silvia Belovičová, LL.M. - attorney at law and JUDr. Tomáš Jucha, MSc,. from AmCham Slovakia. The discussion outlined a view of artificial intelligence, which represents one of the biggest challenges for society, and this phenomenon does not bypass the law, for which brings a number of challenges. The key issue is a balanced regulation that seeks to avoid unwanted risks while not reducing the innovation potential of the industry.
In the second pillar, the invited experts presented the topic "Criminal Law and the Rule of Law", namely Assoc. JUDr. Eduard Burda, PhD., Dean of the Faculty of Law of CU, JUDr. Petr Angyalossy, PhD., President of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic, JUDr. Jozef Kandera from the General Prosecutor's Office of the Slovak Republic and JUDr. Martin Puchalla, PhD., President of the Slovak Bar Association. The second thematic pillar sought answers to the questions: What are the problems of the rule of law in the field of criminal law? Is the principle of legality respected in all circumstances? What are the future challenges for the Slovak and Czech Republic in the field of criminal law? Both topics were also discussed with questions from the participants of the plenary session.

At the end of the first day of the conference, the participants attended a gala reception in the historic building of Moyzes Hall on Vajanského nábrežie, which was accompanied by the music of the Dominanta Orchestra, the orchestra of the Faculty of Law CU.
The conference continued in a friendly and scholarly spirit on Tuesday, 12 September 2023. The conference has not only resulted in the scientific papers presented by the individual participants, but also in the making of new connections with experts from both academia and practice. Subsequently, FLAW CU will publish a peer-reviewed conference proceedings as an output of the conference.
The conference welcomed a total of almost 350 participants over the two days, including online registrants. Many renowned experts such as Professor Paul du Plessis from the University of Edinburgh, who is an expert in the field of Roman law, Radim Dvořák, Deputy Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia, JUDr. Peter Angyalossy, PhD, President of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic, spoke at the conference. The event was organized by the Centre for Practical Education of Lawyers, o. z., together with FLAW CU, and the Alumni Club of FLAW CU, which provided its auspices to the event.

The organisers of the conference would like to thank their sponsors for their financial, professional and media support, which made this important event possible: two exclusive partners - Slovnaft, a. s., and the law firm G. Lehnert, s. r. o., Wolters Kluwer SR, s. r. o, the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic, the Supreme Administrative Court of the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia, the Council for Media Services, the Slovak Inspectorate of the Environment, the National Labour Inspectorate, Hospodárske noviny, the Agency for Research and Development Support and the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

Prestigious grant HORIZON EUROPE for BEATsep

consortium to research the long-term consequences of sepsis

The International consortium BEATsep, of which MF UC is a member, has been awarded a prestigious grant from the European Union's HORIZON EUROPE program valued at 6.9 million euros for sepsis research, with up to 700,000 euros designated for scientists and physicians from our faculty! In our part of the project, authored by Michal Pastorek from the Institute of Molecular Biomedicine, we will, along with colleagues Prof. Ľudmila Podracka and Assoc. Prof. Július Hodosy from the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Emergency Medicine at MF UC investigate the immune and neurological changes that arise as a result of this severe condition.
Despite the best efforts of modern medicine, sepsis remains a life-threatening condition and a leading cause of death among critically ill patients, with a global mortality rate reaching 20%. Survivors of sepsis often grapple with multiple health issues and an increased risk of further complications due to their compromised immune system. The BEATsep research consortium is dedicated to gaining a deeper understanding of the factors affecting the quality of life for sepsis survivors. We are delighted to announce the funding of our research project titled, 'Biomarkers established to stratify sepsis long-term adverse effects to improve patients' health and quality of life,' with a grant of approximately €6.9 million over the next five years to address this challenge. Based at the Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia our team will investigate alterations in the blood microenvironment and molecular mechanisms responsible for aberrant immune responses and neurological impairments in sepsis survivors. We will also actively engage in patient enrollment.
Scientists from the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Ireland, Austria and Slovakia have joined to study the long-term immunological impact of septic shock as members of this consortium led by the Cellular and Molecular Immunoregulation (CMI) research team at the International Clinical Research Centre (ICRC) based in the Czech Republic. “The project has the chance to understand better and fundamentally change the recovery of pediatric and adult patients who have suffered septic shock,” says Dr. Jan Frič, head of the CMI team at ICRC. The ICRC is a joint facility of St. Anne's University Hospital in Brno and the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University. The consortium’s project is to receive approximately €6.9 million in European Union funding over the next five years, roughly €700,000 of which will flow to scientists and clinicians at the Institute of Molecular Biomedicine, Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia.
As a prospective observational study, BEATsep will benefit from the recruitment of two different cohorts with sepsis - pediatric as well as adult, and Slovakia will participate in not just their enrollment but also in research of the consequences of this severe condition. “We hypothesize that the post-sepsis alterations in immune homeostasis may be linked to a particular immune defense mechanism – extracellular traps formed during septic shock. Their remnants lingering in the body may engage our immune cells and potentially contribute to post-sepsis neurological impairments,” explains Michal Pastorek from the Institute of Molecular Biomedicine.
The project is an example of an innovative and successful combination of translational and clinical research, the know-how of several international scientists, and the collaboration between hospitals, universities and other scientific institutions. In addition to the Institute of Molecular Biomedicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University the following institutions are involved in the project led by the International Clinical Research Center (ICRC), based in the Czech Republic: Masaryk University Brno and the National Institute of Health (Czech Republic), Institute for Innate Immunity of the University Hospital Bonn and the ImmunoSensation Cluster of Excellence of the University of Bonn (Germany), Ludwig Boltzman Institute (Austria), Centre d’Immunologie de Marseille-Luminy and Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Marseille (France), National University of Ireland and the Lung Biology Cluster (Ireland) and BioVariance GmbH in Tirschenreuth (Bavaria).

