Honorary doctorate for Austrian professor Helmut Kern

On 28 September 2022, Comenius University Bratislava will award the title of Doctor honoris causa to university professor Helmut Kern who was nominated for the accolade by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport. The award reflects his contribution to the development and practical application of innovative methods in the rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system, and for the cooperation with Comenius University.
Prof. Dr. med. Helmut Kern (71) was born in Austria. He studied medicine and sports science at the University of Vienna. Physical medicine and rehabilitation has long been his area of expertise in which he carries out research and develops new methods of rehabilitation. He has more than 7000 citations and an H-index of 44.
Since 2000, he has been cooperating with the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, mainly with Professor Dušan Hamar. These joint projects enabled Comenius University to develop new infrastructure and realize benefits in the research of exercise programs for the elderly.
Professor Kern discovered the potential of using diagnostic methods developed primarily for assessing the athletes’ level of conditioning, for medical rehabilitation. In rehabilitation, he applies progressive principles of sports training. The university also acknowledges his contribution to the study of mechanisms through which physical activity has beneficial effects at the molecular level, and of the mutual integration of medical rehabilitation and sports science.
The award ceremony will take place in CU’s Auditorium and interpretation will be provided from German into Slovak and into English.
