RECTOR OF COMUNIUS UNIVERSITY OFFICIALLY WELCOMES SPORTS EXPEDITION AFTER TRIUMPH IN BARCELONA
Comenius University in Bratislava (CU) secured the overall victory at the landmark 10th World Inter-University Championships (WIUC) in Barcelona. Competing fiercely against 100 universities from 30 countries worldwide, the CU expedition confirmed its dominance by winning multiple gold medals and clinching the overall first place in the competition. Thanks to this success, CU earned a "golden hat-trick."
Upon returning from the championship, representatives of the sports expedition prepared a surprise for Rector Marek Števček. In the CU Hall, the team was welcomed by a cheerleading squad performing a prepared routine.
In high spirits, the Rector, together with Vice-Rector for Education and Social Affairs Eva Viglašová, thanked the entire expedition and expressed their joy at the achieved results. "Thank you all for the top-notch representation of the university. You are amazing, and I support you with great sporting enthusiasm," the Rector stated. The athletes gifted him a gold medal as a thank you for the university's support during the championship.
Subsequently, representatives of the individual teams shared their impressions and experiences from the championships. An exhibition of the winning trophies was also featured in the hall.
CU's most successful teams, contributing to the overall victory in Barcelona, excelled in disciplines such as tennis, athletics, and swimming.
Athletics: Contributing to the overall success were the members of the Swedish Relay (Erika Brehuvová, Peter Mitašík, Vladimíra Trulíková, and Adrian Duchoslav) and the 800m runners Emma Paulínyová and Miroslav Borovka, who added a second gold in the 1 Mile discipline. The mixed 4x400m relay was also successful, winning a silver medal.
Tennis: Adela Gemzická secured first place in women's singles, as did the mixed duo Adela Gemzická and Artem Dzhurzda in mixed doubles. Artem Dzhurzda also added a silver medal in men's singles.
Swimming: Another gold was won by Emma Mauerbauer (50m backstroke). Swimmer Zuzana Pavlikovská added two bronze medals (50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke).
The women's teams of Comenius University dominated the team sports, winning gold medals in futsal, handball, and cheerleading. The success was further contributed to by the footballers and table tennis players, who returned from the tournament with silver medals.
Moreover, CU also won individual awards in both victorious team disciplines: Dominika Bereščáková (Faculty of Pharmacy, CU, Futsal) and Hana Karkušková (Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, CU, Handball) were named the best players of the tournament.
