A research team from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University discovers a new species of prehistoric gecko

Knowledge of the evolution of animals on our continent has been expanded. An international team...

"Our research focused on the fossil remains of a gecko from the Lower Eocene in France. It is 50 million years old and comes from a period popularly known as the Early Tertiary. This gecko represents a hitherto unknown new genus," said Andrej Čerňanský from the Department of Ecology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University, the team member from Slovakia. The researchers named the new species Bauersaurus, in honour of the U.S. herpetologist Aaron Bauer.
The global climate at the time Bauersaurus lived was very warm, the warmest in the last 200 million years. On most continents, the forests were similar to those of South America. There was no ice at the poles, and ocean levels were higher. At that time, Europe was an archipelago and many areas were flooded by sea.
Bauersaurus was not like any of today’s geckos or other known geckos from the Tertiary. On the contrary, its morphology strongly resembles the Jurassic gecko from the Solnhofen area in Germany, where the well-known Archaeopteryx and other pterosaurs were found.
"It has many primitive features that are not found in today's representatives of these reptiles. We were surprised to find some signs in a younger gecko from the Eocene, although these two geckos are separated by more than 100 million years and especially by the well-known mass extinction at the end of the Mesozoic. It was during this extinction event that non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs and ammonites became extinct. The event also had a pronounced negative impact on scaly reptiles, i.e. lizards, such as geckos. The find from France suggests that one archaic line of geckos survived this extinction event and co-existed in Europe with more modern geckos 50 million years ago," Andrej Čerňanský explains why the discovery is unique.
It makes the evolution of these iconic lizards, which can run on walls and even glass, much more interesting than previously thought.

Erasmus call for student mobility is OPEN

Erasmus call for student mobility for the academic year 2024/25 is OPEN

Dear students,

Erasmus call for student mobility (study = SMS action) for the academic year 2024/25 IS OPEN
In mid of January 2024, we will make an online information session on the ongoing call at FM = call details for the session will be distributed up-to-date.
From 15.12. to 15.02.2024 we will open the call for applications for Erasmus+ student mobility for the purpose of study (SMS action, semester stays) for the academic year 2024/2025.
Students apply in Mobility Online System, the link to the application form is
where students will also find instructions on how to apply. Login passwords as to AIS.
Valid and active contracts for FM are on our website:

In the application form, students can choose a maximum of 3 options = 3 partner universities, including ENLIGHT universities on the basis of a multilateral agreement concluded at the level of the whole university. The ENLIGHT agreement is for all fields of study (with some exceptions listed on the website), but this does not mean that all fields of study are taught at the university. Students must therefore check the study options and compatibility with their degree programme in advance on the partner university's website or in katalógu predmetov ENLIGHT. The number of places on ENLIGHT contracts is valid for the whole university and varies widely (from 4 to 30 students per partner), so it cannot be divided by faculty at the beginning of the selection process. We will assess the number of places according to interest once applications close, together for the whole university, and will notify you of the names of students who can benefit from a multilateral contract. We will assess the student's benefits, language skills, whether it is a first Erasmus mobility and any health or social disadvantages based on the information provided in the application form. Information about ENLIGHT mobilities under this call (number of places and nomination deadlines, links to partner universities...) can be found on the website (ENLIGHT mobility tab):

Cutting edge research in ceramics

Ceramic engineering is a multibillion-dollar industry. Its applications span from glass-ceramic...

