Inspection Day of CU Management at Dormitory and University Kindergarten Construction Sites
Bratislava, 26 September 2025: An inspection day of Comenius University Bratislava (CU) management took place in Mlynská dolina, during which members of the leadership, led by Rector Marek Števček, reviewed progress on two key projects - the new university kindergarten in Staré Grunty and the renovation of the Ľ. Štúr Dormitory.
University Kindergarten in Mlynská dolina
The kindergarten project was launched to help parents reconcile childcare with work responsibilities. It was built on the site of a former ammunition depot, the only brick structure in the Staré Grunty complex. After extensive reconstruction, only the original frame of the building remained, and the entire structural system had to be redesigned.
The original plan called for a single classroom for 24 children, but after the project was reassessed in cooperation with university management, its capacity was doubled. Thanks to the new layout, the kindergarten will provide places for 48 children in two separate classrooms, complemented by full facilities including a kitchen, offices, and sanitary areas. The premises also feature a children’s playground of around 500 m².
The final building approval process is currently underway and should be completed in the coming weeks. The kindergarten will serve the children of CU students and staff. An additional advantage is the safe enclosed grounds with sufficient parking spaces.
Renovation of the Ľ. Štúr Dormitory
In the second part of the inspection day, CU management moved to the dormitory section of Mlynská dolina, where the modernisation of high-rise blocks A and B of the Ľudovít Štúr Dormitory is in progress.
On high-rise block A (VBA), extensive work on roof repairs and insulation has already been completed, all windows and balcony doors have been replaced, and the entire building is being insulated. New aluminium windows with sills have also been installed in the stairwells.
On high-rise block B (VBB), all utilities, sanitary facilities, heating, and windows are being replaced. CU management also visited the roof of the dormitory to examine the construction process in detail. The works also include façade insulation and roof renovation, most of which has already been completed. Further progress will also depend on favourable weather conditions.
Renovating the dormitories is one of the university’s main priorities, and intensive work is underway to provide students with new, modern accommodation as soon as possible.
Rekonštrukčný denník (Renovation Diary)
CU regularly reports on the progress of dormitory modernisation in a new section of its website, Rekonštrukčný denník (Renovation Diary). Every two weeks it offers a concise overview of completed and planned work: Rekonštrukčný denník: a new section on CU dormitory modernisation.