FERTILE: Artful Educational Robotics to promote Computational Thinking in a Blended Learning context

The FERTILE project aims to support educators in designing for blended learning by integrating ER...

Main investigating organization: University of West Attica, Greece
Cooperating organizations:
Comenius University Bratislava, Slovakia
Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic
Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain
Universidad de Valladolid, Spain
Principal Investigator from FMPI CU: doc. RNDr. Zuzana Kubincová, PhD.
Investigators from FMPI CU: Mgr. Karolína Miková, PhD., Mgr. Lucia Budinská, PhD., Mgr. Jakub Krcho
Project funding: KA220-HED-Cooperation partnerships in higher education, Erasmus+ Programme
Grant agreement number: 2021-1-EL01-KA220-HED-000023361
Project duration Grant: 2021-2025
Project web-page:

The integration of Educational Robotics (ER) in the educational practice is associated with the development of digital skills and Computational Thinking (CT), positively affecting students’ personal development. As ER has been deeply connected with classroom-based learning and face-to-face (f2f) interaction, the Covid-19 pandemic imposing online learning has abruptly discontinued robotics’ implementation in all educational levels from elementary to secondary education and universities. Although several initiatives on developing ER simulators appeared, which have recently been also released as a cost-effective solution in case robotic technologies are not available, their exploitation remains sparse. Moreover, no methodologies exist to support educators in designing and implementing blended or online robotics learning designs. So, in the post-pandemic era, it seems to open up opportunities for a digital transformation, exploring the potential of integrating ER in a meaningful blended learning context.
The FERTILE project aims to support educators in designing for blended learning by integrating ER simulators and remote collaboration into the educational practice. It intends to stimulate innovative learning and teaching practices by promoting contemporary pedagogies that embrace cross-disciplinary learning by integrating ER with Arts towards cultivating Computational Thinking (CT) skills in a blended learning context. To this end, the main innovation of this approach lies in the way Arts are involved as a discipline with a great deal of CT e.g. creating art involves problem solving, representation of expression patterns (i.e. Chekhov pauses, storytelling techniques, animated characters), algorithm development (i.e. directing a choreography), grasp the main idea of a literary text (summary or interpretation). Robotics, physical or online, can be considered as a functional part of such processes; students create robots to represent behaviors, scenes, motifs of poems, or to describe a story in creative and out-of-the-box ways.
The explicit target group of the project is educators following a mixed-status approach involving academic tutors, pre-service teachers and in-service teachers. To address the needs of educators teaching or using ER in elementary, secondary or higher education, the FERTILE project will:

Design, implement and evaluate the FERTILE methodology. A methodology for designing blended learning contexts that holistically cultivate CT skills by integrating f2f Artful ER activities focusing on artefacts construction with online activities. On line activities will be implemented through a community platform enabling remote collaboration for planning, reflection on the artefacts, programming and co-design through ER simulators.

Organise and implement training events for educators focusing on developing appropriate skills for implementing the FERTILE methodology in various educational contexts.

Establish a community of digitally competent educators able to design, co-design and share blended Artful ER projects through a community platform.

Provide open educational resources such as online training material for educators along with exemplar projects that will be available after the project completion.
