INTRODUCING THE LOGO FOR THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF COMENIUS UNIVERSITY

In October 2016 Comenius University announced a competition open to all students of the university to design a logo for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the university, which will be commemorated in 2019. The competition, which ran from 1 October to 20 November 2016, was open to all students of the university regardless of their level or form of study: thus, students at all four levels of study and in either full-time or part-time study could enter.

The competition saw 239 students enter a total of 568 designs - many of which were in various colour schemes. An expert committee led by Comenius University Rector, Professor Karol Mičieta, evaluated over 700 individual pieces of work. The winner of the competition was Štefan Kukla, who is a student at the Faculty of Arts. “The logo places an emphasis on being easily recognizable and easily understood. The linking of traditions as well as new and modern techniques is represented by the ‘100’ in numeral form, which has been presented in a moderately futuristic manner,” Kukla said in the accompanying explanation.

The competition had a prize of 1000 euros. Every student who entered automatically received a T-shirt or polo shirt with the Comenius University logo.

The aim of the competition was to create a durable logo for the 100th anniversary of Comenius University which reflects the university as a modern and dynamic institution with the longest tradition of tertiary education in Slovakia. The logo will be used from 2017 to 2019 with the purpose of presenting this significant anniversary of the founding of Slovakia’s oldest and largest university. The winning logo was modified according to the request of the client.
