Jessenius Faculty of Medicine Showcases at Sweden's Largest Student Fair

Representatives from the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Martin made a...

The faculty's delegation included Dean Andrea Čalkovská, Associate Dean for International Relations and Education in English, Martin Janík, and Janka Sýkorová from the Foreign Relations Office. Their discussions focused on experiences, future plans, and potential collaborations.
A student representative informed Swedish students about the benefits of studying medicine in Martin and the opportunities the city offers to international students. The Slovak Embassy in Sweden highlighted the participation of JFMED and other Slovak faculties at the fair through its Facebook page. The embassy praised the quality of education these institutions provide and noted the significant number of successful doctors working in Sweden who graduated from these schools.
"The faculty educates students from Slovakia and around the world. At the fair, they explained to numerous high school students the conditions and advantages of studying, as well as opportunities for accommodation, transportation, student activities, and the culture and nature that Martin and its surroundings offer. They answered many questions that students naturally have before deciding to pursue challenging medical studies, especially far from home. We are confident that Sweden will soon discover the quality of higher education offered from Slovakia and appreciate the international experience gained. And also the hospitality and beauty of Slovakia and its people, and the friendships formed!" read a statement from the embassy.

Nuclear Seminar - Adam Sitarčík (13.12.2023)

Wednesday 13.12.2023 at 14:00, Lecrure room F1/364

Mgr. Adam Sitarčík:
Production of neutron-deficient astatine and radon isotopes in complete-fusion reactions

Abstract:
Complete-fusion reactions are one of a few possibilities to synthesise short-lived neutron-deficient nuclei. However, the production and study of the new exotic isotopes keeps getting more and more experimentally challenging. The precise theoretical calculations of the expected reaction yields are therefore critical for the success of future measurements. Fission-barrier height is one of the important parameters entering the theoretical calculations. By confrontation of the calculated excitation functions with experimental data we derived a fission-barrier scaling systematics for astatine and radon compound nuclei, similar to the one previously established in bismuth and polonium nuclei. Interestingly, the very neutron-deficient isotopes required a significantly larger reduction of the fission barrier than the trend predicted. Could this be the hint of quasi-fission hindering the creation of the nuclei? The newly-obtained data and results for very neutron-deficient astatine isotopes will be presented as well.

Doctoral colloquium - Lukáš Radoský (11.12.2023)

Monday 11.12.2023 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Lukáš Radoský:
Optimization and Reuse in Development of Large Software Systems
Abstract:
Introduction of Unified Modelling Language (UML) codified a universal format for software modelling. UML offers numerous diagram types for visualization of various aspects of the modelled software. While the vast range of diagram types makes UML robust, it also implies that to model software thoroughly, several diagrams need to be created. To understand the modelled software, one needs to look into several diagrams and deduce the links between them. This is why researchers, us included, try to propose modelling approaches that would make such links explicit. We propose a novel software modelling method that provides both the structure and the behavior of the modelled system in one view, with the model being executable. To simplify the process of projecting software models into implementation, the software prototype supporting our modelling method also features automated transformation of platform-independent software models into platform-dependent source code. Validity of software modelling methods and supporting prototypes is usually validated by performing user evaluation, which is a step yet to be taken.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Martin Krššák (12.12.2023)

Tuesday 12.12.2023 at 14:00, Lecture rook F2/125

Martin Krššák:
Bulk gravitational action and teleparallel geometry
Abstract:
The action is a crucially important concept in physics, used to derive field equations and serving as the starting point for quantization. In general relativity, the original action introduced by Hilbert yields field equations but overlooks surface terms necessary for a consistent variational principle. In the 1970s, Gibbons and Hawking demonstrated that the Hilbert action needs to be supplemented with a surface term that plays a crucial role in path integral quantization and derivation of black hole entropy. I will briefly introduce these results, incorporating newer motivation from the holographic principle and the study of the black hole information paradox. Subsequently, I will demonstrate how this problem can be approached using the so-called bulk actions, also known as Einstein or Moller actions. While these actions do avoid some problems of Gibbons and Hawking, they are not covariant. I will then argue that these actions can be naturally cast into a covariant form using another of Einstein's inventions known as teleparallel geometry.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Babak Ghanbari (7.12.2023)

Thursday 7.12.2023 at 9:50 hod., Lecture room C

Babak Ghanbari (Charles University, Prague):
Approximate cycle double cover
Abstract:
The cycle double cover conjecture states that for every bridgeless graph G, there exists a family F of cycles such that each edge of the graph is contained in exactly two members of F. Given an embedding of a graph G, an edge e is called a bad edge if it is visited twice by the boundary of one face. CDC conjecture is equivalent to bridgeless cubic graphs having an embedding with no bad edge. In this talk, we introduce non-trivial upper bounds on the minimum number of bad edges in an embedding of a cubic graph.
