Abstract:
Continuous modern Hopfield networks are a model of associative memory with large storage capacity. They can be used both as a component in deep learning architectures and as a standalone component for pattern completion and denoisifying. Our work is aimed at improving the training method of these methods by using competition to achieve distributed representations of training patterns and their effective storage in meta-stable states.

CU representatives met their colleagues from the Ghent University in Belgium, the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the University of Göttingen in Germany. They spoke to members of management, deans and ENLIGHT coordinators to find ways of developing cooperation in the areas of research and teaching. Our faculties and our organisation of study were presented to our partners and talks focussed on possible joint master and doctoral programmes, exchange study stays and research projects, as well as research cooperation.
"In Göttingen we visited the teaching and simulation hospital of the University Medical Centre Göttingen, with whom we would like to collaborate on new methods of medical training as part of the ENLIGHT consortium. We outlined areas of research where it might be possible to form joint doctoral study programmes," Vice-dean of CU’s Faculty of Medicine Daniela Ostatníková clarifies which activities her faculty plans to develop in the next period of inter-university cooperation.
Vice-rector of the university Jozef Tancer was accompanied during the official visits by Vice-dean Daniela Ostatníková, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy Ján Klimas, Vice-dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences Mariana Kováčová, Vice-dean of the Faculty of Management Lucia Vilčeková and Vice-dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics Róbert Jajcay. At partner universities the delegation of Comenius University was shown specialised research centres, campuses of faculties and one of the most renowned and venerable university campuses in the Netherlands, the Zernike campus in Groningen.
"As a member of ENLIGHT, we are developing the first grant call for teaching and research cooperation projects, to be announced in the spring of 2024. I believe that visits of partner universities like this one will contribute towards building contacts and forming work teams that will use the upcoming grant scheme," said Vice-rector Tancer.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Martin Bachratý (13.10.2023)

Friday 13.10.2022 at 13:00, Lecture room M/VIII (online too)

Martin Bachratý (Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava):
What are skew morphisms and how to find them?
Abstract:
A skew morphism of a finite group G is a specific permutation of G, the definition of which closely resembles that of a group automorphism. Skew morphisms were first introduced in the paper by Robert Jajcay and Jozef Širáň in 2002, where it was shown that they are closely related to an important class of highly symmetric three-dimensional objects. In the first part of this talk, we will illustrate this relationship using practical examples. In the second part, we will discuss skew morphisms of finite cyclic groups. Specifically, we will explain why it is hard to find all skew morphisms of a given cyclic group and how we can combine theoretical observations and computational methods to tackle this problem.
We will also list some closed mathematical problems that we managed to solve using data acquired from our computations.

Challenges and Visions of Legal Education

To commemorate International Teachers' Day, a conference titled "Challenges and Visions of Legal...

Over 100 participants engaged in discussions about legal education, pedagogical methodology, how to build a sense of justice in students, and whether they are adequately prepared for the high level of responsibility that the legal profession holds in society. The conference also featured workshops focused on interactive and innovative teaching methods.
The aim of the conference was to deepen collaboration between higher legal education and the subsequent training for specific legal professions. Therefore, it was significant that attorneys, judges, prosecutors, notaries, bailiffs, mediators, and members of the Judicial Academy were represented in the conference. Among the participants were also lawyers working in the non-profit sector and critical human rights organizations, including the Slovak National Centre for Human Rights, the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Slovakia, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. In addition to representatives from the Faculty of Law at Comenius University (FL CU), experts from law faculties in Trnava, Banská Bystrica, Košice, Olomouc, and Prague also attended.
The opening panel, focused on effectively bridging theory and legal practice, featured Eduard Burda, the Dean of FL UC, Juraj Vačok, a judge of the Supreme Administrative Court of Slovakia, Linda Wáclavová, a prosecutor of the General Prosecutor's Office of Slovakia, Peter Stodola, a member of the presidium of the Slovak Chamber of Bailiffs, Matej Marhavý from the Slovak Bar Association, Marek Ivančo from the Judicial Academy, and Viktor Hatina from Charles University in Prague. During the panel, participants discussed whether it is necessary to introduce mandatory internships for law students and how practical experience during studies can influence their future careers.
The space was also dedicated to a stimulating discussion about what we do not teach at law schools but should. Contributing to the discourse were Matej Kačaljak and Ján Mazúr from FL CU, Zuzana Šimeková from the Dentons law firm, and Maxim Tomoszek from Palacký University in Olomouc. The speakers ventured into topics concerning the significance of lectures in today's society, the ability of lawyers to work with data, the importance of caring for lawyers' mental health, and whether we are truly imparting the competencies expected by employers to our students.
The conference concluded with a panel discussion on the social responsibility of lawyers, their impact on society, and the provision of Pro Bono legal services. Andrea Moravčíková, the Vice-President of the Supreme Court of Slovakia, Eva Braxatorisová, the Director of the Pro Bono Lawyers Program at the Pontis Foundation, and Martin Krivák, a lawyer whose law firm received the Law Firm of the Year award in the Pro Bono category for four consecutive years, took the floor. The discussion focused not only on the need for Pro Bono services but also on ensuring that the work is carried out thoroughly, honestly, and responsibly.
The idea to organize a conference dedicated to legal education was initiated by Mária Havelková, who works at the Institute of Clinical Legal Education. She is dedicated to innovative and practical teaching methods, and her research focuses on legal aid, the accessibility of legal services, and finding ways to motivate lawyers to provide their services Pro Bono. The conference's outcome will be published in a monograph dedicated to lawyers' social responsibility, authored by a collective led by Mária Havelková.

Special App Assists Lung Surgery Patients with Preoperative Preparation

Patients at the Thoracic Surgery Clinic of the University Hospital Martin and JFMED use a special...

These exercises aim to assist patients in better handling the challenges of surgery, accelerate post-operative recovery, and reduce post-operative complications. The advantages of such pre-operative preparations also include shorter hospital stays, benefiting both the patient and the hospital.
Medical experts from the Thoracic Surgery in conjunction with seasoned physiotherapists designed the respiratory exercises in this free application, ensuring the rehabilitation program's high expertise.
The head of the Thoracic Surgery Clinic, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anton Dzian, PhD., noted the similarities between the demands of surgery and athletic endeavors. "Just as an athlete must train intensively and over long periods before a physical performance, we want our patients to be equally prepared for complex surgeries," said Dr. Dzian. As per the program, patients begin their exercises as soon as they schedule their hospital stay.
The mobile and web-based platform's design allows patients to practice at home, ideally starting at least two weeks before the surgery. They also continue these respiratory rehabilitation exercises after the operation.
Besides preparing patients for surgery, the method of proper respiratory exercises also aids other lung ailments. "We aimed to create a comprehensive lung rehabilitation exercise program," explained Abdulla Al Hakim, the co-author of the app and the Chief Physician of physiatry, balneology, and medical rehabilitation at Rajecké Teplice Spa.
Furthermore, each patient will undergo individual instruction with a physiotherapist before practicing exercises independently at home. The physiotherapist and creator of the BodyFix.io app, Patrik Konrády, advised patients to gradually ease into the regimen. "Each body responds differently to the exercise plan. The app can be downloaded by anyone and is free of charge," added Konrády.
Milan Krajčovič, a patient who used the app, shared his positive experience. "It assisted me during various critical situations post-surgery. Knowing the right exercises to do can make a difference during challenging moments. Recovery is never easy, but this process certainly helps," said Krajčovič.
The Thoracic Surgery Clinic has incorporated these pre-operative and post-operative respiratory exercises as a part of the ERAS protocol implementation, aiming to significantly reduce recovery time for surgical patients.
