RESTORATIVE JUSTICE CONFERENCE
27 June 2024, Faculty of Law, Comenius University Bratislava
On June 27, 2024, a conference called "Restorative Justice" was held at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University Bratislava, which was organized together with the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic.
Restorative justice represents an innovative approach to both offenders and victims of crime. This system, widespread in Western Europe, emphasises rehabilitation of offenders and assistance to victims rather than punishment. Restorative justice works to heal the wounds caused by crime through respectful dialogue and a humane approach.
The aim of the international conference is to identify both legislative and legal-application reserves, to name the reasons why restorative justice is not applied to the required extent in the Slovak Republic and to propose procedures how to enforce this pan-European trend in the Slovak Republic, in accordance with the case-law of the ECtHR and the CJEU, as well as international recommendations. In addition to criminal law, this issue is primarily related to criminology, penology and mediation and probation work, including the inevitable discussion on prison reform.
