Study stay of Professor Anna Maria Maugeri at PraF Comenius University

In the week of 22–29 September 2025, Professor of Criminal Law Anna Maria Maugeri from the University of Catania undertook a study visit at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava (hereinafter “PraF UK”), primarily at the Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics (hereinafter “the Department”). Prof. Maugeri serves as a professore ordinario (full professor) of criminal law, and her scholarly work focuses on the fundamental principles of criminal law—including the principles of legality, proportionality, the prohibition of retroactivity, and ne bis in idem—as well as offences against the order in public affairs, prevention, and the use of protective measures.
During her visit, Prof. Maugeri delivered lectures to students and internal doctoral candidates at PraF UK on the topics “Criminal Law in Italy” “Current Challenges Related to the Case Law of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of Italy.” She also presented the Italian concept of combating organized crime, which has become an important basis for the Europeanization of criminal law in the area of the fight against organized crime.
While on the study visit, Prof. Maugeri held a working meeting with Prof. Čentéš, Head of the Department, in the presence of Prof. Strémy and the Department’s internal doctoral students. The meeting addressed current challenges in Italy’s criminal policy from the standpoint of legal regulation and the decision-making activity of judicial authorities. Prof. Maugeri’s lectures attracted strong interest from students and the Department’s academic staff, sparked intensive discussion, and contributed to the development of knowledge about Italian criminal law in terms of both legislation and judicial practice. They also helped establish concrete cooperation between the Department and the University of Catania.
