The ENLIGHT alliance has been operational for three years

On Wednesday, 27 September 2023, the annual meeting of the ENLIGHT European superuniversity project...

At the meeting, CU Rector Marek Števček and vice-rector for international relations Jozef Tancer evaluated the achievements of the ENLIGHT European university project, reviewed its past challenges and looked into its future.
The aim of the European university project is to expand study opportunities, share know-how, foster networking, internationalise and connect research, science and education. The covid pandemic started in the same year that ENLIGHT was launched, putting a brake on student mobility which is one of the main advantages of the superuniversity. When pandemic restrictions were relaxed, the number of students who took the opportunity to travel via ENLIGHT almost doubled, when comparing current year data with past years. People with disabilities also received an alternative way of learning abroad through online mobility. So far, 39 educational activities have been developed, including summer and winter schools, BIP (hybrid courses) and living labs with external partners, such as the Bratislava municipality or ESET. New teaching methods are being implemented, e.g. challenge-based teaching in which students themselves choose the challenge they want to work on.
The project also includes a Student Network that has been building links among student senates of the participating universities over three years now. Students can participate in the meetings of the alliance and develop a truly international student community across ten prestigious European universities. „We are involved in making important decisions and are no longer left on the sidelines,“ concludes Student Network member Damián Samuel Ovečka, a student of the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University.
,,We are pleased that Comenius University is a member of an elite club of ten European universities, enabling us to participate in higher education transformation,“ said the head of CU’s ENLIGHT Office Viktor Svetský at the meeting.
The ENLIGHT Alliance offers numerous opportunities to connect for students, teachers, academics and researchers through joint courses, short-term and semester-long mobilities, trainings and various conferences focused on five areas: health and well-being, digital revolution and impacts of digitization, climate action, energy transition and circular economy, and equity. In its current form it connects ten European universities: University of Ghent in Belgium, University of Bordeaux in France, University of the Basque Country in Spain, University of Galway in Ireland, University of Göttingen in Germany, University of Groningen in the Netherlands, University of Tartu in Estonia, University of Uppsala in Sweden and as of this year, the Swiss University of Bern.

CU awards an honorary doctorate to legal scholar Pavel Šámal

Bratislava, 28 September 2023: Today, Comenius University Bratislava awarded the honorary title of...

Pavel Šámal is a professor of criminal law at Charles University in Prague, and a judge of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic in Brno. In the past, he held the position of judge and later president of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic. In Slovakia, he significantly contributed to the drafting of criminal law legislation.
"The work of Pavel Šámal has had a deep impact on criminal law policy in both the Czech Republic and in Slovakia. I am convinced that his influence is deeply felt by the majority of criminal lawyers in Slovakia and will manifest itself through them in the necessary criminal law reforms in the coming decades," said Eduard Burda, dean of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University at the award ceremony.
The accreditation of the Criminal Law study programme was made possible because of Professor Šámal's involvement with the Faculty of Law which has lasted many years. The collaboration resulted in the personal and scientific development of both the faculty of the department, and generations of criminal lawyers. His publishing activity contributed to the development of restorative justice and more frequent use of alternative punishments.
"The law must not be rigid. The requirement for the stability of law does not mean that laws and other legal regulations are immutable, but that laws shall not be changed randomly and on a personal whim - they shall only be changed when such change is required by a necessary, scientifically established objective social need," noted Professor Šámal in his speech.
His intensive body of research work includes over 250 original articles and papers in the field of criminal law and more than 770 citations. His publication activity won him a number of awards.

Andrej Baláž:
Pangenomic data structures

Abstract:
Recent advancements in sequencing technologies brought a steep decrease in the acquisition price of biological sequences and a rapid increase in the growth of the size of novel genomic datasets. This growth and the shifting paradigm of jointly analyzing all the related sequences, also called pangenomics, demand new data structures and algorithms for efficient processing. We will present several data structures that form the building blocks of fundamental bioinformatics algorithms, such as read alignment. Due to the immense sizes of the pangenomic datasets, these algorithms often have to work in compressed space while remaining time-efficient to be practical. Therefore, we will show several techniques to achieve this efficiency and highlight our contributions to the field of pangenomic data structures.

