Today's ceremony was extraordinary because the degree was presented to a number of notable scientists. The awardees included, among others, the Rector of Comenius University Bratislava and expert on civil law Marek Števček, the chairman of the Slovak Commission for Academic Degrees and botanist Karol Marhold, and the dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University and entomologist Peter Fedor.

The title was awarded to three researchers from Comenius University, thirteen male and two female scientists from the Slovak Academy of Sciences, two scientists from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava and to one each from the P. J. Šafárik University in Košice, the Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra and the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice. The new holders of the degree include four women.

Unlike other academic degrees, the DrSc. title is awarded by the Slovak Commission for Academic Degrees, rather than by the universities themselves. Candidates are reviewed by the scientific board of their research institution. The Doctor of Sciences academic research degree rewards excellent research qualification as demonstrated by a body of original research work which significantly contributes to knowledge in a discipline of science or furthers practical application in the society, and indicates a fully-formed scientific personality.
