CU signs a memorandum with UNICEF

On 1 December 2023, Comenius University signed a memorandum of understanding with UNICEF. It forms...

In the memorandum, CU expresses its commitment to cooperate with UNICEF in providing assistance to refugees from Ukraine. As part of this commitment, language courses will be available to Ukrainian health workers, social workers in detention centres will be offered training, and children and families affected by the war in Ukraine will receive assistance.
UNICEF and Comenius University will work together in a partnership to develop the capacity of students and professionals to address the needs of children and refugees. The assistance will focus on child protection, education, health care, mental health care, mental and social support and social protection. The university also committed to cooperate with UNICEF on the training of workers in facilities for refugees. Additionally, CU will do its utmost to offer language courses to Ukrainian health professionals, teachers, and instructors, while involving its students in these activities. Other initiatives include workshops for students on how to communicate sensitively with children from war-affected areas.
"I am convinced that the memorandum is a reflection of our growing and developing partnership. Our colleagues responsible for child protection have been in close contact from the very start. Then the people working in health care realised we really needed to cooperate with your experts from CU’s Faculty of Medicine to attract Ukrainian paediatricians and help them with the recognition of their credentials. The memorandum is a sign that this cooperation has room to grow. Comenius University has become our important partner," said Michaela Bauer, coordinator of Slovakia’s UNICEF Emergency Response Office.
"I am very pleased that our cooperation has been beneficial to both sides and that a memorandum was signed that is of great importance to the whole university. I am grateful for the support and I'm happy that UNICEF staff were willing to help interlink practical experience with research, and involve our students in the process. This project will enable our students to gain valuable experience," said Katarína Žilková, dean of the Faculty of Education of Comenius University.

Revolutionary "Parkinson & Well" Treatment Program Unveiled by Jessenius Faculty of Medicine

In a significant advancement for Parkinson's disease treatment, the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine...

This program integrates various modules including balneotherapy, physiotherapy, sensory, and nutraceutical elements, each reflecting the latest research in Parkinson's disease.
Assoc. Prof. Martin Kolísek, Dr.rer.nat., a scientist from the Martin Biomedical Center at JFMED, announced the program, emphasizing its holistic approach. "This unique treatment program combines several therapeutic strategies, each carefully tailored to the needs of Parkinson's patients," he said.
The spa treatment, a crucial component of the program, has shown significant benefits in improving the motor and performance abilities of Parkinson's patients. Unlike traditional treatments, this specialized spa therapy offers a more holistic, customized approach and is monitored in neurological clinics.
One of the program's primary goals, as outlined by Assoc. Prof. Kolísek, was not only to create a globally unique treatment program but also to make it fully accessible and covered by health insurance companies. "Currently, Parkinson's patients in Slovakia, numbering over 20,000, are only entitled to partial insurance coverage. We aim to change that," he stressed.
Slovak Health Spa Piešťany, collaborating with experts from JFMED, offers this innovative treatment. "Since the spring of this year, we have been conducting clinical trials. The study results were presented at the World Parkinson Congress in Barcelona," added Assoc. Prof. Kolísek.
The team behind the rehabilitation program received international recognition with a special jury prize from the European Spa Association, accepted by Dr. Alena Korenčíková and the Medical Director of the Slovak Health Spas, MUDr. Boris Bánovský, at a congress in Karlovy Vary. Dr. Korenčíková, a doctoral student under Assoc. Prof. Kolísek, has been deeply involved in Parkinson's disease research.
The program's authors include balneology and spa medicine experts Dr. Alena Korenčíková, Dr. Boris Bánovský, Bc. Ivona Hrdinová; specialists from Slovak Health Spa Piešťany; and Parkinson's disease experts Dr. Milan Grofik, PhD., and Assoc. Prof. Martin Kolísek, Dr.rer.nat. from JFMED.
Parkinson's disease is a progressive chronic neurological disorder, primarily affecting motor functions due to the degeneration of brain cells. It commonly manifests in individuals over 50, with more women affected than men in Slovakia, unlike in other countries.

Abstract:
An amount of proton-proton collisions produced at Large Hadron Collider LHC alow us to study top-quark production and propersties with high precision. By using events with top quark, we are able to analyze rare processes and search for a new physics beyond the Standard model. In this contribution, the latest results from the top-quark physics published by the ATLAS collaboration, based mainly on Run-2 data, are presented. The plans for Run-3 analyses are also included.

Robotic surgery for young patients at the University Hospital Martin

In a groundbreaking procedure, University Hospital Martin's Centre for Robotic Surgery successfully...