Seminar of Theoretical Computer Science - Alexandru Popa (29.9.2023)

prof. Alexandru Popa (Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Bucharest):
Timeline Cover in Temporal Graphs: Exact and Approximation Algorithms
Abstract:
In this talk we present a variant of vertex cover on temporal graphs that has been recently introduced for timeline activities summarization in social networks. The problem has been proved to be NP-hard, even in restricted cases. We present algorithmic contributions for the problem. First, we present an approximation algorithm of factor $O(T \log{n})$, on a temporal graph of $T$ timestamps and $n$ vertices. Then, we consider the restriction where at most one temporal edge is defined in each timestamp. For this restriction, which has been recently shown to be NP-hard, we present a $4(T-1)$ approximation algorithm and a parameterized algorithm when the parameter is the cost (called span) of the solution.

Students of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Informatics at Comenius University in...

Shortly before the beginning of the winter semester, on the 14th and 15th of September 2023, the 13th Czech-Slovak Student Scientific Conference in the field of physics was held at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University. The event featured presentations of nearly 50 works covering various fields of physics. Students from seven Slovak and Czech faculties presented the results of theirs scientific activities in five sections: Theoretical Physics, Biophysics and Physics of Molecular Systems; Particle and Nuclear Physics; Condensed Matter Physics; Physics of the Earth and the Universe; General Physics, and Didactics of Physics. The contributions to the competition were nominated by the faculties based on faculty rounds of the Student`s Scientific Conference or other recommendations from individual departments. In addition to the academic part, where students shared their knowledge, experience, and the results of their scientific work, the conference also comprised a competitive section, and expert juries in all sections were given a challenging task of selecting the best works. Twenty students from our faculty - nominated by the faculty's committees - travelled to Prague in April 2023. The following were among the top three works in Prague:

Lívia Sobinovská – Educational game "Physics Brainbox," section General Physics and Didactics of Physics – 1st place, supervised by PaedDr. Tünde Kozánek Kiss, PhD. a doc. PaedDr. Viera Haverlíková, PhD.,

Benedek Bukor – Second-order kinetic term effective actions for matrix model description of fuzzy field theories, section Theoretical Physics, Biophysics, and Physics of Molecular Systems – 2nd place, supervised by Mgr. Juraj Tekel, PhD.,

Marek Gocník – Influence of spatial heterogeneity on the mechanical properties of supergrids and multilayer coatings, section Condensed Matter Physics – 2nd place, supervised by doc. Ing. Marián Mikula, PhD.,

Veronika Benková - The role of magnetic nanoparticles in chemotherapy and tumor hyperthermia, section Theoretical Physics, Biophysics, and Physics of Molecular Systems – 3rd place, supervised by prof. RNDr. Melánia Babincová, DrSc.,

Mária Paprskárová – Fragmentation of fireballs, section Physics of the Earth and the Universe – 3rd place, supervised by doc. RNDr. Juraj Tóth, PhD..

This year, the national round of Falling Walls Lab, a competition of innovative ideas, was won by...

Kristína Macáková, a PhD student at the Faculty of Medicine, is researching the use of erythrocytes to combat infections. "This disease affects one percent of all people. Most, however, think that it only affects the elderly and post-menopausal women, but rheumatoid arthritis can occur in young people or even children. The problem is that we don't know why occurs. In our research we go after the origins of rheumatoid arthritis. If we can discover them we hope to improve the treatment which, at the moment, only focuses on symptoms," explains Kristína Macáková.
Jaroslav Valovčan, a student of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, whose research focuses on modelling seismic waves, finished second. His goal is to develop a model of automation that would provide accurate calculations. In his research he already proved that the simulated wave field should have an exact height of one wave number, while the corresponding district model must be accurate up to a double of this number.
Peter Anthony, also a student of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, finished third. In his research, he created a classifier for detecting malware using a knowledge database.
A jury of experts consisting of scientists from various disciplines reviewed all entries and chose the winners. Falling Walls Lab Slovakia is part of a worldwide format that gives recognition to exceptional projects of young innovators from various disciplines of science.
The winner of Falling Walls Lab Slovakia 2023 will represent Slovakia in the international finale of the "Emerging Talents" category among 100 participants from around the world before a jury composed of renowned scientists, innovators and representatives of businesses. The winner will participate in the global finale of the Falling Walls Conference in Berlin, where they will be able to meet the movers and shakers of world-class research.
The Slovak finale was organised by Comenius University Bratislava in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
