Comenius University Bratislava adopted a directive that specifies the rules for the use of...

The university supports the use of various tools by both students and teachers, but is aware that transparent rules are needed, particularly with regard to the citation of sources. AI tools should primarily be used to help students learn and to effectively develop and apply the knowledge, abilities and skills acquired by them. It is recommended that teachers familiarize themselves with AI systems and use these tools to enhance the teaching process.
The directive responds to the impact of AI on the academic environment and formulates principles of creative, safe, responsible, ethical and transparent use of these tools at the University. AI tools are intended for use in the drafting and processing of texts, but the rules can also be appropriately applied to other forms of generative AI. The recommended ways of citing AI tool use are listed in the annex to this directive.
Comenius University respects academic integrity, transparency and fairness. The development and use of AI tools is seen as an incentive that could trigger important changes in education - provided that this phenomenon can be adequately mastered and that we can adapt to the new situation.

Doctoral colloquium - Peter Anthony (26.2.2024)

Monday 26.2.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Peter Anthony:
Tailoring Logic Explained Network for a Robust Explainable Malware Detection
Abstract:
The field of malware research faces persistent challenges in adopting machine learning solutions due to issues of low generalization and a lack of explainability. While deep learning, particularly artificial neural networks, has shown promise in addressing the generalization problem, their inherent black-box nature poses challenges in providing explicit explanations for predictions. On the other hand, interpretable machine learning models, such as linear regression and decision trees, prioritize transparency but often sacrifice performance. In this work, to address the imperative needs of robustness and explainability in cybersecurity, we propose the application of a recently proposed interpretable-by-design neural network - Logic Explain Network (LEN) to the complex landscape of malware detection. We investigated the effectiveness of LEN in discriminating malware and providing meaningful explanations and evaluate the quality of the explanations over increasing feature size based on fidelity and other standard metrics. Additionally we introduce an improvement on the simplification approach for the global explanation. Our analysis were carried out using static malware features provided by the EMBER dataset. The experimental results shows LEN’s discriminating performance is competitive with Blackbox deep learning models. LEN's Explanations demonstrated high fidelity, indicating genuine reflections of the model's inner workings. However, a notable trade-off between explanation fidelity and compactness is identified.

SUMMER SEMESTER AT COMENIUS UNIVERSITY STARTS TODAY

Due to recent events, an independent security audit is ongoing at the University, focusing initially on the buildings of the Rectorate, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts at Šafárikovo námestie in Bratislava. The audit is carried out by security expert Martin Královič and crisis manager Braňo Tichý. Preliminary consultations resulted in recommendations such as the installation of an early warning audio system or a training for teachers and staff in current emergency procedures in the university’s premises. It was also proposed to create an instructional video on proper crisis response. The audit also indicates that communication with the various elements of the integrated rescue system needs to improve. In the coming days, the management of the university and of the faculties will study the outcomes of the audit and subsequently the university will conduct a similar analysis of its other premises, including dormitories.
"The tragic events in Prague and the recent evacuation of our building at Odbojárov street showed that we need to take security at universities very seriously." said Comenius University Rector Marek Števček. "We want our students and staff to feel safe and at the same time to be prepared to handle crisis situations. We need to improve security procedures, but also to address the root cause of such events and strive to mainstream the topic of mental health among the academic community." added the Rector.
At the beginning of this year, the university expanded the capacity of its
, which has been available since 1968 and provides free psychological and consultation services to both students and staff. This semester, the service organizes several events, including a series of discussions on mental health at the dormitories in Mlynská dolina under the title (Ne)pokoj/Rest(less), a Buddy programme for new students, a seminar on mental health specifically aimed at students of the Faculty of Medicine, and a support group on the topics of Stress, tension, anxiety and me. Comenius University is studying other ways of increasing awareness of mental health care, e.g. through psychological training for study department staff.
