Prof. RNDr. Jozef Masarik, DrSc., was born on 5 October 1959 in Jalovec. After graduating in nuclear and subnuclear physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of CU in 1983 he worked in the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University Bratislava (FMPI). In 1991 he obtained the PhD-level title of Candidate of Science in Physical Sciences. In 1996 he became an associate professor, in 1998 he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation and in 2001 he was appointed professor. He worked at universities and research centres in the U.S., in Germany and in Switzerland. In his scientific work he focuses on the simulations necessary for evaluating gamma ray measurements obtained by studying other planets. His research work also includes the development of programmes for the analysis and interpretation of data collected through the international study of the Moon, Mars, Mercury, some comets and asteroids; as well as applications of cosmic radiation in many areas of geophysical and cosmic research. He was the leader and participant in many international and domestic projects. He authored more than 200 highly cited scientific papers. Between 2003 and 2011 he served as Vice Dean for Science at FMPI and during the following eight years he was the Dean of the faculty. From 2014 he was the Chairman of the SRDA Presidium. He is Vice-Rector of CU since February 2019.
