Second Successful Year for DOPAMINE Floorball Tournament

From the get-go, the tournament was marked by high energy and thrilling gameplay. After 18 intense matches, team "Medíci" emerged victorious, clinching the top spot. The battle for second place was equally gripping, with Martin's own "Pifkári" securing the silver. "TJ Dynamo máš v gačoch" claimed the bronze, adding to the excitement of the competition. The event was more than just matches. A vibrant array of side activities, including a raffle and an award for the best player of the tournament, added to the festive atmosphere. Enthusiastic fans contributed to making the DOPAMINE tournament a genuine sporting experience, full of camaraderie and spirited competition. The organizers expressed their gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this year's event. "We believe that not only the players but also all the fans who came to support their favorites enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere and the quality of the game. We are already looking forward to next year's edition," they expressed.

omenius University recognises outstanding students and teachers to honour the International Students’ Day

The academic commendation is awarded by the Rector of the University to those students who achieve excellent academic results, exhibit exemplary student and civic involvement, or represent the university. This year the distinction was awarded to twenty-nine students. Bruno Almásy who studies general medicine is one of them. He received the commendation for saving a human life by providing timely and correct first aid. Another student of medicine, Adam Rajčáni, demonstrated extraordinary dedication as a member of a testing team during the COVID-19 pandemic. Maxim Duleba, a PhD researcher in literary science received the award for his excellent study results. In the course of his study he published twenty research papers, half of which are listed in the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases. He is also active as a representative of students in the ENLIGHT alliance of European universities. Another recipient, Lucia Keszeghová, studies subnuclear physics and contributed significantly to analyses carried out as part of the ATLAS experiment. Her presentation of the research results at a conference in Michigan attracted an extraordinary response. Several students received the commendation for representing the university in sports. They also include this year's world champion in footgolf and a student of coaching and physical education teaching Lucia Čermáková or biker Kristina Madarásová – European champion and silver and bronze medallist at the World Championships. Twenty-seven teachers also received a Letter of Gratitude of the Rector of CU for their contribution to the success of their students in science, arts and professions. They include nephrologist Ľudmila Podracká, neurosurgeon Juraj Šteňo, pharmacologist Anna Paul Hrabovská, physicist Stanislav Tokár, psychologist Andrea Madarasová Gecková and others. "We convene on this day to remember November ‘89 as a symbol, or code, which launched history in a certain direction, and at the same time we honour those who, through their work, contribute to the incorporation of this code in the genetic makeup of our society. Through your work, attitudes and example, you are the much-needed essence of hope for a decent kind of freedom. I am sincerely grateful to you for trying to improve the world around you," said Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University in his address to the awardees. We would wish to inform you that on Tuesday on 21 November 2023 (between 14:00 – 15:30 room D4 within the course International Organisations at the Faculty of Management Comenius University we will welcome a guest speaker – Mr. Peter Sedláček – the Department of EU Member States, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic. The title of the lecture is The Role of International Organisations in Practice of the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy.

The event will take place primarily in the German language. Questions asked in other languages during the discussion are welcome.

Gaudeamus 2023

Throughout the two-day fair, representatives from the Jessenius Faculty were on hand to answer a myriad of questions. Inquiries ranged from details about the admissions process, various study programs, to insights about life as a student in Martin. Questions regarding accommodation and leisure activities in the city were also addressed, providing a holistic view of student life. In addition to the informational campaign, the faculty was involved in promoting science through the accompanying "Science for Life" event. Here, students were introduced to the integral role of scientific research in medicine. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in hands-on laboratory work, which included using pipettes and microscopes. A significant highlight was the scientific discussion focused on the detection of pathogens in wastewater. Moreover, visitors could examine microscopic preparations of various hematological diseases, enriching their understanding of this medical field. The high turnout and positive feedback at the faculty's booth reflected the significant impact such events have on guiding the future paths of high school graduates. The enthusiasm and interest shown by attendees underscore the importance of these interactions in shaping the decisions of future university students. Representing the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Gaudeamus 2023 were RNDr. Marek Samec, PhD., Rebeka Rovňaníková, and Iryna Zavhorodnia.

Efficient fine-tuning of Bert models in Slovak language
Abstract:
The popularity of creating large language models has been incredibly rising. Most modern LLMs offer great accuracy in many different text-based tasks but are limited by a huge number of data required to not only pre-train but also fine-tune these models. This problem only deepens in models trained on data from low and mid-resource languages, such as Slovak. In our work, we examine the fine-tuning process of two such models and try to enhance it by connecting to Epinet network to create Epistemic neural network, a relatively new concept that helps the model to detect its own uncertainty to make better decisions in the long run. In the presentation, we will show not only results based on the classic fine-tuning of such novel network but also try to use methods of Active learning to lower the data requirements while retaining similar results.

International scientific project - final report

In the period from May 20, 2022 to October 20, 2023, our department participated in the international scientific project "Algorithms used in the field of criminal sciences ", which was supported by the Visegrad fund no. 22210121, under the leadership of associate professor István Ambrus from the Hungarian university Eötvös Loránd University, within which associate professor JUDr. Radovan Blažek, PhD. and his Czech, Polish and Hungarian colleagues participated in a two-week research stay in Great Britain in February 6-19, 2023, where they investigated how artificial intelligence and algorithms can be used in criminal law. As part of this scientific stay, they held consultations with many theoreticians and practical experts in the field, while visiting famous universities such as the University of Oxford, the University of Surrey and the University of Birmingham. During the stay, consultations were also held with lawyers and representatives of West-Midlands Police, Coventry. The result of the ongoing project was that on June 2, 2023, an international conference organized as part of the project took place at Eötvös Loránd University, which, in addition to several domestic and foreign guests, was attended by Criminal law department of Faculty of Law, Comenius University - assoc. prof. JUDr. Radovan Blažek, PhD. and doctoral students Mgr. Lucia Vasilik and Mgr. Lenka Miklóssyová. The result of the conference will be a peer-reviewed collection published by the well-known foreign publishing house Routledge in English. As an output of the project, the publication of 5 scientific studies in international journals is also expected, which will present the results of the project and try to arouse the interest of experts in this field. The result of the project for the next period is also the continuation of cooperation with foreign experts, of which it is possible to mention, for example, prof. Melissa Hamilton, an expert in criminal law and algorithms, who is one of the best-known Anglo-Saxon experts in this field, lecturing at the University of Surrey. Other experts are Prof. John Child – University of Birmingham; Prof. Rebecca Williams – University of Oxford; Prof. Alex Sarch – University of Surrey; Paul Jarvis, Advocate). It can be highlighted and appreciated that the Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics had the opportunity to participate in such an interesting project.