Originally from Iran, he studied at the University of Tabiz, ranked among the 5 best comprehensive universities in Iran. After receiving his Master’s degree in Materials Engineering, he spent seven years working as an engineer at a glass production factory and vacuum furnace manufacturing company.
Research calling
In the meantime, he was also interested in tourism, so he obtained a tourist guide license. In addition to his main job, he worked as a tour guide and organized day-long or two-day trips on the weekends for tourists. After meeting his wife, they started a business and established their own travel agency, NashaPersia, for those interested in the nature and culture of Iran.
During the Coronavirus crisis, Naser Hosseini had received an offer from a Professor from a research center in Iran to collaborate on his research. „I was so excited to work in research again. My help to that research group worked and we were able to publish the results in a quality journal. That period of my life was fantastic. I realized how much I have missed research,“ he says.
The path after that was clear. He decided to pursue his PhD. Eventually, he received a PhD grant at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Recently, Naser Hosseini received two more grants for his research, one of them from the European Ceramic Society as part of his PhD thesis in Genoa, Italy.
Extreme materials
As he was always interested in ceramic materials and even his Master thesis was oriented at high temperature ceramic coatings, Naser Hosseini decided to dedicate his research to it.
Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are materials that melt at temperatures higher than 3000°C. They can easily tolerate extreme environments at temperatures higher than 2000°C for an extended length of time. 3000°C is an extreme temperature when most materials known to man have already melted or decomposed.
„Only about 15 elements or compounds can withstand temperatures higher than 3000°C,“ says Naser Hosseini. These materials are the source of research for extreme environment engineering. Apart from their ability to resist ultra-high temperatures, they possess excellent mechanical properties. These qualities make them perfect candidates for hypersonic vehicles and the aerospace industry.
During the last century, aerospace science has been on the rise. „I love traveling and discovering the world. Working on this kind of material is also contributing to discovering the world, space, and new planets,“ says Naser.
Future for space exploration
In his PhD thesis, Naser Hosseini is working on developing new ultra-high temperature ceramic materials under his mentor, Dr. Peter Tatarko. These particular materials are also known as high entropy ceramics which are a very new field and the edge of knowledge. „One limitation of advanced ceramic materials is fabricating them at a large scale and a complex shape,“ says Naser.
This can be solved by sintering of small size and simple shape and later joining them into large and complex shapes of ceramic materials. Development of a new technique for joining these novel ceramic materials to themselves is also a part of his thesis. This new knowledge will open new possibilities, for instance, in hypersonic vehicles.

Nursing Students Spearhead Nationwide Educational Initiatives

Second-year nursing students from the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University have...

Focusing on crucial health topics, these initiatives were conducted in primary and secondary schools, covering first aid, proper nutrition to prevent obesity, the balance of physical activity and rest, correct posture, dental hygiene, breast cancer prevention, contraception, unintended pregnancy, and the adverse effects of addictive substances. Students practiced these skills using models from the Institute of Nursing and the Center for Medical Education Support at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine.
The educational project reached several kindergartens and elementary schools. When working with seniors, the focus was on respiratory gymnastics, physical activity, senior nutrition, and preventing complications in diabetics.
Supervised by Mgr. Radka Kurucová, PhD., responsible for the course, these educational initiatives were carefully curated in both content and form.
This experience has led some students to further engage with selected institutions, participating in volunteer activities. This ongoing involvement enhances their knowledge and skills in implementing educational interventions and programs, particularly those of a preventive nature.
The positive feedback from the management of these institutions, children, students, seniors, and the educator-students themselves, has reinforced the decision to continue such activities as part of the educational process in this subject.

Innovative Cross-Pair Kidney Transplant Performed at University Hospital Martin

University Hospital Martin has achieved a medical milestone with its first cross-pair non-relative...

In one case, a sister wanted to donate a kidney to her sibling, and in the other, a wife was the intended donor. "However, upon examination, we found that the donors were immunologically incompatible with their recipients. Fortunately, within our transplantation center, we were able to pair these two groups in a cross-transplantation, where the immunology was much more favorable," explained Prof. Ivana Dedinská, PhD., head of the Transplantation Center at UHM.
This event marks a first in the 20-year history of the Transplantation Center at UHM. The preparatory work for the transplant took a full year, with immunologist Mgr. Andrej Čereš emphasizing the importance of monitoring antibodies that could cause the transplanted organ to fail. "In collaboration with German colleagues, we used an algorithm with artificial intelligence, enabling us to cross-exchange these two pairs. It was exceptional that both donors and recipients greatly benefited from this exchange," he elaborated.
The operation's management was also a challenge, being simultaneously conducted in two adjacent operating theaters. "We had to plan something unique to Martin, with two operating tables and teams ready – surgeons, instrument nurses, and support staff. Both surgeries had to start simultaneously to prevent any change of mind by the donors, which is a standard procedure," explained Assoc. Prof. Juraj Miklušica, PhD., head of the Clinic of General, Visceral, and Transplant Surgery at JFMED and UHM. Six surgeons were involved, with a seventh on standby.
The psychological aspect was equally demanding. "It's usual for a surgeon to operate on a sick person, but living donors are healthy individuals. We’re removing a healthy organ, which significantly increases our responsibility," Miklušica added.
This case is a beacon of hope for other kidney failure patients, highlighting the importance of contacting a transplantation center, even if a living donor is not immediately compatible. "Whenever such pairs occur, we try to combine them somehow, and this case showed that it is possible. The more pairs in the existing registry, the greater the chance of finding a potential exchange," concluded Prof. Dedinská.
Currently, 286 patients are waiting for kidney transplants in Slovakia, with 60 at the Martin Transplantation Center.