Prior to this, the Da Vinci system, celebrated for its precision and minimally invasive technique, was primarily utilized for adult patients at University Hospital Martin. The shift to include pediatric surgeries marks a significant development. "The patient's condition necessitated a complex surgical procedure, ideally suited for robotic assistance. The system offers enhanced visibility in hard-to-reach areas and ensures safer operations," said Assoc. Prof. Dalibor Murgaš, PhD., MHA, Deputy for Surgical Disciplines at University Hospital Martin.
The patient, Laura Tökölyová, faced a high risk of colorectal cancer due to her condition. "The surgery involved removing the entire colon and rectum and creating a reservoir from the small intestine. A major advantage of robotic surgery is significantly quicker patient recovery," noted Dr. Marek Adámik, PhD., a robotic surgery expert at the hospital.
Tökölyová's feedback underscores the benefits of this advanced surgical approach. "When I learned my surgery would be done using a robot, I was relieved because I knew recovery would be faster. I'm profoundly thankful to the entire team at University Hospital Martin and Dr. Adámik," she said.
With over 100 robotic surgeries already performed on adults, University Hospital Martin's Da Vinci system is used in surgeries, gynecology, and urology. "We aim to expand its application to more departments, particularly for pediatric patients in fields like pediatric surgery and urology," Assoc. Prof. Murgaš added.
University Hospital Martin is committed to broadening the scope of robotic surgeries in response to the high demand for such procedures, given their benefits.

Doctoral colloquium - Štefan Pócoš (4.12.2023)

Monday 4.12.2023 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Štefan Pócoš:
RecViT: Enhancing Vision Transformer with Top-Down Information Flow
Abstract:
We propose and analyse a novel neural network architecture — recurrent vision transformer (RecViT). Building upon the popular vision transformer (ViT), we add a biologically inspired top-down connection, letting the network ‘reconsider’ its initial prediction. Moreover, using a recurrent connection creates space for feeding multiple similar, yet slightly modified or augmented inputs into the network, in a single forward pass. As it has been shown that a top-down connection can increase accuracy in case of convolutional networks, we analyse our architecture, combined with multiple training strategies, in the adversarial examples (AEs) scenario. Our results show that some versions of RecViT may indeed be more robust than the baseline ViT. We also leverage the fact that transformer networks have certain level of inherent explainability. By visualising attention maps of various input images, we gain some insight into the inner workings of our network.

Slovak Pediatric Conference Marks 80 Years of Children's Department in Martin

The 53rd annual Galand's Days, a nationwide pediatric conference, took place on November 23 and 24...

"This year's conference covered various pediatric specialties like immunology, gastroenterology, neurology, nephrology, and pulmonology, among others. We also delved into vital topics like vaccination and pediatric screening," informed Prof. Peter Bánovčin, CSc., President of the event and Head of the Children and Adolescents Clinic at University Hospital Martin.
A significant highlight of the congress was commemorating the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the children's department in Martin. "The department was founded during a tumultuous period for Slovakia, marked by war and uprising. Initially set up in the premises of the 5th pavilion, which now houses the Clinic of Infectology, the department's first head unfortunately fell victim to a bomb explosion. Post-war, under the leadership of Professor Vladimír Galanda, a prominent figure in Slovak pediatrics, the department saw significant growth," Prof. Bánovčin elaborated.
The 53rd Galand's Days also featured several commemorative memorial lectures. A special focus was given to pediatric nursing, addressing the acute shortage of nurses in Slovak healthcare. "We aim to motivate nurses to engage and develop in their profession," added Prof. Bánovčin.
The event's opening ceremony included the presentation of awards by the Slovak Pediatric Society. Among the recipients was Assoc. Prof. Dalibor Murgaš, PhD, MHA from University Hospital Martin, the Ministry of Health's chief expert in pediatric surgery in Slovakia.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Pavol Kollár (1.12.2023)

Friday 1.12.2023 at 13:00, Lecture room M/VIII (online too)

Pavol Kollar:
How to count big number of objects exactly
Abstract:
Cayley graphs are an important and extensively studied class of vertex-transitive graphs, but many of the vertex-transitive graphs are not Cayley. Ginette Gauyacq in her paper "On quasi-Cayley graphs" introduced a similar structure, the quasi-Cayley graph. One way in which to represent these is via Latin Squares or, as we call them, regular families of permutations. Later this structure was generalised to so-called "r-regular families" and our research is aimed at generation and enumeration of these with the help of a computer, gaining further insights into these unexplored structures.
