Artificial intelligence in practice

On 20 March, 2024, lectures were held at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics for international and Slovak students on artificial intelligence and its practical uses. The ‘AI for Everyone’ BIP takes place between 18 and 22 March.

Martin Hyben, a researcher from the KInIT Institute, who specialises in machine learning and artificial intelligence, and Michal Malý, co-founder and director of the artificial intelligence section at the Photoneo company, lectured students from our ENLIGHT partner universities: University of Tartu, Uppsala University, University of Göttingen, University of Groningen, Ghent University and University of Galway, as well as from Comenius University.

KInIT used LLM (Large Language Models) to create tools that might help journalists verify information. The tools consist of text detectors in multiple languages and fact-checking systems. Using these systems to fact-check information on social networks, they discovered that people share the most disinformation on Youtube channels. The authors are now working on improving this situation.

Photoneo created the BRIGHTPICK mobile robotic system, the first and only fully automated order picker for e-commerce and online food retailers, that robotically picks and consolidates orders directly in the warehouse aisles, irrespective of warehouse size. In contrast to other fulfilment robots, it does not need to travel back and forth to centralized picking stations, which means faster picking and higher throughput.

The lectures will go on until 22 March, 2024. On Monday, 18 March, students were given a lecture on the basic concepts of artificial intelligence, and the impact of artificial intelligence on sustainable development goals.

The lectures help students grasp the basic concepts of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the main concepts of artificial neural networks, probabilistic calculations and reinforcement learning, while offering an overview of problems that artificial intelligence is capable of solving, and learning about social issues related to artificial intelligence.
